how easy do you think it would be to make charles cry? would words even work, or would you need something stronger?
men in the 1800s were hardly allowed to cry, let alone Charles, he very clearly surpresses his emotions around others, as we don't really see how emotional he can get until he's alone with Arthur. if anything, men typically turn all of their feelings into anger before anything, if they're going to be emotional, they're going to be angry.
You'd have to do a LOT to get past the point of being angry, worse than pain, worse than words. There was a scrapped scene after the bit with Charles and Micah, where Micah tells Charles to fetch him something to eat and Charles throws him. He was originally meant to hide in his tent and read, and if Arthur approached him, asking if he was alright, he'd throw his book and yell at Arthur saying he wasn't alright, before I believe leaving camp. you could maybe believe he cried to himself then but I can't imagine he'd even allow himself to, even when he's alone.
I think if there's any point he's most likely to cry is when he's burying yet another one of the gang, especially Arthur. He went up that mountain completely alone and buried Arthur's half rotting corpse, I think he probably knew the last time he saw him was in fact the last, but the closure still couldn't have been comfortable. the fact that no one buried him before he found him again, the fact that he was completely alone, and the fact that he lost the one person he ever felt comfortable enough to show even a hint of his emotions around, it had to hurt. It hurt enough for him to get into fighting. Sort of, making his pain into something, is kinda how I think of it.
There's several points in the story where people will make it obvious they do not care about Charles's wellbeing because he's physically strong, when Charles completely disappears from the gang, no one worries for him or asks about him, when Charles finally starts to open up to John and finally say "I'm worried for myself," John tells him "well I'm not, you're the strongest man I know," because that's what Charles has put out about himself. GOD DAMN IT HE NEEDS A FUCKING HUG 💔💔💔
This being said, Charles is not emotionally intelligent like people make him out to be. Completely surpressing your emotions and letting them out in an unhealthy way is so clearly not emotional intelligence, in fact I think he's the complete OPPOSITE of emotionally intelligent. He can't deal with his own emotions, he sure as hell can't deal with others, he isn't some "sage wise" guy, as I saw someone on here call him earlier. (what a weird word choice...) He reacts to things mostly in violence and anger. I don't think throwing people and shooting someone point blank and getting into fights for money instead of coping is "emotionally intelligent," he has every right to be angry, but that isn't some "wise" response to anger. but what do I know.
