The Finding Nemo movies are cute, and they might make you think a clownfish or a tang would make an adorable pet. Just know that keeping aquariums, especially saltwater which these particular fish need, is not as simple as it might seem. In the case of Tangs it’s especially not a good idea, for reasons noted above! Do your research before getting any kind of pet.

The three facts above are true to the best of my knowledge. Blue tangs (or palette surgeonfish) can live up to twenty years, and possible more in very good conditions. They grow to a foot long and need large saltwater tanks, 75 gallons or more. They are extremely difficult to breed in captivity and as far as I know no large-scale attempt has ever succeeded, so all of the ones you’ll see in shops will be wild-caught.

This stuff should be taken into consideration by anyone who thinks it would be nice to get one on a whim. This is a fish that a newbie aquarist really shouldn’t buy for their brand new uncycled 10-gallon tank. The point of this post is do research and be prepared to properly care for one if you want to get one, and don’t get one if you'd rather not support the mass-collection of wild fish.

Why do people want fish anyway? They’re boring pets…you get the same effect with a freaking aquarium screensaver and it’s hella cheaper.

Fish are actually awesome pets. They are way more interesting than a boring screensaver. They have their own behaviors and personalities if you just watch them. I’m raising an angelfish from a tiny baby and just watching him grow and change is really rewarding. There’s a lot of therapeutic zen from maintaining my tanks. A screensaver has nothing on that.

I shared this not because I want people to avoid the aquarium hobby, but to hopefully keep people from jumping in on a whim and potentially killing their fish through ignorance. Researching beforehand is key to keeping any animal!

I discovered a single cherry shrimp in my betta sorority tank! How’d she get in there??? She sure is pretty.

I set up a little 2.5 gallon planted tank from spare closet junk and plant cuttings for her so she doesn’t have to hide from bettas.

Cherry Garden begins again. Oh no. Now I need to buy a male cherry shrimp so they can have babies.

Look how Zanza’s marbled pattern has developed!

The top picture was around August/September-ish, when he was a quarter-sized baby(not counting fins).

The middle picture is from November.

The bottom is current, and he measures just over three inches nose to tail, four inches tall from fin tip to fin tip, and his body is two inches in diameter. And he’s going to get even bigger! :)

Also, I think he might actually be a girl. But unless I try to pair this fish with a mate and watch them spawn, I will probably never know for sure.  I named him after a male character, but said male character does look a tad feminine so it's fine.

I just bought a pound of Lindt milk chocolate bunnies for two dollars from a grocery store’s Easter clearance section. Lindt is very good chocolate. This is a steal!

I have about 50 little gold-clad rabbits here. What should I do with these? You know, besides eat them?
