âA girlfriend.â
âAre you volunteering then?â
âWell. Just because heâs got access to it doesnât necessarily mean heâs got it yet, surely, so you could buy him something you think heâd appreciate but wouldnât buy for himself?â
âLike what? Socks?â
âWell. Iâm getting him a guitar I know heâs been eyeing for a couple months now but hasnât bought yet. You could get him a case or another nice amp to go along with it. You can never go wrong with instruments for him.â
âFirst off, my present has to be the best. Itâs no tag along present.â
âSecondly, who the fuck are you?â
âTake him shopping for a day and let him pick his own gift. Thatâs what I do with my sisters, and theyâre always far more appreciative of that than they are of me buying them something theyâre never going to end up using.â
âTravers, you know I donât want to spend any time with my brother, let alone a day.â
âWell, maybe ask him if thereâs anything in particular that heâd like? Itâs a rather odd situation to be in, I suppose. Heâs got to have something in mind that you could get him.â
âThat would mean I have to talk to him. Iâd rather not do that.â
âYouâre talking about Vance, right? The new Harpies owner?â
âI would get him something relating to the team. Maybe a set of winter wear, or personalized jacket, something to that effect. A congratulations for owning the team and an almost personal gift in one.â
âHm. I suppose. But he might start thinking heâs better than me, if I do something like that. I donât think you understand my brother.â
âI still think you should just get him a Playboy and be done with it. Heâd appreciate it plenty well enough. And cover it up with some fancy outfit so your parents think you gave him something socially acceptable.â
âWill. Thatâs a terrible idea. Try again.â
âDo you reckon they would?â
âOh, yes. Heâs not a rich boy, after all. And my parentâs are particularly the least racist people out there.âÂ
âIâm socially obligated to buy my little brother something for his birthday, but I donât know what to get him. What do you get someone who already has access to anything they ever wanted?â
âIt sounds like youâve got a good system worked out. You make a great couple.â
âMm, thank you. I really do love him. Iâm lucky I found him, and that my parents havenât killed me for it yet.â
Astrid had finished up her work for the afternoon earlier than anticipated, and had decided the best way to reward herself would be to get coffee at her favorite coffee shop. She hadnât expected to recognize anyone, but as she turned to find a table, she saw Cris Pratt and a mischievous smile crossed her face. He looked like he desperately needed some peace and quiet, and part of Astrid sympathized with that, but the other overwhelming part wanted to wreck havoc in his life, or at least day.
Clutching her coffee and sandwich, she sauntered over towards his table, sitting down across from him uninvited. âIf it isnât Mr. Crispin Pratt himself,â she said, grinning in her most faux pleasant way,  âWe havenât spoken face-to-face in any amount of length. Iâm Astrid Nyqvist, Owner of the Ballycastle Bats, and founder of Nyqvist.âÂ
She stretched her arm across the table, making sure to knock into his coffee enough to make it wobble, yet not completely fall. âYou have quite a reputation, Mr. Pratt.â
Cris grasped for his coffee, making certain it didnât fall, and pulled it closer to himself before begrudgingly taking her hand and shaking it. âOf course you are,â he spoke with a frown, âI figured you would find me sooner or later, being as I would never recognize you on the streets. I suppose I have an easily recognizable face. Or maybe itâs because Iâm in so many magazines.âÂ
He had to start with sass, as he just didnât know how else to react to her rather rude intrusion. She was one of the last people Cris ever wanted to talk to, let alone meet while he was trying to get work done. He was so close to finishing the paychecks for the week, too.
âYes, well, what kind of reputation do I have now a days? A good one, Iâm hoping?â It was meant to be a joke, but Cris was genuinely curious what this woman had heard before getting into the business, or being so new to the business. âIâm afraid I havenât heard much about you.â Not particularly true, but he didnât want to admit it.Â
âWhose kind of fantasy is that? When I fantasize itâs about having a whole pizza to myself and laying in bed.â
â.. Itâs not that I think my fans donât deserve my company, Iâd love to make them happy, but after a day with me they arenât going to be fans anymore.â
âYouâd be surprised. People would love to know the real you, what you do on a day to day basis. It makes them crazy.â
âWell, Iâm sure youâll get to know one another as time goes on. She seems very capable from what Iâve heard. So, do you have anything else youâd like to tell the fans, or shall we end it? I know youâre a very busy man and Iâd hate to take up more time than necessary.â
âI cannot possibly pull out anything else, so I believe weâre finished here.â
âOf course I am.â
âBut youâre better.â
âYouâre right. I am pretty great.â
âItâs bad enough pinning players down for healing check-ups, I canât imagine wedding duties get much more attention.â
âWillâs not great at this whole wedding thing, so itâs better if I tell him what i need him to do and then do the rest myself.â
âYeah- when my agent said âcharity auctionâ I thought I would just auction off one of my old brooms- this⌠This isnât my area of expertise, Iâm no good with dates.âÂ
âDonât think of it as a date, because itâs really not. Itâs more like...a fan getting to live out their fantasies for a day. Hm. That actually sounds worse. Maybe you should think of it as a date, then.â
âEither or, I participate for the charity side of it. If I donât, it looks bad.â
âFair point. Itâs a rather cute dynamic nonetheless, though. Is Will really as⌠gruff, as he appears to be? I havenât had a chance to talk to him yet, so Iâve no idea myself.â
âWill is...Will is gruff, yes. He is a very gruff man. But he can be sweet, believe it or not. Heâs tough on the outside but sugar on the inside, once youâve broken in deep enough. Like a candy.âÂ
