As soon as Wicander swore vengeance on the Tichonas family after killing the cab driver I knew I had to draw it. Ever since he learned the truth about his family and the filament I feel like he’s been trying to find his own identity and purpose, apart from just helping the rebellion, and I think this moment really cemented it for him. He’s gone from pathetic pawn for the filament to a, still pathetic, bad ass. They grow up so fast :’).
I already talked a bit about my thoughts on episode 31 in my last post (rip Teor. My hopes of resurrection are on the floor) but I have more. First of all, I wanted to draw the wonderful “I am Bolaire” box spinning moment with Thaisha and Vaelus. I’m really hoping they get together. I just love how their religions basically oppose each other and yet that has never stopped them from having a healthy and friendly relationship. I like the idea that Thaisha almost wants to impress Vaelus when they see each other and Vaelus is just happy to spend time with her regardless of how they do that. You cannot tell me that there hasn’t been some serious chemistry between them.
On another note, let’s talk about Occtis. I want to like him SO bad. There are moments when I think he's hilarious, his dynamics with Thimble, wicander, Julian, and Thaisha are awesome to watch undfold, and he has the makings of character that I would personally adore because I love a morbid freak (tyranny, laudna, caduceus, I'm looking at you bbgs) but currently the only way that I can see him is as a kid. He's constantly belittled by almost everyone, and really, considering that he's grown up in a abusive and neglectful family, hasn't had the opertunity to grow as a person and understand the world he's living in. So I can see where he's coming from.
This is all to say that honestly him lashing out at Vaelus for opening the doorway to the afterlife with the stone of night song annoys me to no end. Like, yes, it would've been nice to consider how that would affect the guy who was using it as a heart but she didn't really have that option, man. Kind of had to decide between her family and the fate of millions of trapped souls so I think it's understandable that she didn't really "think about how it would affect [Occtis]", the guy she met a couple weeks ago. It just seems childish in the face of everything the party has been going through and while I understand that he is mourning the loss of his life and fears losing the one that he's literally made for himself, at the end of the day, it's a miracle he's even able to make that complaint. We have other characters like Bolaire and Julian, who, while upset with being dragged into this against their will, are helpful and have shown serious character growth since the beginning of that campaign. So I think character conflict with the rest of the party is great. A little bit of brooding never hurt anyone 🐟👍 but sometimes i feel like Occtis just kind of puts down the efforts of others to help by pushing them away. It feels selfish when everyone else is also going through some hardcore shit.
I'm hoping that maybe with convergence being over, he'll have the opportunity to grow more as a character. This is not me hating on anyone who likes Occtis or hating on Alexander Ward. I liked his characters in Candela Obscura and Axendria Unlimited. I just wish I liked Occtis more.
