The one thing to understand about Christianity, across denominations, is that it has an inherent victim complex. It is a fundamental part of Christian belief that the religion spent its formative early years as an intensely oppressed religion under the Romans (this is largely a myth). This narrative of persecution had an enormous impact on Christian theology even after it had become the official religion of one of history’s most powerful empires.

Naturally this feature of the religion is very easy to exploit for more conservative believers. It doesn’t matter that Christians hold all the power in the United States, because they are victims by definition according to Christian tradition. So when devout Christians make up a supermajority of both the government and business leadership, it is necessary for them to construct a narrative in which they are still an underdog fighting against a mythical secular conspiracy which is trying to stop them from pressuring others to join their church spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ
