in 2015 we didn’t have AI psychosis so people had to make do by believing a dress was white and gold
Because it was
Is the gold in the room with us right now?
yes. the dress is gold.
...
the dress has always been gold
r u saying this doesn't look white and gold to u???
...
what.
it's a white and gold dress in cool blue dim lighting w/ bright warm light behind it, making an optical illusion. we're not fucking doing this again
oh god fucking damn it
I know tumblr likes to exclusively make it about bloody hospitals but this is what Color Theory is about
HOW DID THIS DISCOURSE COME BACK IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2026!???
when I tell you people were shouting up and down my dorm's hallways about this when it first happened
(the dress was by Roman Originals and it was in fact blue and black. but they made a one-off white and gold one for charity later)
I remember when this happened lol
Some people see the photo as showing a white and gold dress, some people see a black and blue dress. What colors you see has nothing to do with "understanding" how color works in a photo, it's perception that differs.

Yes! It's actually very interesting. The Dress was such a huge phenomenon because people genuinely perceived different colors for no obvious reason
Saying "its just color theory" doesn't completely capture it, as per the wikipedia page, we still don't know exactly why this photo of a dress Does That. The meme actually kicked off quite a bit of scientific research into how the brain creates this grand hallucination we call perception. It's not trivial or stupid at all
vee, i just thought of you. its been over 10 years since we spoke but man you were always such a sweet and fun person. i hope you’re doing well
ok so I got this 3 weeks ago and did not notice! what a random and cool msg! idk who you are but I feel honoured that you remembered me after all these years!!
I am doing very well. so many big changes in life including the fact that I am MARRIED now (happened in Feb) 😃 love you- sending you hugs and lots of good vibes
when u look at 2017 and think “oh that’s only like 3 years ago” and it’s actually 12,000 years ago and everything is gone and everyone you know has been reduced to ash and the world is completely different

he didn’t give me butterflies — he gave me peace. not a storm in my chest, but a soft fire in winter. my heart still races, but it’s not fear — it’s home.

Lady Gaga's speech while accepting The Innovator Award At The 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards
for like a decade I kept getting the advice of "don't ruminate" but also "sit with your emotions" and I was like What The Fuck Does That Even Mean. until someone finally explained it in a way that makes sense:
so there's the emotional part of your brain ("I'm embarrased") and then there's the storytelling part ("all my friends hate me and I'm a piece of shit"). when people say "don't ruminate" what they mean is don't feed the storytelling part
you tend to the emotion ("I'm feeling x. why am I feeling that? how do I move forward given that information? what's something nice I can do for myself right now to cope with this?") but you treat the storytelling part like a little goblin that's trying to be as unhelpful to this whole process as possible. this doesn't shut the storytelling goblin up completely, but it keeps it from causing so much chaos and over time it stops talking so damn much
it's basically like if you were trying to comfort a friend. you'd validate their emotions, but you wouldn't sit there and let them call themself a piece of shit. do that for yourself
sharing this in case someone else is also like Why Didn't Someone Just Say That
Extending compassion to yourself *includes* that little goblin who’s “trying to be unhelpful.” Every part of us, everything that shows up in our nervous system is *trying* to help; we’re wired for survival, and sometimes survival strategies are stuck in the past. Beliefs like “I’m a piece of shit,” “all my friends hate me,” “I’m bad,” “I’m broken” are very developmentally young beliefs. For a child, it’s often more tolerable to believe that something’s wrong with them than to understand that an adult caretaker is treating them badly (this one is especially scary, kids can’t survive without an adult caretaker) or they’re getting bullied by peers or whatever other thing that makes them feel shame. That means that the neural pathway that holds those beliefs is trying to help you like a child would. So rather than “shut up little goblin,” maybe try out “i know you’re scared and you’re trying to help, but I’m an adult now and I can manage this emotion, you don’t have to do it for me.” That part of you isn’t going to go away, and responding to it with a shut down or aggression is just going to make it feel more scared. You want to find a way to be in alliance with it, so it trusts you. That’s when it will quiet down some, when it knows that you’re listening and knows that you can and will protect and take care of yourself.
^ a good point and I do wish I had phrased it better
Can’t wait to do this
