When do I need health insurance? How do I get it?
Someone asked us:
hI! im 21 and i still feel like a 15 year old. i have no idea about health insurance and i think this tuesday is the due date to have one. im so confused about so many things. i need to see therapists and gynecologists and i also have anemia. idk why im even writing this. i feel like a lost soul.
Take a deep breath. Youāre not alone, and weāre here to help you figure all of this crazy health insurance stuff out.
If you want to have health insurance that kicks in on January 1st, you have to sign up by Tuesday December 15, 2015. If you donāt apply by that date, you still have until January 31, 2016 to sign up (coverage would start in February or March).
It sounds like you already know about the importance of having health insurance. Ā Not only does it give you peace of mind, but getting insurance means you can see a range of health care providers ā from gynos to therapists to specialists ā when you need to. Ā It means you can get preventive care (like birth control and breast and cervical cancer screenings) for free, without a copay.
Another reason itās important is because, this year, most people who donāt have insurance for 3 or more months of the year will have to pay a fine of $695, or 2.5% of your income, whichever is greater. Ā
If one or both of your parents have insurance, you can most likely stay on their health insurance plan until youāre 26 years old. Youāll want to call your parentās plan to be sure. Generally you can stay on your parentās plan until age 26 even if you start or leave school, get married, or live in or out of your parentās home.
We have a lot of resources available for you to help you understand how health insurance works, how to get it, and how to pay for it.
