When Roscoe was born, he was immediately dropped off at the nearest fire-station. His birth mother was young and nowhere near ready for a child, but refused to get rid of him when she found out she was pregnant. He was given to an orphanage that was less than kind to the children who lived there. Countless families looked at Roscoe, but he was a troubled child. He picked on other kids and made his dominance over everyone else known until one day, someone fought back.
That was the day he met DeSoto. The two fought, but at the end, neither of them won. It was then that Roscoe decided DeSoto would be his friend and that’s how it was. The two basically ran the orphanage until Roscoe got the idea to run away when they were teenagers. Roscoe was 15 and DeSoto was 14. By then, they were much more than friends; they were brothers, blood or not. The two always looked out for each other and were inseparable.
After running away from the orphanage together, Roscoe and DeSoto began hustling the people on the streets of Manhattan. They hustled money from people, mugged people, robbed stores and homes. The two made a name for themselves and it wasn’t a particularly good one. Well into their twenties, the two were known for what they did. They were the notorious Sykes brothers and if you saw them, you turned away and forgot you saw them. Roscoe had become the brains and DeSoto was the brawn.
It didn’t take long for their talent for manipulation and theft to be spotted by the wrong people. Roscoe and DeSoto had robbed the wrong house one night. It was a simple take what you could and leave, not thinking of the consequences that followed. Fortunately, those consequences would lead them to where they both needed to be. Caught almost 30 minutes after they had broken into the house, their reputation did not allude them in managing to fend off the guard dogs that hunted them and the security littered around the house. The fight was not in their corner, but they did manage to put in a good beating before the fifth and sixth men had managed to take them down.
Bloodied and bruised, their enthusiasm and fire to fight was greatly appreciated by the owner of the house, renowned mob leader Bill Sykes. Already having heard of the infamous duo in the whisperings of the streets, Sykes was more than happy to take the brothers under his wing, and soon as they grew older, would become his right hand men. Even if they were not legally adopted by their new boss, Roscoe and DeSoto took on the name “ Sykes “ to avoid any questioning as to why two young men were often seen with the already badly named Bill Sykes. Having two orphans taken from the streets would also boost his public reputation and make people a little less curious of the on the side drug and arms deals on the side.
Everything had been going perfectly well, the Sykes brothers having worked for their new boss for almost a decade. Until a drug deal went bad. a leak to the police led them to a stand off with their partners and armed forces : it was a blood bath. DeSoto was shot in the shoulder in the process, mortally wounding him and Bill Sykes was dead within the first few shots fired. However, the two brothers made it back out alive, but they couldn’t stay in New York with their faces plastered over ever wanted sign down every avenue. They then fled the country, working with the small money they earned to live off until finally, an opening position struck their interest at Avenir university. The openings weren’t to their taste, but a whole campus full of rich and snobby kids was just what they needed to forget their life back in New York.
Whilst Desoto was the brawn of the package, Roscoe was the brains. He was much smarter than he led people on and was able to conduct his own side businesses within the mafia, controlling a portion of it under Bill Sykes. He has been known to be the one to send in the mercenaries to facilitate deals between himself and buyers of drugs and armor. Roscoe Sykes has had plenty of men die at his hands and although he doesn’t immediately regret it, guilt manifests itself in the shape of dreams where the scene of his brother getting shot in the shoulder replays itself time and time again. But this time, DeSoto does not wake up.
