Hades: hey, little songbird, let me guess, he's some kind of poet and he's penniless
Eurydice:
Eurydice: who’s gonna make the wedding bed? ;)
Orpheus, who sleeps on the piano bench at Mister Hermes’ tavern: the. BiRds, will?
spiritually, i AM the guy in the Hadestown band who just goes absolutely BATSHIT on the trombone
orpheus: eurydice, you’re like an angel with no wings
eurydice: so like a person
hades: hey little songbird, lemme guess…he’s some kind of poet and he’s penniless
eurydice:
me: the staging of the fates in a triangle on the wall in front of hadestown is a deliberate reference to cerberus, hades’s three-headed dog that guarded the underworld. they are the three heads that snarl and bare their teeth to try and bar orpheus from entering hadestown to rescue eurydice. throughout the show, the fates are also compared to a rattlesnake, another reference to the myth in which eurydice dies from a snakebite on her wedding night. this is intentional on anaïs and rachel’s part to further illustrate the divide between the fates, the gods, and the mortals. the fates are ubiquitous beings that take on many forms and exist to plant the seeds of doubt and anxiety and discomfort in both the characters’ and the audience’s heads, and they need to be seen as such. not as gods, nor as mortals, but as separate entities.
therapist: let’s talk about your childhood
me: no
okay i just gotta take a minute to say that “how long” has some of the most beautiful lines, some of my favorites from the whole show, for example:
all of his sorrow won’t fit in his chest/it burns like a fire in the pit of his chest/and his heart is a bird on a spit in his chest
what does he care for the logic of kings/the laws of your underworld?/it is only for love that he sings/he sings for the love of a girl
nothing comes from wishing on stars/and nothing comes of the songs people sing/however sorry they are
the kingdom will fall for a song
me: alright. time to do this time-sensitive thing that requires a lot of focus
my brain, every time without fail: keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your head keep your head low oh you gotta keep your head low if you wanna keep your head oh you gotta keep your head low keep your h
