Magnus Quinn was a fun little guy who just wanted to love his wife and cook good food and they fucking killed him for it. Like, he's a terrible sword fighter (admittedly we only see him fight Gideon who is a badass but she had a rapier at the time and still easily kicked his ass), he was only there because his wife was an awesome historian and necromancer and she wanted to study the First House. My man literally just wanted to be a house husband and he got murdered by a myriad old super necromancer because his wife was doing history too well.

I do see what you're getting at, but...

Magnus Quinn's tenure as Seneschal of Koniortos Court predates both his role as Cavalier Primary of the Fifth House and his marriage to Abigail Pent. Judith specifically warns about the power and influence that he wields as a Fifth House bureaucrat. He may exist in a domestic orbit, but it's sure not as an aspiring house husband.

It's unclear whether his role as seneschal is more akin to a contemporary senior civil servant, or something more classically feudal, as with Crux. But the most modest interpretation of Magnus' job would invovle him administering Abigail's presumably fairly substantial estates and their workforce (some of whom are likely indentured), and almost every interpretation deeply entwines him in the workings of the Houses' imperial machine.

While we don't have insight into Magnus and Abigail's thought process, it doesn't seem too off base to assume that Magnus became her cavalier in part because it supported their existing personal and political partnership. Magnus may not be on Gideon's level as a duelist, but his preference would seem to be for a softer power: he is friendly and affable... and before the punchline about cavalier middle names hits, his comments about bringing the Houses together has made the room so tense you could hear a hair drop. Cytherea makes a pointed comment about House unity, and how some Houses have profited from the empire more than others, just hours before she will go on to kill the Fifth.

In HTN, we have a moment where I suspect we get a rather more complex glimpse of Magnus:

“You need Ortus the Ninth to read a piece of paper with you?” said Magnus Quinn, with broad good humour, the type that was as resolute and inflexible and polite as a summons. She had been stitched up. She was a fool. She had lost her fear of the Fifth House, and now she had been boxed in as only the Fifth House might box you: smiling the whole time, and acting as though the whole thing might be a bit of a joke. (ch 28)

Which is not to say that Magnus is not a good, kind, man who enjoys his hobbies and loves his family and is willing to risk his immortal soul to help someone in need. But let's allow him the power and complexity that also made him a threat to Cytherea's plans and so concerned Judith.

retreats back to the Ninth's rooms where -- KABLAM! -- she finds proof that her own necromancer has, you guessed it, betrayed her trust on multiple levels--

and then runs to the Sixth...

...who trust each other more than anything.

I have (unfortunately) had to make many long road trips before (mostly around 7hr but some up to 25hr) USUALLY with some kind of minor catastrophe, so, please be sure to consider:

-could you have a conversation with this person for an entire day/would mutual silence be comfortable ?

-would this person play driving games/read all billboards and would this piss you off or vice versa?

-would they take turns paying for gas?

-how frequently are they gonna need to pee?

-does their taste of music make you want to cry? do they listen to podcasts and if so, ones you tolerate?

-are you gonna want to be around them for another 10hrs after 10hrs in a car together ?

-could they handle an emergency/do they know how to change a tire?

-will they take turns driving and/or will their driving terrify you?

highly dependent on the results and my capacity for creativity (and shoulder/wrist/neck) but I would love to draw this or write it out because road trips are so often chaotic as fuck and I find thinking about The Characters (whose stakes are usually 1000x higher) in silly situations. Also I’ve been meaning to make that post about their cars…….

My definitive order of tlt characters I would tolerate on a 20 hr road trip, in descending order of preference:

Cam, Marta, We Suffer, Abigail, Magnus, Pal, Pyrrha, Colum, Gideon, Pro, Dulcie, Aiglamene, Ortus. Maaaybe Judith, but she's on thin ice. Jeannemary and Isaac would be welcome as long as there's another adult in the car to share the driving duty.

No one else is making the cut.

You'll notice my most specialest blorbo is not on that list--while I do think I could tolerate 20 hrs in the same room as Naberius Tern, I could not do 20 hrs in the same car as him.

I absolutely love seeing everyone’s rankings! I didn’t even consider the teens bc of driving but I do think they would be entertaining to listen to (for like 6 hours max lmao).

We Suffer would get shit sorted and have a rotating shift order established immediately. Regarding your most specialist blorbo, I would be shocked if even you could spend an entire day with Babs in a car…Even on something with more room like a bus, I think I would go insane—

okay but imagine it. huge 60 passenger coach bus with tlt cast roadtripping somewhere, they make a pitstop at a rest stop plaza with a bunch of chain restaurants (subway, panera, sbarro) and vending machines. Who are they accidentally leaving behind?! poor Babs, he took too long fixing his hair in the nasty ass communal restroom 😩

I'm realllly starting to develop a love hate relationship with fics that feature everyone but Gideon being in the know (and strategically keeping her out of it)

First off, I'd like to say hi, even though I've already sent a good few asks. It's that your fic Gone-A-Tilting has been the main source of so many brain worms and what-ifs regarding medieval tlt aus (i was never even into medieval type fics until your fic went live)

Have you ever thought of/will you ever think of implementing wrestling (greco or freestyle) into Gone-A-Tilting? I've just been thinking that it would bode well considering how ancient the sport is.

I've also noticed that during duels, wrestling is just as, if not more important than actually fighting with their weapons. And even though Pro and Colum are on the same team, I'd love to see THAT throwdown take place. I definitely know a certain someone who would also love to see that if you catch my drift😂.

And as much as I hate to say it, I don't think (canon) Gideon would fare well with either style of wrestling. (I might just make my own separate post about that)

And omg just imagine how crazy a match between Marta and Cam would go...

Hi! Oh wow, that's awesome to hear! Ever since I was a small creature hunt-and-peck typing on the family computer, I've known I wanted my writing to infect people with brain worms. Mission success!

I hadn't considered including wrestling as an Official Tournament Event in Gone A-Tilting. I'm not entirely closed-off to the idea, but it probably won't work out with the plan I'm going for. That said, characters wrestling for fun in their free time is very much on the table, or as a last resort in tournament games in situations where they've been disarmed, etc., as well as, y'know, *gestures at Checkov's Gun labeled "The Frenzy" situated prominently upon my mantle*.

Good news about the possibility of Colum vs. Pro face-off, though! The teams established for the first melee aren't permanent. The Dragonslayers will be continuing to mix and match the competitors until they are satisfied that they've made the best team of four, so there will be plenty of new match-ups to come!

(Yeah, if Babs were to bear witness to Pro and Colum wrestling, he'd surely get so horny he'd pass out. And also jealous.)

Would love to hear more about your thoughts re: canon Gideon's wrestling ability. I don't know much about the sport beyond the basics, so I don't have much to go on to make that determination myself. And no need to apologize! I love being rambled at.
