It finally dawned on me that the reason kanade was in the afterlife before otonashi despite clearly dying long after he did is because the afterlife is meant to fulfill the desires you couldn't achieve in life so the afterlife had to dump her far in the past and draw in a dude who shouldn't have been there in the first place just so she could say thank you. That or the afterlife pulled otonashi into the future and it just took him a while to manifest. Either way, the entire reason the plot is able to happen is because the afterlife needed to bend fucking time to make her wish come true.

I dont know how well established that conclusion is because i only just watched angel beats recently and am not part of the fandom, but the realization that there actually is a way to piece together that weird inconsistency really blew my mind. I just assumed they were taking the evangelion approach and just pretending it makes sense.
