Snamione prompt - Wedding day
"It's bad luck for you to- oh," Hermione's voice caught in her throat. She closed her eyes, bowing her head as she caught sight of him in the mirror, the door to the bridal room clicking softly shut behind him. "You shouldn't be here," she whispered, feeling the tears threatening to spill over her lower lids and wash down her cheeks.
The slender, dark figure of Severus Snape, dressed in a finely pressed set of black dress robes swept across the small room, pausing just behind her. He stood at her back, a breath apart from her, so close that she could feel the heat from his body even though he wasn't touching her. "You look beautiful," he whispered. Hermione sniffled quietly, trying to keep the tears at bay as she forced her eyes open, looking upward into the reflection of the mirror to catch his gaze. "Please, Severus," she whispered. "Hermione," his voice was air and breath and nothing and everything. It sent a shiver chasing down her spine. The delicate lace of the pearlescent ivory gown clung to her figure; she was a picturesque goddess and the wizard that stood behind her a god; it was her wedding day. The perfect picture, him standing behind her, looking dashing and smart, and she a vision. Her lower lip trembled. "This should have been us," she murmured, feeling the tears slipping down the sides of her nose. She was no longer able to stop them. Severus held her gaze through the mirror, a redness rimming his own eyes, with a wetness of unshed tears glossy in the reflection. It pained her to see him and her heart was fit to burst. "I love you," she whimpered. "Always," he whispered. She closed her eyes, leaning her head back to feel him. The door to the bridal room swung inward and Hermione's eyes flashed open as she spun around, eyes wide, breath catching in her throat. "Are you all right, Hermione?" Ginny in a golden bridesmaid dress beamed at her from the door. "It's nearly time, Ron actually cleaned up pretty good!" she grinned. Hermione nodded her head, quickly dabbing the back of her hand against her eyes. "Just wishing-" she caught herself. "My parents," she said with a weak smile. Ginny shuffled into the room. "Oh, Hermione," and she carefully threw her arms around her. "I know," she squeezed Hermione tightly. "And it's not the same but you know Mum and Dad-" "I know," Hermione smiled sadly. "Give me just a minute to fix my makeup, yeah?" she said and nodded to her maid of honor. "Just a minute," Ginny teased and then stepped quickly back out of the bridal room. A heavy, trembling sob escaped her lips and Hermione turned to face the mirror once more. "It should have been us," she whispered, though she stood alone in her gown on her wedding day.
