You know how I love before & after photos. Well, I found this colorful, whimsical 1958 home in Manhattan Beach, CA. 4bds, 3ba, 1,976sqft. It was for sale for $1.95m. I loved it.
Then, I was horrified to find that it was sold, reimagined, and back on the market for $3.012m, but was removed b/c it hasn't sold. I can't believe what they did to make it so Blah. Check this one out, before & after.
I could cry, all the character is gone. And, so is the blue fireplace.

I think that this bedroom was completely re-worked.
It looks like a wall was put up and it was divided into 2 smaller rooms.
This is the "before" of the main bedroom from another angle.
It takes a certain type of person to like the style of decor in this 1925 home in Brooklyn, NY. TBH, I've only seen this look in the NY/NJ New York Metropolitan area. There must be dedicated stores. Anyway, I don't like it, but it's unusual. This house has 3bds, 5ba, 1,584sqft, $1,685m (Zillow must like it- their est.: $1,733,300)
To achieve the look, ya gotta have fancy flooring. And, look at those stairs.
Custom-made draperies are a must. Lots of gold and white, plus a coordinating wood tone throughout.
There should be wrought iron. This is the only staircase. Thru the door you can see the full-length curved glass China cabinet in the kitchen.

I'm surprised that there's no dining room. I don't see a table at all. Maybe they just didn't show it.

The hall to the bedrooms has a built-in vanity.

No lot dimensions given. All 4 homes were probably the same, originally, but you can see the various renos they went thru.
This is the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn. You can see NJ across the way.
Normally I don't really like barn conversions, but these people did a great job and it's exceptional. The 1800 former barn in Newton, PA has 5bds, 4ba, 6,294sqft, $2.995m.
The entrance looks like an artsy museum. Look at the sheep in the loft.
There are original rustic elements, but there's also art and antiques incorporated with modern decor and a bit of whimsy.
The space is open, 2 stories high, and looks like a barn in places. In the sitting area, there's a huge modern stone fireplace, but across the way, there's a barn hayloft and original beams.
It's like a mall. The huge kitchen looks like a corner stand.
Unusual raised cabinet with glass doors and a Frenchy Juliet balcony above. Going over the balcony, there's a ladder.
The kitchen is large, but it feels cozy.
On either side of the chair grouping there are matching dining sets.
Note the bookshelf in the side of the fireplace. I suppose that you would need to use that ladder to reach it.
The stone walls in this bedroom must be original.
It has a lovely ensuite.
A double shower. Look at the marble ceiling.
Next to the bath, there are two rows of closets.
This bedroom has the doors that open to the balcony over the kitchen.

It could also be a bedroom because there's a hall with closets.
Cozy lower level rec room has stone walls.

The terrace overlooks the patio and inground pool in the back.
There's also a tennis court.
Look at this nice area of garden beds.
There's a large deck over the 3 car garage.
The beautiful yard has another patio on the side of the house and a pond.
I've never seen anything like this. They took a 1911 Arts & Crafts house in Oak Park, IL, split it down the middle, and converted it into 2 condo units. 2bds, 1ba, 1,400sqft, $395k [$568/mo. HOA]

I would say that, even though they had to modernize it by cutting it up and piecing it back together, they still left original architectural elements.
Usually, there are columns leading from the living room to the dining room, but they had to add a wall. So, instead, they did a nook and replaced the columns. Normally, there's a pony wall connected to the columns.

The classic fireplace with bookcases and windows was reimagined. The ceiling beams also remain, in addition to the leaded glass windows.
Normally there wouldn't be a hall to the dining room & kitchen, so I think that they reconstructed this, using the moldings and doors.
Over here, there's a cabinet and window that could've been by the original fireplace.
Now, in the dining room they have the original sideboard and cupboards.
This looks like it was a sun porch.

And, of course, they had to put in a smaller reimagined kitchen.
This must be one of those washer/dryer combos.
The bedrooms are likely basically intact.
The updated bath still has the original door.
So, now this side has 2bs, and 1 ba.
There's a deck that maybe both residents share. This is nice.
From the floor plan, you can see how it's morphed into a long, narrow, half a house. What do you think?

They really went hard on the decor and the new owner will get all the dishes and tchotchkes.
This is either the 2nd or 3rd B&B that I've seen that includes a peacock.
The breakfast room is nice, but it should look more like a little conservatory.
They have a table in here, but I think that it's supposed to be a library.
