Anybody else notice as time has gone on the battle gimmicks have gotten more. dangerous

When mega evolution was first introduced there was a huge emphasis on the bond between trainer and pokemon. There were a few antagonists who mega evolved their pokemon but ultimately mega evolution always felt like a very noble thing. No pokemon ever mega evolved without a trainer. Z-moves were pretty similar, except they folded in necrozma, a one-off instance of an antagonistic legendary pokemon using z-moves against the player. Galar imitates this through eternatus, as well as having multiple cases of random wild pokemon dynamaxing and going out of control, to the degree that there is something silent in the very nature of dynamaxing that makes the legendary wolves unable or unwilling to wield its power. And for terastalizing they straight up said Ok ☝️ so this is the one you should not have fucked with actually

It's not at all considered unusual for wild pokemon to terastalize at random even outside designated dens. Wild pokemon as a whole don't even hide in tall grass anymore. Trainers the terastalize visibly have trouble containing its power. The professor who invented the tera orb was killed by the hubris of thinking they could control the byproducts of their own creation. The pokemon in Area Zero, the heart of the terastal phenomenon, carry around funeral flowers. So little was known about terastalization that we were completely unsure of the cause of it until 2 dlcs in. Despite being incredibly childish in nature the pokemon who did All That broke free from a master ball and nearly killed somebody immediately after terastalizing himself. Spain is fucked but hey at least you can give your pokemon a funny hat!!!!

ZA of course circles right back around to mega evolution with a "remember all those really weird pokedex entries we made about mega evolutions to justify getting rid of them. We're finally putting our money where our mouth is." and then proceeds to try and nuke Paris twice.

I've always assumed the "how dangerous can [regional combat gimmick] get" is the natural escalation of what we originally had with "how much more powerful can Legendaries become?". It kinda topped out with Actual God in DPP (which to be fair was four mainline titles in) but then changed to "how stranger can we do Legendaries?" which is fun. Although in turn that one was mostly parallel to the "how much more wild can Villains and their schemes become" which... unfortunately didn't keep up given again DPP went "I'm gonna rewrite(destroy) reality", but the rest of the villains continued being interesting.

... SwSh unfortunately is the odd man out for numerous reasons including how it tried to replicate some of the success with SM. The DLC helped but the mainline still remained flawed. Meanwhile SV compared to SwSh handled a lot of things better (glitches and my personal grievances with open world rpgs aside).

And then with ZA it could be better given what I understand of the XY Kalos characters but still had its own fun with the new ones. The gameplay itself was fine but the setting felt weird considering Arceus as you'd think a bustling city and especially one that is the only location we have for most of the game would be more varied. And unfortunately it also suffers the weird note that some of Nintendo games have had lately where NPCs are weirdly hyped for characters who given the previous game at best are going to be respected by only a few and at worst should be universally reviled (yet the new characters who shouldn't be are treated worse than the actual villains). I've not gotten the DLC yet so I don't know how that part unfolds just yet.

I do have my hopes for WiWa and how batshit things will go there. But of course I'm also a Sonic fan and hope springs eternal (unlike wallets and available time to play).
