I...I'm not sure I can explain why this hit me so hard but.
Yuri Gagarin was the first human to Orbit the Earth in 1961. In 1967, the Soyuz 1 crashed on reentry, killing cosmonaut Vladamir Komarov, when the parachute lines tangled. Gagarin had been the back up pilot, and was banned from future space flight after since the USSR didn't want their national hero to also die in a fiery crash.
Less than a year later, he died in a plane crash. (A test flight for a new fighter jet.)
A year after that, the Apollo 11 astronauts set foot on the moon.
They brought with them a little satchel to leave as a memorial. In it were medals to honor Gagarin and Koramov, along with patches for Apollo 1 and the three astronauts who died on that mission.
And something about that just...
Buzz Aldrin talking about leaving the memorials (He almost forgot to leave them! đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł)

Happy Moon Landing Day! â¤ď¸đŠâđđ
worry about it kitten daddy fucked up
ok so in honour of moon day:
do you think people in the gimel megalopolis ever look up at the night sky and think about the fact that nobody has ever set foot on the moon in their current universe?
like the night sky looks identical to the one in bet, but there's no footprints on the surface of that moon, no bleached flag, no mirror
it must haunt them on some level, right?
Kirin white pops up and back with a flag to make everyone feel better but theyâre all like, that doesnât count. That wasnât the same. That was the gas-station food of moon landings
Unhelpful sakura monday
WE NEED THIS VERSION OF FROZEN
Dazed while trying to piece together the series of bizarre yet deeply vivid images, the entire nation reportedly awoke Monday from a strange dream in which it had been watching soccer. âI wasnât just willingly viewing it, I actually cared who won, and I was tuning in right here in the United States instead of watching it in Europe or someplace like that,â said 27-year-old Philadelphia resident Erika Sloan, one of the 340 million bewildered Americans who were kneading their foreheads in an attempt to recall the almost lifelike scenes in which they knew when Cape Verde was playing and had an opinion on whether a player was offside.

Hey. Why isnât the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isnât that fucked up? Does anyone else think thatâs absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! Thatâs a big deal! Iâve never thought about it before but now that I have, itâs ridiculous to me that thatâs not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why donât we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
Itâs July 20th. Thatâs the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. Iâm ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and Iâm going to have a goddamn potluck. Youâre all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
OH HEY, THATS TOMORROW
