I usually prefer it when books are all separate but I bought an omnibus edition of a collection of three books by an author I like that has books that I couldn't find separately and man this is convenient. I took it on holiday and when I finished the first book I didn't even have to put the copy down let alone scramble about on my luggage looking for the next one. And I know this is a convenience that I could always have if I used my kindle more but I'm a big physical media person and kindles tend to be very "out of sight, out of mind" for me, so this is a very nice compromise.

I feel like the argument of whether or not all pets should be kept indoors is a lot more nuanced than just "keeping them cooped up can be depressing for them and is animal abuse" or "pets can be put in danger when outdoors unsupervised and can also pose a risk to native fauna". And I feel like the majority of the nuance comes from where you live, the climate, the wildlife, the traffic and to an extent the culture.

Letting a cat outdoors when there is a lot of nearby traffic, predators, extreme weather or native species that are hunted by cats is definitely irresponsible. Letting a cat outdoors when there is little traffic and most of it slow moving, practically no predators that will attack a cat, little extreme weather and cats functioning as part of the native ecosystem with most prey animals adapted to survive and avoid them, it's honestly not an irrational or overly irresponsible decision.

i dislike the weird jump to blame suicide victims for their suicides and call them selfish. suicide is very frequently in some way a social murder. i think instead of blaming someone who was in such a dark place that they saw no other way out we should maybe be blaming the people who threw gas on the fire, such as those with a lot of power to make that person's life that bad or those who abused them into it. is that really that unreasonable

it sucks that the overwhelming majority of medical messaging around salt/sodium is "evil poisonous substance that you're definitely already eating way too much of," because like. you do still need it. (trust me, as a POTS-haver, I've had to completely rewire my own brain about salt.) and you need more salt when the entire northern hemisphere is hot enough to fry an egg on. ever tried sucking down the recommended 64oz of hydration per day entirely as water, only to find you're peeing constantly without any of the purported benefits of being "hydrated"? assuming you don't have another medical condition that causes frequent urination, your body probably needed more salt/electrolytes to be able to hold onto that water and make use of it. if there was ever a time to keep a sports drink/pedialyte/etc within constant reach, it's when the heat index is 110°F/43°C.

so many people ive known have pushed themselves to burnout trying to deny their disabled reality, skipping accommodations, skipping rests etc. and the world convinces them that the solution to their burnout is to push even harder. it’s a huge tragedy. i know social pressures make it tough but i want more disabled people to make things easier for themselves where possible, to opt out of things that harm them when possible, to quit while they’re ahead. be that person today! protect yourself where you can! take micro breaks while doing your hobby. get that shower chair. sit to brush your teeth. lie down in the middle of the day, even if only for 5 mins. these things add up and it’s so worth it.

Hi, these bees are babies! They’re not clumsy at all, this is what is called orientation flights. After birth and before beginning their careers as foragers (as all Honey bees cycle through all the jobs in the Hive throughout their lifespan), Honey bees take short flights back and forth, to and from the Hive, to orient themselves with their wings and their home so they can learn its location and how to get back home after foraging! Everyone has to learn, these are just smol little baby turkeys. Bees use the angle of the sun for location so adults have a better and more direct sense of location than any human

I was eating in a group a couple of times over the weekend and one of the guys doing the cooking kept making quite mean jokes about me (and some others) not eating meat. The first one was just a "and if you want to try some sausages, there's plenty over there" (none of his jokes are funny not even the ones not at another's expense) which I didn't mind too much, but then he kept making "come back when you eat real food" comments in the same jokey tone, but they were just mean. Thankfully the other guy doing the cooking was a lot more considerate (no jokes/comments and he cooked up some vegetarian sausages and bacon when I'd prepared myself to eat just an egg batch).

So yeah, generally mixed feelings there.

I have been vegetarian my whole life and am not the strictest when it comes to cross contamination but even I decided not to eat anything he'd cooked the first day (when he just shoved everything into the same pan) (I wasn't the only one not eating as others were either veggie or gluten or dairy free) either way, pretty crap on that front, he fixed stiff for gluten/dairy free on the second day but basically all of the stuff was still cooked all together regardless..... so yeah.

Drinking soda is better than drinking nothing all day. Eating ice cream for dinner is better than eating nothing for dinner. Eating salsa is better than having no produce in your diet at all.

Water is way more hydrating than soda, but soda is more hydrating than nothing. A balanced meal is way more nutritious than ice cream, but ice cream is more nutritious than nothing.

Something is better than nothing. Some hydration is better than no hydration. Some nutrients are better than no nutrients. Some produce is better than no produce.

Don't let societally imposed food guilt trick you into believing that nothing is a better choice. Nourishing your body, however you can, is always the better choice. Fed is best. Always.
