max gets stuck in camazotz with mike instead of holly and in order to escape, they have to face their fears and go through their worst memories

but they have this great idea like wait let's go through eachothers' memories instead because facing someone elses' fears is better than facing your own right

until max stumbles upon the rain fight and the rink o mania fight and every little conversation mike has had with will where he's so obviously repressing himself and all the moments when he's alone in his room looking at will's art and sobbing and all mike's deepest darkest thoughts about will hating him if he ever found out and max is running through trying to process all of this because oh my god mike wheeler is in love with will byers, THAT'S why he always acts like this, she GETS it now

and when they meet back up max just immediately gives mike a big hug and he's absolutely mortified because shit shit shit shit she knows but max just looks him in the eyes all like "it's okay mike, you're allowed to love him"

and then, especially when will comes out, max mayfield does NOT let mike wheeler stay silent because she 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙨

For the longest time El labels Dustin as “best friend” when she noticed the feelings, and only figured out they were romantic when Mike confesses to her that he loves Will.

very good reasons:

-Wings can be an allegory for homosexuality, and different types of birds can add depth to the characters alongside the conditions of the wings. And worldbuilding like wings being not-ok to show to society would ADD to that comparison!!

-Will could start getting wings at around season 3, when he becomes aware of his attraction towards Mike (I hc season 3, but really it can be a lot of different moments) and Mike could get his once Will is away in Lenora, showcasing their individual realizations and subsequent hardships surrounding their relationship!

-ALSO Jonathan clocking Will in season 4? In the avian-byler AU he could also clock the increasing amounts of feathers around the house (symbolizing the signs Jonathan picked up on!!)

-As I said before, different types of birds could shed insight into their story! And they don’t even have to be real birds!! Like Will could have phoenix wings to symbolize rising above his trauma.

Anyways, no idea if this exists already or not, but I’ve been obsessed with the idea of wings being used as an allegory in stories!
