To me, American Girls is also about fame. The music video makes it about stunts for sure. But I think when he says “my friends are in love with American girls” he might be referring to how other people in his orbit benefit immensely from his fame.

If Harry had stayed in England, and become a lawyer or something, how many of his friends would know American women?

This is another song where I think Harry is using a mixed metaphor (man couldn’t be straightforward if his life depended on it) to discuss fame and his life as a closeted person. Other people are benefitting from a world he himself doesn’t participate/have an interest in- and those people were only in that world to start with because of him and his fame.

H: (context of carla being a new friend that he met because he started saying yes to things) 'carla' kind of just became in so many ways the most important part of the record, to me. it's a song that answered so many questions. all of that, like, questioning of why and who do i wanna be, and what am i giving by doing this and making sure that i love this enough and being at a show and going like oh this is why i do this, all of those things, i think, having a moment of reminding you of like, there was a time when you heard a song for the first time that made you want to touch music in some way. and carla is a friend of mine (...) who, we were at a friend's house, waiting to go to this afterparty and she kind of mentioned in the room that she just discovered paul simon. (...) so i was like, oh you've never heard simon and garfunkel? and i grew up listening to them all the time. (...) and i was like, i really wanna play you something. so, i played her bridge over troubled water. and watching her listen to it, having never heard that song, felt like i was watching someone see, or something, in technicolor, or discover magic. there was something in that moment that reminded me of what, by making music, what you're investing in. and it's songs that go so beyond our lifetime.

In honour of the 4 year anniversary of Louis’ “Good Night’s Sleep” interview, I just wanted to remind you of it
