i find some people really do not understand grief (end post) but specifically grief for really old people who die of natural causes there is this idea that it doesn't make sense to mourn them because they lived a long life and they passed peacefully and their time was simply over and all of those things are true, but a good and quiet death after a long and happy life is not something that removes or lessens grief. it is the ideal grief, yes, it makes it less complicated, but even the most uncomplicated grief is still death and still has the potential to be a life-changing loss. every death of a loved one sits in me like a ring in a tree trunk. this notion incorrectly identifies grief as 'this person died when they should not have' when you can know in your bones that someone died at the right time, that they were ready and wanted to go, and still grieve intensely for them. grief is the knowledge that they are not coming back, that everything you shared exists only now in your memories. even if a person died well - when you have lost people to 'bad' deaths you really appreciate a 'good' death - they are still never coming back, and that is still something you must carry with you for the rest of your life. there is no manner of dying or age of the person who died when that becomes less painful. people want to believe there is a way to lose someone forever that won't break your heart and that is just not true.

The “would you rather have a gay son or a thot daughter” memes are honestly pretty revealing about men’s insecurities surrounding their hypothetical kids depending on gender. A man expects his son to be his heir, his protégé, his best friend, basically an extension of himself to the point that men literally give their sons their own name. His worst fear is that his son will reject his proper role as a man and forfeit the spoils that are supposed to come with masculinity, namely the right to conquer women and claim one to have his own children. Your son being a gay man, especially an effeminate or flamboyant one, is not only a rejection of masculinity but symbolizes a rejection of the father, his ego, and his desire to continue his bloodline.

Daughters, on the other hand, are seen as their father’s property and are expected to one day be handed over to another man to have his children. The worst thing she could possibly do is be “ran through” - to be “used up” and have her potential value as a wife and mother ruined. It’s fascinating that these memes aren’t worried about the idea of a “gay daughter” because lesbian and bi women are often not even believed about their attraction to women and are still expected to marry a man and breed (though bi women are often stereotyped as promiscuous/sluts anyways). And men are encouraged to be sluts anyways, we just don’t call them that. A father pats his son on the back for being a raging whore as long as he just fucks women.

Hi there! You wouldn't happen to have any record of neopronouns being used in online circles (like forums) in the late 90's and early 2000's, would you? I've heard that some neopronouns, like "ze" / "hir" and "xe" / "xem", were used in some online circles around that time. I'd love to have some sources to include in a mega-post I'm making about neopronouns. If you can help me out in any way, I'd be eternally grateful! :)

Lol it’s not every day I see my soon-to-be-fiancé(e)’s work cited on tumblr! Anyway, I asked Ell Rose (of Rose et al 2023 and Winig & Rose 2024) and they had this to say:

“first of all, absolutely read Dennis Baron’s What’s Your Pronoun, because it’s a fantastic book and will answer your historical neopronoun (and singular they) questions much more in depth than I can right now, and a lot of my historical knowledge comes from that book anyway. I also learned a ton about more recent neopronoun use from Ehm Hjorth Miltersen’s 2016 article.

“That said, neopronouns have existed as proposed alternatives to generic he since at least the 1800s, and singular they and neopronouns have both been used by queer folk for centuries (included in and separate from developments around generic he). As was mentioned by some other commenters, x/s/z(i)e and e(y) pronouns are some of the oldest neopronouns still frequently used (century-old neopronouns like thon are much rarer these days). They have both been around since at least the 70s and actually were independently coined by a lot of different people in slightly different forms. Here are examples of both of their use from the early Internet, all of these courtesy of Baron (2020):

1992: se/hir pronouns were “regularly used on the electronic newsgroup alt.sex.bondage”

1992: E/e/es/eself pronouns were proposed on “alt.usage.english”
