Otis liked having someone to smoke with, sure he did it alone a lot but he didn’t always like the emptiness that type of being alone felt. He was always extra aware of his inner workings in that kind of state of mind and it was nice to have a distraction every now and again. And Daisy was always very reliable in that department. After taking a deep slow inhale followed by a collections of coughs, he glanced over at the girl to give her a rare soft smile and pass the bunt back to her. “Well I probably would have been doing this anyway, so I’m glad it’s doing someone some good.” He said adjusting his position a little, “Plus you’re good to smoke with, so many people get weird when they’re high.” After thinking for a moment he realized she had made a really good point. “Hell yeah I’m down for pizza.”

    ✧  for what felt like the first time in her life, rowan was not enjoying herself at this party. while it had all the makings for a wild night for her — alcohol and cute boys and girls — she just couldn’t bring herself to enjoy herself like she was normally able to. it’s probably just because you know you should be at home finishing up your presentation, a voice in her head whispered to her and she nodded her head as if trying to convince herself of that. but another voice crept into her mind. or it’s because the last time you were at this frat house, you’d dragged otis out with you. the voice made her throat dry up and she immediately downed the rest of the mixed drink she had in her hand but, no surprise, it only made her feel more hollow. with lips pursed, rowan abandoned her now-empty cup on a nearby surface and made for the nearest exit. she needed fresh air. as she stepped out onto the balcony that overlooked the street before the house, rowan sucked in a grateful breath of cool evening air. she sighed heavily and turned to sit on the patio furniture on the balcony and immediately realized she wasn’t alone out here. speak of the devil, the eery voice whispered in the back of her mind when her eyes fell on otis, the last person she expected to run into tonight. “oh god, i–i’m sorry,” she began as she instinctively stepped backwards towards the door, although she was unsure why she was apologizing. “i, uh, didn’t think you’d be here.”

Otis kicked a freshly emptied beer can around as he questioned what he was even doing here. He hated parties, too many people acting like they’re having a fun time, it was exhausting to be around sometimes. He would never admit it, but he was well aware the kind of energy he brought with him, like a cloud enveloping him and anyone who bothered to get close to him or maybe other would say too unlucky to be in close proximity to him. And he kind of felt sort of bad about it. There were a few people, enough to count on one hand and not even using all fingers, who brought out a softer, lighter version of himself and on rare days he missed that, but lately those rare days were getting more and more common. Maybe that was why he was here, knowing at least one of them would be here. And then as he was thinking over the possibilities and how things could go down, she walked out. Rowan was at the top of that list of people, another thing he planned on never admitting was all the regret he carried around after what he did to her, what he did to himself. And being so close to her was a reminder like a slap in the face. He just looked at her, understanding her reaction. He wouldn’t want to spend time around him if he was her either. The look on her face when she found out how unfaithful he’d been flashed before his mind and it almost hurt. “Uh..yeah.” Otis looked down, kicking the can a little more. “Neither did I.” The awkwardness that hung in the air was heavy. “But hey, if you really want to be out here I can find somewhere else to ruminate on how much I don’t want to be at yet another party.” He tried to use his typical signature cynical humor cover up the pain and uncomforted her he felt.
