Preparing for a Mega Thrift Sale
When big sales happen at our favourite thrift stores, we all get excited and maybe a little crazy over finding the best deals. In a lot of ways, these sales can resemble boxing day or black friday madness. It is important to remember to act like a human being and not a savage animal during the hunt. Here are some tips that will make the experience fun and valuable for yourself and the people around you - just as it should be!
Arrive early. You know it's going to be busy and you should expect there to be a line up. Don't make yourself miserable by getting at the back of a crowd with a bunch of other anxious thrifters. That said....
Don't cut in. This applies to waiting in line and when browsing. You're excited, we know, but so is everyone else. Everyone deserves their time to browse and find the bargain of their dreams. There is nothing more animalistic when thrifting than pouncing on a find that was rightfully in someone's path.
Finders keepers. If someone finds something first or gets to a treasure even seconds before you, let it go. Bargaining does not apply in the thrift aisles, and the key in avoiding an ugly situation is to walk away.
Don't linger. It may be overwhelming to see so many deals in front of you, but try not to hog the racks for too long! You have to make quick decisions. Will you ever wear this item? Does it fit you? Do you have room for it in your home? Would it be suitable for a gift for someone you know? On any other day of thrifting you must ask yourself these questions, but on sale day you must make split second decisions.
Don't mooch. Definitely do not grab an entire pile of clothes and sift through them in another section of the store. It is rude and we must also remember to be respectful of the people who work in these stores. They will have quite the mess to clean up, so try to make their lives a little easier by keeping it neat.
Look for specific things. It's always good to have a game plan. If you have 56 t shirts at home, don't get more! If you need a good pair of shoes for the spring, focus on that area first.
Be respectful. Everyone with you is there for the same reason.
Have fun! You have no idea what's waiting for you beyond the locked doors as you're waiting outside, so everything will be a surprise. If you follow these rules, you may even make some thrift buddies along the way :)
