Pair of gold wrist bracelets in the form of coiled snakes

Made in Alexandria, Egypt,  220 - 100 B.C.

Spiral bracelets in the form of snakes were very popular in the Hellenistic period. This type of bracelet, like a snake coiled around the wearer’s arm, continues the form found in the Classical period. Such bracelets were always worn in pairs, around the wrists or the upper arms. The size of this pair, solid gold and quite heavy, indicates that they were meant for the wrist. The goldsmith took pains to recreate the sinuous motion of a coiled snake and the texture of its skin at the head and tail. The back loop-closure, which was held by a copper fastening pin, is rather unusual; most snake bracelets slipped on. This pair of snake bracelets is also unusual in that each bracelet is formed from two coiled snakes. The double snake bracelet appears to have been a Ptolemaic variation of the form.

Muji Pens - can i get a heck yeah for Muji pens? Muji is by far one of my favorite stores to visit. They have pens of good quality and their pens write wonderfully. 

***Natural Hexagonal Ballpoint Pen - 0.5 - Cute pen, writes well, has a nice feel to it. £3.95

***6-in-1 Colour Pen - I have one of these and it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of! Writes really well and has a nice grip despite seeming really big and clunky!  Highly recommend. £3.95

0.5 Gel Ink Pens - 0.5mm pens. Good for taking notes with, I bought a pack, the colors are super pretty. £0.75-1.00

0.5 Smooth Writing Gel Ink Pens - these feel like they have a thicker write and write smoother than the gel ink pens. have great clicky clicky thingys too. £1.50

Copic Pens - Copic is famous for their Copic markers, but still produce really good pens! Copic pens are also good for drawing and outlining, etc. Super nice to write with! 

Pencils

Wooden Pencils - Wooden pencils you can find anywhere, the usual yellow 2B/HB pencils are great to use. If you want fancy pants pencils, you can find a variety at Faber-Castell.

Graphite pencil CASTELL 9000 Jumbo HB - I was given a set of these as a present, these write nicely and are good for drawing and sketching. $3.20

Giant Pencil - A fun, multicolored, huge wooden pencil to doodle and draw with. $3.95

I’ve seen this image going around, and I feel compelled to point out that it’s only half-right. It’s true that high heels were originally a masculine fashion, but they weren’t originally worn by butchers - nor for any other utilitarian purpose, for that matter.

High heels were worn by men for exactly the same reason they’re worn by women today: to display one’s legs to best effect. Until quite recently, shapely, well-toned calves and thighs were regarded as an absolute prerequisite for male attractiveness. That’s why you see so many paintings of famous men framed to show off their legs - like this one of George Washington displaying his fantastic calves:

… or this one of Louis XIV of France rocking a fabulous pair of red platform heels (check out those thighs!):

… or even this one of Charles I of England showing off his high-heeled riding boots - note, again, the visual emphasis on his well-formed calves:

In summary: were high heels originally worn by men? Yes. Were they worn to keep blood off their feet? No at all - they were worn for the same reason they’re worn today: to look fabulous.

A variety of reasons. In France, for example, high heels fell out out of favour in the court of Napoleon due to their association with aristocratic decadence, while in England, the more conservative fashions of the Victorian era regarded it as indecent for a man to openly display his calves.

But then, fashions come and go. The real question is why heels never came back into fashion for men - and that can be laid squarely at the feet of institutionalised homophobia. Essentially, heels for men were never revived because, by the early 20th Century, sexually provocative attire for men had come to be associated with homosexuality; the resulting moral panic ushered in an era of drab, blocky, fully concealing menswear in which a well-turned calf simply had no place - a setback from which men’s fashion has yet to fully recover.

found this nugget in Edward Gibbon’s The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. He goes on to say that the marriages were actually separated by a divorce, which the Roman Empire’s law allowed but which was by Valentinian’s time condemned by the church.
