biggest elden ring misconception I keep seeing repeated is that people assume that in-universe characters know Ranni is deadā¦ but the Lands Between as a whole doesnāt know what happened to her; to everyone not in her inner circle, she simply vanished without a trace!
Gideon and Rogier talk about her as if sheās not dead, but missing:
"There are four more demigods yet to be located. [ā¦] Lunar Princess Ranni, daughter to Rennala. [ā¦] Ranni is said to have cast aside her Great Rune, so here at the Hold, we seek the whereabouts of the remaining three shardbearers.ā (Gideon)
āI have some idea of Ranni's potential whereabouts. There's a manor to the north of the Academy of Raya Lucaria. It is the familial home of the Carian royals from whom Ranni descends. There's been talk of the old royals' vassals gathering there in recent years. Ranni's whereabouts since the Shattering are a well-kept secret. She hasn't been seen even once. But I suspect she might have returned to the manor in which she was born...ā (Rogier)
when people speak of the Night of the Black Knives, the only āmajorā death of a demigod ever referred to is Godwynās, the āfirst of the demigods to die.ā Ranni is a major demigod and empyrean, if it were assumed she had also been murdered, why does no one ever mention her (extremely significant!) loss once in any of the many references to the Night of the Black Knives? because no one knows what happened to her!
and if you think about it, there isnāt a reason why people would assume Ranni was dead, because no one would have ever found her bodyā¦ the ritual that slew her body, kept a closely guarded secret, occurred at the top of the Divine Tower of Liurnia, which is only accessible via the upside-down Carian Study Hall, which is guarded by Preceptor Miriam:
āO Celestial Globe, transmit to prosperity. The wisdom of the moon and stars. And obscure, forever, the transgressions of the princess.ā (Carian Study Hall spirit)
who could have found out, but us, who Ranni gives the Inverted Statue to? the only loose end I can think of is Alecto, the Black Knife ringleader and Ranniās direct accompliceā¦ who is currently imprisoned in an evergaol on Ranniās turf, the Moonlight Altar.
so who DOES know the truth about Ranniās ādeath?ā
- Ranniās retainers: Blaidd, Iji, the Carian Preceptors (Seluvis and Miriam), her sworn Carian knights (we only see one at Caria Manor, whoās a ghostā¦ sad!), her servants/sworn nobles (probably Pidia, and we just have that ghost guy in the Study Hallā¦ sad!)
- Rykard, most likely: he at the very least knew she was plotting something using the rune of death, and assisted in her plans
- Alecto, possibly: as the ringleader, Ranni probably entrusted her to carry out Godwynās assassination at a precise time to match her own death, so itās possible she knew Ranniās planā¦ and it could also be why Ranni imprisoned her in an evergaol, to silence her. Iām gonna guess the other assassins werenāt made aware of Ranniās plans, since many of them escaped and are currently running around the Lands Between
- Rennala, possibly: I can see Ranni telling her mother of her plans due to their close bondā¦ but Iām not sure Rennala would have even been lucid enough to know what her daughter was saying
- that random Godskin Noble on the Divine Tower bridge I guessā¦ either these guys can sense traces of the rune of death like bloodhounds, or he was actually allied with Ranni, similar to how the Godskin in the Temple of Eiglay might be allied with Rykard?
- EDIT: Sellen almost certainly knows because she was colluding with Seluvis, and we can ask her for advice regarding Ranniās fate
- Rogier finds out, with our help!
