Léontine Lisant (1909). Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Oil on canvas.
A beautiful example of Renoir’s late portraiture, the work depicts Léontine who came to work for the Renoir family shortly after the birth of the artist’s youngest son Claude in 1900. Showing Léontine absorbed in her reading, seemingly unaware of being observed, Renoir has nevertheless painted a subtly provocative portrait, exposing the woman’s sensuality, the beauty of her facial features and of her body that so fully and confidently dominates the composition.

“I spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”
