Would Kel'Thuzad ever turn against Arthas' for Arthas' own good, and what would that sort of situation look like?

pre-wrath, I don’t think he would have ever considered it! Post-Wrath, it would still take a lot, and it would likely be because Arthas was possessed or otherwise in the grip of some obsession or something that was actively detrimental to himself.

I think the major thing is that if he turned against Arthas he would treat it like a mercy kill. That means no bringing anyone else into it or making alliances or treating it as like a raid boss situation - it’s just him and Arthas and a 1v1 duel on Icecrown or something and whatever happens happens, just a gruelling knock-down fight to the death.

tl;dr you know that line in heroes of the storm when he kills an Arthas on the other team? Yeah it’s like that.

Really mostly depends on where his time point is; in Dalaran he’d just want to get accredited/acknowledged and spend his time as a teacher. As Arthas’ second in command, he genuinely would be happy helping to keep Azeroth in the grip of an undead apocalypse.

Post-Wrath canon, he, uh, kind of wants to stop existing. He’s just tired and doesn’t see any real change happening to him that he can be content with a life that by necessity would require him to probably be by himself.

In the timelines where he does resurrect Arthas post-Wrath, he’s similarly happy to stay by Arthas’ side, though he’s not super into the whole ‘take over the world’ thing as much but IS more into the ‘let’s destroy things for funsies’ part. Cooled on the first due to ‘we tried that and got our shit punched in and i’m not going to climb that whole mountain again if it means the same thing is going to happen, that would be a waste of time’, but WAY more enthusiastic about the second because you know what WAS successful? Murdering our way up and down Azeroth! It was awesome!

I honestly think he’s used to things being taken from him without consent, or at least without him feeling he has much power in the matter, so I think he’s just...used to letting things go. He’ll be upset or angry or annoyed about it, but in some ways he’ll rationalise it as a tactical withdrawal or something he can afford to lose, so he shouldn’t be ~emotional~ about it.

So he’s actually surprisingly not very possessive, but it’s sort of because it’s a learned behaviour; no matter how tightly he holds onto something, it’s not going to matter, so why bother to get upset when it’s ripped from his grasp in some way?

Kel values other people mostly by usefulness (or says he does). More accurately I think he values them by skill and by the hidden variable of how much fun it is to poke them/how much they tickle his humor and entertain him. Hardworking people (at least in aspects he’s interested in) will gain his respect, people who he finds funny will please him in a more abstract way, and those who combine both are people he’d probably like to stick around in some way.

I think he’s tried having associates and friends as kind of a charismatic socialite and he’s not super into it because What Did They Do For Him, Really. He does actually like having friends though, provided they meet his standards and aren’t horribly boring to talk to (in his definitely humble and unbiased opinion).

I don’t think Kel is a very easy person to love, mostly because he’s so withdrawn and a bit isolated. He’s not necessarily inattentive but his idea of romantic gestures is very subtle and subdued; I think he’s the type of person where if he loves someone he’ll show it by just continuing to exist around them really hard. For anyone who’s more used to more outspoken forms of communication in that regard, it’s a difficult thing to get over. (Similarly he doesn’t really...see the point in making big gestures unless it’s for something really special and won’t ‘make the effort’ if he’s comfortable enough so it can lead to clashing.) He takes time to get adjusted to and, aptly, takes time to really defrost and want to reach out and compromise with the other person.

Depending on the person, he’s either amused/annoyed /mad/genuinely upset (rare). Betrayal can be a troublesome setback he can eventually work around, to a completely expected variable he’s pretending not to notice, to “oh that punched me in the feelings i strenuously deny i have”.

What he feels is an appropriate punishment generally comes first, then reflection on it later.
