âThe sky is falling.â A mumble beneath his breath as he sidled up to the back of the crowd, an odd duck in a gaggle of swans, all with expectant eyes turned upward. Heâd not thought to come - despite the Creatorâs insistence, Adam had always favored the solitude of his home to the forced companionship of town-wide events such as this one; were it possible, he would still be at home, dressed in a robe, sitting by a fire, and drinking wine that he very much would not share with anyone. But it was not possible, it seemed; two very persuasive presences - one purposeful, and one inadvertent - had convinced him to be here to watch the sky fall.Â
But he certainly didnât have to look cheery about it - and he certainly didnât.Â
He glanced over one shoulder, then the other, and ventured another step toward the crowd. In the interest of participation, he craned his neck upward, eyes darting from flickering light to flickering light - they all looked rather normal, rather usual, but of course Adam was in no place to question the powers that be. And he certainly was not like to make a fuss about his presence there; the more easily he faded into the background, the more easily he escaped the seemingly necessary droning of social interaction, the better. But that seemed inescapable.Â
Adam blinked once. Twice. The stars looked the same. âThe sky is falling⊠slowly.â
Since he had come to Devilâs Ridge, Felix had seen an array of emotions from just about everyone. Some were excited, bouncing for joy or drinking themselves into oblivion. Maybe they knew some secret about watching the sky fall while intoxicated that Felix didnât know. Some seemed unsure, other just wanted to party, some looked like they were dying of anticipation. And then there were the few that seemed like they would rather be just about anywhere else.
Felix liked to put himself into that category. Heâd unwillingly admit that it would likely change once the action began and Felix found himself sucked into the sight of the sky falling, but for now heâd simply grumble on. The magic of the creator was bringing people together, all under one sky in one moment. Oh, curious.
Felixâs attention shifted to someone near him, the words making the man bark out a laugh. âDonât get too excited there, dude. Whatâs that bullshit stupid people say...patience is a virtue.â He shrugged his shoulder, never one for patience. It was actually one of his faults.
