laughter  flutters ,   airy  and  light  along  the  static  of  where  dust  would  fall  ;   you’re  so  funny ,   dude ,   he  remembers  to  relay .

     it’s  been  a  long  time  since  any  of  them  have  really  had  to  familiarize  themselves  with  these  halls .    he’d  held  the  idea  in  his  head  that  introducing  shinsou  to  the  dorms  would  be  a  lot  like  giving  the  new  kid  a  tour  of  the  school ,   proud  to  be  hand - picked  by  the  teacher  to  do  so  and  showing  up  extra  early  in  his  best  slacks   —   all  pressed  and  gleaming  with  a  smile  that  rounds  up  to  a  million  yen .    

instead ,   he’s  left  hardly  the  picture  of  such  responsibility  in  too  big  flannel ,   soft  from  a  lifetime  of  washes ,   and  too  small  shorts ,   frayed  and  torn  beneath  the  open  shirt  drooping  past  his  thighs .    grin  crooked  and  lazy ,   as  secondhand  as  the  rest  of  him .    sleeves  swallowing  the  hands  that  hike  shinsou’s  bag  further  up  his  shoulder .

and  what  an  oddity  that  tall  boy  has  turned  out  to  be ,   really .    how  shiny ,   how  brand  new ,   mint   ;   not  much  by  appearance  or  sparkling  personality ,   but  by  what’s  managed  to  skirt  past  his  knowledge  this  past  year ,   attendance  at  the  same  school  apparently  not  enough  reason  for  either  of  them  to  know  much  of  each  other  at  all .    they  really  did  their  damnedest  to  keep  the  classes  divorced  along  appointed  importance ,   didn’t  they ?    

denki’s  left  half - surprised  by  the  plainness  of  the  question .

     ❛   oh ,   uhhhhh …   yeah ,   ❜      he  blinks ,   realization  dawning  that  shinsou  would  have  no  way  of  knowing  about  his  situation    —   and  vice  versa .    he  blinks  to  the  stairs  they  ascend .      ❛   my  uh ,   my  mom  works  a  lot ,   so  it’s  not  really  like  i’m  missin’  much  back  home  when  break  comes  around .    plus  i  was  too  lazy  to  pack ,   soooooo  …   ❜

arms  swing  out ,   a  grand  gesture  to  the  impossibly  spacious  housing  around  them  with  a  princely  grin  to  boot .     ❛   my  kingdom  awaits .   ❜ 

it’d  been  a  lonely  month .

pretty  sound,  shinsou  catalogs.  the  sound  dust  would  make  when  it  catches  the  light,  if  dust  made  sounds.  he  thinks  about  his  voice  capture  device  and  how  it  would  be  incapable  of  making  a  believable  replication.  then  he  thinks  his  thoughts  should  shut  the  hell  up  about  it.

❛   you  stayed ?  the  whole  break ?   ❜   it  sounds  a  terrible  lot  like  loneliness,  even  with  the evident  comfort  that  denki  seems  to  find  here.  the  place  is  big  and  not  having  seen  it  full  up  with  other  people  shinsou  still  can’t  imagine  how  strange  the  lack  of  them  must  be.  the  difference  between  waking  up  to  an  empty  house,  parents  already  gone  to  work,  verses  waking  up  while  everyone  is  still  sleeping.  still,  the  dorm  feels  lived  in,  lit  up  by  the  presence  of  the  only  person  in  it  -  he  doesn’t  count,  presently -  the  live - wire,  really,  as  if  it  truly  does  call  denki  its  king.  charming’s  smile  to  boot.

      ❛   sorry  for  the  intrusion,  then,   ❜   he  offers,  the  standard  treatment  for  being  aloud  into  someone  else’s  home.

       walking  behind  him,  into  the  halls  of  his  towered,  cinder - block  kingdom,  shinsou  wonders  if  he’ll  ever  feel  at  home  within  it  instead  of  a  visitor  granted  temporary  entrance.  he  hopes  that  class  doesn’t  follow  the  same  intruding  sensation.

hungry  eyes  take  in  all they  can  in  passing  through  the  common  areas,  the  tall  windows;  takes  in,  too, details  of  his  guide  but  knows  less  to  do  with  the  latter.  catalogs  the  information  like  everything  else.

              THE SUN PEAKS TREE TOPS, BATHES THE WORLD IN LIGHT,    And you find yourself lost in it’s rays, like a cat drawn to the subtle warmth of existing under it’s beams.    MORNINGS WERE NEVER YOUR FRIEND, you’ve watched more sunrises then you can count, but never for good reason.   Until him.  Training Shinsou gave your schedule structure, routine. Something it was painfully lacking.

Taking a protege was like opening a long feared chapter in the novella of your life, WHAT IF YOU FUCKED THIS UP? He looked up to you, in the curve of his tired eyes and the slump of shoulders he’s self constructed to hold the world, you catch glimmers of your reflection. Like memories you’d forgotten, mixed with the same smile and determination as a name that has long since sat too heavy in your mouth.    You’d be proud of him Shirakumo.    Though you can’t live forever in these moments, reminiscing on a PEACE in your life you can partly attribute to the boy who meets you half way, a cup of coffee in hand, a mutual agreement of perpetual exhaustion lingering between you.

             YOU’D LONG FORWENT FORMALITIES.     It’s been a year. refining skill and honing talent to it’s finest points. He was more then promising, hard work turning once fumbling fists to a danger that keeps you on your toes. HE DOESN’T NEED YOU ANYMORE. He hasn’t for a while. And with the turn of the upcoming semester, he’ll be a jewel among your class. A beacon to gives your other students a RUN FOR THEIR DAMN MONEY.

His voice pulls you out of the acrid taste of coffee, though you’re glad not to lower that cup yet, the rim of it hiding the slight upturn of your lips, concealing the fondness for his honesty. OF COURSE HE’S EXCITED. How long has he waited– FOUGHT for this chance?

There’s something distinctly unique in your eyes as your posture turns to face him, an emotion rarely displayed so openly, reserved for the hard won successes.  PRIDE.  And it lives behind the deep red of your eyes.

           “ It’s been a long time coming.     You worked hard for it, you’re allowed to be nervous and excited about it.

                          I trained you better then to let a loss in sleep slow you down.”

There’s a pause, words chewed through carefully, your mind still finding it’s bearings through the long nights of preparing for the new semester. He may be excited, but you have your work cut out for you… “ Have you thought of something to do in celebration yet? ”

              TRUE  AND  FAIR  ON  BOTH  ACCOUNTS,  what  aizawa  says.  he  has  clawed  tooth,  claw,  exhausted  to  become  a  weapon  of  justice.  the  very  fact  that  he  can  fight  at  all  is  sleeplessness  overcome.

it  wouldn’t  have  been  possible  without  the  faith  instilled  in  him  that  he  was  worthy  to  become  anything.  having  a  dream  is  one  thing.  turning  it  into  reality  has  been  something  totally  other.  not  a  thousand  morning  coffees  could  amount  to  the  gratitude  he  houses.  guidance  does  not,  least  to  him,  feel  outgrown  —  nor  unneeded  —  at  this  point.  shinsou  looks  in  the  mirror  and  sees  less  how  far  he’s  come  and  more  how  much  further  he  has  to  go.  it’s  a  sensation  he  might  never  grow  out  of.

the  praise,  anyway,  revs  quicker  than  the  coffee  does.  he  has  worked  hard,  playing  a  constant  game  of  catch  up  to  the  hero  course  classes.  lion,  mane  and  battle - fierceness  alike,  he  hungers  for  second  year  to  begin.  if  time  were  a  physical  thing  he  might  just  hunt  it  down  to  make  it  move  quicker  forward.

            he  drains  another  sip  of  coffee  instead,  itching  now  to  get  a  start  on  the  training  routine.  stretches,  first,  for  the  sake  of  safety. “ celebration, ”  shinsou  repeats  with  the  clear  inflection  that  he  has  not  once  considered  it,  a  leg  lifted  behind  his  back  with  empty  hand.  multi - taking.

“ to  be  honest, ”  as  if  he  hasn’t  already  been,  “  i  haven’t  really  thought  about  that  kind  of  thing...  ?  it  doesn’t  seem  ...  finite  enough,  if  that  makes  sense? ”  he  hides  embarassment  with  another  swig,  finishing  the  coffee  and  switching  legs.  “ maybe  i’m  just  in  a  state  of  suspended  disbelief  or  something ? ” it  doesn’t  seem  real  yet,  that’s  for  sure.  the  hunger,  the  sleepless  excitement,  it  all  lends  itself  to  the  fear  that  he  might  wake  up  one  morning  and  find  it  all  a  dream.

            “ don’t  get  me  wrong,  i  know  it’s  an  accomplishment  just  to  be  accepted  into  the  course...  but  it  seems  like  celebrating  is  the  sort  of  thing  i  ought  to  save,  you  know?”  as  if  there  is  a  limit  on  such  things  as  happiness;  like  birthday  wishes  or  stamina.  slowly  renewing  resources.  if  he  uses  it  all  up  there  won’t  be  any  left  for  when  he  really  needs  it.  “  for  when  i  finally  pass  the  provisional  license  exam. ”

            when  there’s  proof  is  what  he  means;  some  sort  of  evidence  passed  verbal  admission  that  he’s  truly  gotten  closer  to  his  goal,  to  closing  the  gap  between  general  studies  shinsou  and  hero  in  training  shinsou.

     april ,   like  every  month  of  the  past  year ,   hit  straight  outta  left  field .    denki  had  barely  even  blinked  before  the  gap  between  standing  on  the  front  lines  of  a  long  battle  and  picking  up  his  second  year  uniform  was  effectively  bridged ,   where  everyone  had  more  or  less  moved  on  and  he’d  only  just  now  noticed  the  way  his  hair  was  beginning  to  inch  past  his  neck .    he’d  pulled  it  out  from  under  the  collar  of  his  new  blazer ,   looked  into  the  mirror ,   and  barely  recognized  himself .

classes  had  given  their  two - day  notice  to  ruin  his  life  once  more .    further  a  threat  to  his  current  abomination  of  a  sleep  schedule ,   he’s  presently  running  on  his  twenty - eighth  hour  without  sleep  in  efforts  to  correct  it   ;   meaning  there’s  plenty  of  time  to  haunt  the  windows ,   skulk  the  hallways ,   light  up  when  a  familiar  shape  makes  itself  known  in  one .

        ❛   SHINSOU !   ❜      and  featherfoot  sticks  the  landing ,   sliding  down  the  rail  of  the  stairway  where  legs  couldn’t  possibly  carry  him  there  fast  enough   —   poised  n’  perfect .      ❛   i  can’t  believe  you’re  finally  here ,   dude !    feels  like  i  been  waitin’  forever !    how  you  doin’ ?!    you  excited ?    oo ,   lookit  all  your  bags   —   need  a  lil  muscle ?    here !   ❜    

perceiving  the  slight  droop  of  carry - ons  to  be  the  mere  product  of  their  accumulated  weight ,   this  little  king  of  attempting  to  carry  all  the  plastic  chairs  by  himself  in  fourth  grade  reaches  to  help ,   plucking  a  bag  for  himself  to  relieve  shinsou  of  one  less  burden .      ❛   c’mon ,   let’s  getcha  goin’ !    i  already  know  where  your  nameplate  is !   ❜    

kaminari  lands  before  him  a  graceful  strike  of  lightning  in  itself.  a  stuck  landing,  seemingly  practiced  in  its  perfection.  shinsou  has  a  sneaking  suspicion  that  it  might  be  happenstance.  for  all  he  appears  the  same  by  nature,  he  looks  different.  hair  longer,  face  older,  eyes  tired.  still  open,  still  kind.  excited  to  see  him.  shinsou  is  surprised  to  find  that  he  believes  it.  further,  to  find  that  it  is  a  bit  more  mutual  than  anticipated.  it  is  suspected  that  if  it  were  bakugou  he’d  run  into  he’d  feel  differently.

❛   wait  no  more  for  i  am  here,  ❜   shinsou's  voice  rests  comfortably  deadpan  as  he  makes  the  joke,  but  eyes  betray  him  as  they  often  do.  windows  to  the  soul,  they  say.   ❛   excited  is  a  word  for  it,  yeah  —   ❜   he’s  reminded  that  the  blur  of  three  —  or  was  it  four?  five? —  months  separate  themselves  into  a  strange  distance.  everyone  living  their  own  lives,  fighting  their  own  steps  forward.

            every  centimeter  gained,  any  inch  shinsou  feels  closer  to  closing  the  gaps  between  his  grasp  and  the  coattails  of  his  hero - course  peers,  experience  splits  a  trench  between  them.  he’s  seen  it,  second - hand  —  plastered  all  over  the  news.  long  after  usj.  the  ambush.  kamino.  the  infiltration.  he'd  be  hard - pressed  to  say  it  feels  like  missing  out  because  that’s  not  it,  not  really.

            he’d  have  liked  to  help  is  all;  to  be  useful  instead  of  having  to  play  catch  up  to  train,  study,  rinse,  repeat,  earn  a  provisional  license,  eat,  sleep.

            the  last  he's  still  working  on.  kaminari,  too,  it  seems.

there  is  a  sore,  sweet  sense  of  relief  that  settles  across  his  weighted  shoulders  at  the  loss  of  his  meager  personal  belongings  —  burden  borrowed  by  eyes  tired  enough  to  mirror  the  half  moons  shinsou  regularly  owns.  too,  maybe,  a  softer  sense  of  relief  that  their  commonalities  keep  piling  up.   ❛  thank  you  —  you  been  here  long?  ❜

            he  stands  by  it,  what  he’d  say  before:  he  isn’t  here  to  make  friends.  now,  following  behind  kaminari’s  lead,  he  allows  for  a  gentle  amendment  to  the  sentiment:  he  isn’t  here  to  make  friends  but  maybe  he  wouldn’t  mind  so  much  if  it  happened.

tentative  knock  falls  three  times  upon  the  door  frame  to  indicate  his  arrival.  shinsou  hovers  just  outside  the  room  until  invited  inside  anyway,  respect  dutifully  ingrained.  

                 sore  muscles  still  ache  after  the  day’s  make - shift  entrance  exam.  shinsou  reels  from  it,  the  adrenaline  high  of  next  year  keeps  the  serotonin  running  pretty  evenly.  surreal,  it  briefly  incites  a  small  anxiety  that  the  reason  for  this  meeting  is  to  retract  that  privileged  entirely.  had  they  all  discussed  his  performance  and  decided  it  had  been  lacking  after all?  that  he  was  too  far  behind  to  catch  up  to  the  hero  courses?  

a  gentle  clear  of  his  throat  and  a  voice  made  to  run  steady  under  pressure,  “ you  asked  to  see  me,  aizawa - sensei? ”

a  lost  boy  stands  at  the  bottom  of  a  staircase.  packed  bags  rest  at  his  sides,  hovering  between  shoulder  and  floor  as  if  to  put  them  down  would  violate  some  rule.  are  these  dorm  floors  made  of  lava ?  who’s  to  say,  really.  shinsou  wouldn’t  know.  he’s  new  here.  there  are  so  many  windows  he  thinks  the  sun  might  fall  through  them  in  the  morning  and  light  the  whole  place  on  fire.

heard  first,  instead  of  seen;  soft  footfalls  on  a  flight  of  stairs  overhead.  upon  glancing upward  comes  heady  realization  of  who  else  will  occupy  these  dorms.  it  almost  amuses  him.  the  emotion  doesn’t  quiet  reach  his  face  —  not  so  much  an  active  attempt  to  hide  it  but  more  so  —  it  appears  muted  on  the  surface  of  his  features.  tired  eyes  do  soften,  if  just,  at  the  familiar  face.  how  easy  it  had  been  to  forget  he  didn’t  intend  to  make  friends.  

“  don’t  suppose  you  know  where  my  room  is  ?  ”

true  to  form,  mornings  carry  the  scent  of  pine  and  espresso.  the  former  from  the  product  keeping  purple  locks  from  slipping  into  heavy - lidded  eyes,  the  latter  wafting  from  hand - held  paper  cups.  dark  half  moons  echo  previous  circles,  darker  for  the  early  hour.  

shinsou  lifts  one  the  beverage  already  claimed  for  himself  and  drains  a  good  portion  of  it.  the  other  is  an  offering  —  a  common  one  —  for  his  mentor.  it  is  extended  upon  arrival  without  preamble  and  in  lieu  of  a  good  morning.  mornings  are  rarely  good  enough  for  the  standard  greeting  anyway.  shinsou  would  wager  a  bet  that  they  have  a  common  understanding  on  that  matter.

tired  limbs  plead  for  a  moment  of  rest  before  he  digs  into  the  usual  stretches  —  thus  he  parks  himself  on  the  bench  to  finish  breakfast.  aware  that  it  might  seem  he’s  lost  his  spark  of  initiative,  shinsou  fills  in  the  lazy  start  with  a  slice  of  good  ol’  honesty,  “ you  know  it’s  funny...  since  we  started  training  my  insomnia  has  taken  a  backseat  to  much  needed  sleep  but  i’ve  been  so  nervous  —  excited? ...  both,  maybe,  anyway  —  lately...  now  that  second  year’s  coming  up...  that  it’s  been  hard  to  get  to  sleep. ”  there’s  an  edge  of  mirth  to  the  way  shinsou  stumbles  over  the  explanation,  a  breath  almost  mimics  a  laugh  at  the  end  of  it.

the  next  inhale  is  almost  a  sigh,  stealing  himself  for  the  day  still  to  come.  “ that’s  not  an  excuse, ”  he  is  suddenly  quick  to  add,  gaze  cutting  to  aizawa  quickly  to  make  sure  it’s  understood.  “  i'll  still  be  in  top  form  -  just  as  soon  as  the  coffee’s  finished. ”

  seems  common  subject  matters  have  slipped  through  more  than  a  few  cracks  when  left  to  memory’s  recall.  shinsou  has  had  the  usual  crushes,  sure.  been  someone’s  crush,  though?  not  that  he’s  ever  been  made  aware  of.  sheepish  hand  scrubs  over  the  back  of  his  neck,  tell - tale  that  denki  may  in  fact  be  the  only  one  that  has  painted  him  that  particular  shade  of  complement.  he  doesn’t  know  what  to  do  with  it.

❛  it’s  that  common...  for  people  to  ask  each  other  out ?  i  thought  it  was  only  in  hollywood  films...  that  people  really  did  that  stuff.  ❜  brows  are  spared  the  furrow,  if  only  for  the  avoidance  of  gaze.  ❛  you  think  sleep  deprivation  is  handsome ?  ❜
