Location: The local farm

In module 11 we learned about sustainability when it comes to mass farming. With this, we covered how many of each resource (food, grass, water, land, etc.) is needed to raise chickens, cattle, chicken, or pork. Did you know it takes approximately 1,800 gallons of water to produce just one pound of pork Yes, it’s true. Along with this comes the 16 pounds of grass needed to create this 1 pound of beef. That’s why I’m vegan and eat tofu...just kidding. Just like cattle and poultry, soy also takes up many resources. Soy farming takes up a lot of water. One gallon of soy milk on its own takes 208 gallons of water. I had no idea the amount of climate damage mass/commercial farming had on our planet.

LEGO POST 4

Location: Stomach

So far, my favorite thing I have learned about in my science class has to be the digestive system. Who knew so many things are behind something so simple. The digestive system has several functions, the main one being that it breaks food down into nutrients, and breaking down particles to make them easier to digest. Food sits in your stomach for 4 hours, and during this time, it mixes with the stomach acid. Did you know there’s a name for the fluid that comes from your food and stomach acid mixing together? It’s called chyme! Gross. Anyways, the stomach acid is super powerful. So powerful infact, that our bodies produce mucus to line our stomach wall to protect itself from its own acid! The two intestines that our food travels through are called the large intestine, and the small intestine. Surprisingly, the small intestine is actually the longest one! It stretches out to about 20 feet long.

Lego Post 3: DNA!

Something very interesting that I learned in science class was our lesson on DNA and how it works. My DNA consists of porcelain and paint, but it was cool to see how DNA works and all of its details. I enjoyed reading about the monster story, and the characters matt and matilda. They both have different colored spots, and their mom explains to them why that is. Using only four elements, they made a numerous amount of different color combinations, just like DNA works. DNA is created out of 4 “letters” which are G.T.C.A. Millions of different combinations are made out of only these 4 letters/ elements, which is why we all look different. Another thing I found interesting was how mutations work. This occurs when the gene pattern in a strand of DNA is incorrect. This happens when the letter/ element is different from the pattern, if it is repeated, or missing. Over all, I thought this was a fun lesson that gave me a lot of insight on dna and all of its functions.

Did you know that specific genes can be passed on to only one sibling?

Yes, it is true. The way DNA works, if you have 2 siblings, one can get a gene that comes from the dad specifically, while the other sibling can get a specific gene from the mom. An example of this would be in the mom has blue eyes and the dad has brown eyes. One child will get blue eyes, and the other will get brown eyes.

Hi everyone! 

For today's post I will be talking about our really fun lesson about the moon. If you look up at the sky, you will see a different moon phase pretty often. But why is this? Have you ever wondered about why the moon always looks different? I know I have, I remember when I first saw the moon after leaving the antique shop. This lesson and VISA went into depth about how and why the moon goes into different phases. It was by far one of my favorite lessons, because it gave me so much insight on something so close to our planet, which I thought was very cool. 

There are several different reasons the moon changes phases. First of all, lets cover the different phases. The first phase is the new moon, where none of the moon is lit up..where did the moon go? Don’t worry, the moon isn’t gone we’ll see it in its next phase! After a full moon, then comes a waxing crescent moon, which has a small sliver lit up on the right side, then we go into first quarter moon where the right half is lit up. Our next phase is the waxing gibbous, where about 75% of the moon is lit up, and then comes a full moon! As seen in my photo above, I’m in front of the full moon! The last three stages are the waning gibbous, the third quarter, and the waning crescent. Pretty cool right? My favorite part of this lesson was also learning how the moon can have a huge impact on the earths water, specifically the tides!

For our class lesson about two weeks ago, we learned about dinosaurs . We specifically covered how they are classified, how we can tell how they looked, what they ate, etc. Another key component of the lessons was learning about fossils and how they form. This was one of my favorite science topics we have covered so far because I think dinosaurs are really interesting, and we also had a fun VISA where we named our own dinosaurs. 

I learned so much about this giant creatures that used to roam the planet. One of the coolest things I learned was how fossils are formed and how they have managed to stay intact underground for millions and millions of years. This method I will mention is the most common.There are a few steps as to how fossils are formed. The first step being that the dinosaur obviously has to die first and decompose. After that, with a lot of time sediment layers start build up and press down on the dinosaurs remains (bones or shells). Once the remains are covered and pressed down in sediment, minerals fill in the little spaces in the bones or shells. These minerals end up producing fossils.
