Things to keep an eye on.
In a little publicized initiative, the Biden administration is seeking to tackle the ‘junk fees’ hitting Americans when they can’t afford it
FDA aims to improve access to affordable hearing aids for millions of Americans with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment.
More info on both of these things.
Remember to vote in the mid-terms! If Republicans take back control of Congress, moves like these will be increasingly difficult to achieve.
I sure wish Democrats were willing to get shit done more than once every two years coincidentally right before elections
What Has Biden Done? A lot of good. A blog dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments of the 46th President of the United States and his
(Just because you weren't paying attention doesn't mean it didn't happen)
Hello and Happy New Year, everyone!! Here is (part of) my stimtoy collection as of the end of 2021!!! I'm very proud of all of it, especially the Tangles that are harder to find. Hopefully my collection will grow to be even larger in 2022. If anyone would like to see anything specific more, just send an ask :]
Big posts can be kind of overwhelming, so I'll be uploading the rest of my Thinking Putty collection separately.
being autistic makes me the sensory overlord
I think the obsession with having been “born this way” largely stems from the idea that you need to be “innocent” to be guiltless.
If something is weird then you need to have no control over it, otherwise it would be mandatory to fix it. If I said that I had control over my stimming and could stop it at any time, people would request I do so. Not for my comfort but for theirs. If I said that I had control over my gender and could be something binary or maybe even cis, people would request I do so. If I said that I have control over my sexuality and could make myself heterosexual, people would request I do so. If I said I could control my attraction and could make myself monogamous, people would request I do so. If I said that I could control my disability and could choose to stop a flair up in its tracks, people would request I do so. They would never ask out of the goodness of their hearts, they would always be asking because I was annoying, concerning, distracting, or inconveniencing them.
Diversity is sometimes only tolerated if you have no control. If you have control, rules will be made to stop it. Hair will be straightened, clothes will be standardized, languages will be shushed, interests will be squashed, weight will be lost, and so on and so on and so on. Proving that we were born this way replaces the more obvious, that we’re okay this way. I don’t need to be a helpless victim of my differences to be forgiven for them. My differences aren’t crimes.
Such an important point, and something that’s very relevant to the ace and aro communities. You don’t have to be ace or aro because you were born that way - these labels are open to anyone that identifies with them for any reason, at any time of your life. You are just as valid if you once identified differently, and you are just as welcome in this community.
This is my problem with “You shouldn’t make fun of people for being ‘cringey’ or weird or having strange interests, because they might be autistic.” Yes, they might be. And you know what? It’s not relevant. If they’re a neurotypical person who likes *insert interest deemed Cringey here*, you’re still behaving badly and you should feel bad about yourself.
You’re not the hero here. You’re not the arbiter of who’s allowed to exist and in what ways. If you torment people over differences that are not harming you - being annoying is not “harm” - you’re an asshole.
HI SO SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT I'M EXCITED. THERE'S A WORD FOR THE THING WHERE YOU'RE HANGING OUT BUT DOING YOUR OWN STUFF, IT'S CALLED PARALLEL PLAY???? IT'S A THING!!
the autistic urge to complain about innacurate solar system models
Autism moms will legit post non-consensual videos of their kids just stimming for thousands to see and be like "wow. Amazing. I'll never be able to understand them. Truly a genius. I wish I'll be able to understand them one day. We know SO LITTLE about autism."
Linda, it's a few Google searches away babe. Learn to communicate to your child on THEIR terms it's 100% possible.
Try and find autistic adults to whom you can ask questions. But please don't infantilize them and force em to act "normal", whatever that means. Don't tell them they're geniuses and put them on a pedestal either. Both will pressure them to perform for others and that's plain unhealthy. They have enough to worry about already.
Give autistic kids tools to navigate the world better and to accept themselves. If they're able to take care of themselves, teach them how. That's what they ACTUALLY need.
Stop demonizing & trying to "fix" the parts of autism you don't understand because of your limited world view. Offer *support* not shame/illusions of grandeur.
Searched autism on tiktok and I REALLY should not have done that!!!
Sometimes I hyperfocus so hard on something, I forget I’m a person until someone interacts with me. I feel like some wild animal seeing a human being for the first time. I’m like “oh yeah I’m supposed to speak and stuff”
Me: *doing something for hours on end without stopping*
Someone: Hey, are you there? I was just wondering if you’d like to-
Me:
For every single person in the notes going “yeah” or “same” or something like that…
I never knew you were autistic
LEAVE ME ALOOONE!!!!!
Oh my GOOOOOOOD I've been attacked by this post jfc
I read this as "autistic potential" and 100% same exact emotion.
autism is not a disease you can catch, plus vaccines have nothing to do with brain development. I know people who believe vaccines cause autism and it hurts my feeling because its like they think autism is something “wrong” with me and its has to be caused by something like a vaccine.
Does this resonate with you?
I find it pretty accurate.
Big thanks to myautisticsoul for making this.
