The way so many Palestinian deaths lately are being branded as ‘martyrs’ feels extremely dehumanizing. The slogan of ‘Glory to our martyrs’ is appalling. People show pictures of civilian, and instead of saying they were killed, they say they were ‘martyred’.

In the context of today’s conflict, and of how Hamas uses the word ‘martyr’, it’s as if saying these people died voluntarily, like they chose to die for this cause.

But they didn’t. Those people didn’t choose to die. They didn’t want to die. No civilians on either side of this conflict want to die.

Hamas has been extremely open in their willingness to see their civilian population die, be ‘martyred’, for their bigger goal to get fully rid of Israel. This is the exact reason why Hamas has decided to attack on October 7th, when they knew full well that Israel would respond, and that Hamas could not win (because, let’s be real, Hamas cannot, realistically, win).

By saying that Palestinian civilians who are killed in this conflict were ‘martyred’, it is like saying that Hamas is right, and successful in making their own population into martyrs. And that’s bad! That’s so bad!

Palestinians aren’t martyrs, they’re people! People who didn’t want to die! People who are stuck in a horrible conflict, because the people in power do not care about them, see them as expendable, as tools for their own violent ends. Hamas triggered a war they knew they could not win, and now that they are losing, they are trying to paint the deaths of their people as martyrs to shift the blame, to avoid recognizing that they themselves put their civilians in harm’s way, to somehow paint their civilians’ deaths as something positive.

This is unacceptable; we cannot glorify the deaths of civilians in a military conflict, because that could somehow mean those deaths are justified, useful, and that can never be the case. All deaths should be mourned, because all deaths are a tragedy. But death cannot be glorified, because it is a net negative. No one wins.

controversial take many of you will foam at the mouth about but look. the way westerns support palestine feels incredibly ingenuine at times.

the way you feel the need to fetishise and/or appropriate their culture to want to protect them. the way you feel the need to lie about things to prove they are worthy of life (they are regardless of literally anything). the way you simp for hamas like wtf is that to show you support a free palestine.

stop romanticising tragedy. a father grabbing his daughter out of the rubble and comforting her is a horrible trauma they’ll both have to live with forever. it isn’t worse because the language he used is poetic. it isn’t more deserving of sympathy because it’s beautiful. war and death is not beautiful. stop trying to make it as such.

from an outside perspective it doesn’t seem like any of you actually care about palestinians. it looks like they’re your little dolls you get to play with and talk about and cheer for while actively ignoring the situation they’re actually in. hamas has done awful things to them including now denying them food and medicine. some of them want to live in israel and not palestine. some of them want to leave gaza and go far away. some of them want to stay in gaza and never leave. palestinians are, crazily, actual real life people. not all of them want the same thing and not all of them want hamas or any kind of violence to control them. some of them are thankful for the soldiers and some of them would be honoured to kill a soldier. stop generalising a whole people because you want to protect them. that’s still erasing their humanity.

people deserve protection regardless of how cool their culture is. regardless of how good their food is. regardless of their poetry. people deserve not to die because they deserve not to die. and that is enough. and even people who are wrong and violent don’t deserve to die. so it’s actually okay to talk about the corruption in unwra, it’s factual. it’s actually okay to talk about the crimes hamas has committed, it’s factual. it’s actually okay to talk about the extreme antisemitism and bloodlust some display, it is factual.

the facts don’t take away from palestinians right to live safely—rights don’t work that way. but ignoring half the truth won’t save them, either. you can see the whole truth and still believe they are worthy of freedom. unless.. you don’t actually believe in unconditional freedom? unless you believe only those who are absolved of sin get to live?

I don’t venture to that side of tumblr but occasionally I see those posts and the amount of notes is frightening. Not really much of a conspiracy theorist but have to wonder how much controlled astroturfing and even bot use goes on. The propaganda war has been insane and I don’t think tumblr is exempt from things like that just because it’s a smaller platform.
