What is Minimum?
Minimum is a feature-length film project, which will follow a day in the life of a range of different women working minimum wage and under-appreciated jobs in Aotearoa New Zealand. This non-fiction film will be shaped entirely by the stories of real women; either submitted anonymously or captured on camera in a filmed interview.
Minimum aims to show the reality of minimum-wage experiences, which are not entirely bleak – but certainly aren’t helped by demeaning managers, dismissive customers and income so meagre that it’s hard to survive on. This film is a way to raise awareness and to begin to make change.
The first part of this project will involve collecting stories from as many women as possible. This will allow us to identify key trends and to shape the focus of the film in a way that is truthful and meaningful for the women who are at its center.
Stories can be submitted anonymously via our online form. Between ten and twenty women will be invited to take part in a filmed interview in a studio setting. These interviews will be collected as a companion piece for the final film – and will provide a strong stand-alone glimpse into working women’s lives in Aotearoa.
68% of minimum wage workers in New Zealand are women.
Minimum will begin to tell our stories.
