there’s a sense of moral currency and performance in the way we are speaking about sobriety, celibacy, discipline, and restraint. it’s less about one’s relationship with desire or inner clarity and much more (lately anyway ive noticed) concerned with a performance of mastery or virtuous self it seems.

when things feel so fragmented, as they often do, we answer with an opposite extreme. trying to impose control, order, abstention. mistaking those responses with true devotion and compassion, or even change. still thinking on this and writing more.
