So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason weāre doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. Theyāre plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and theyāre missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until theyāre big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when theyāre able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we donāt have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who havenāt settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely donāt even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldnāt have been there otherwise.
Conservation is so fucken sick
This is a literal sexual harassment training video we had to complete

school uniform codes extending to what colours youāre allowed to dye your hair, and what piercings you can have and stuff is so crazy. you HAVE to go to school and youāre not even allowed to have pink hair or pierce your nose about it????
āoh itās to prepare you for the workplaceā okay. i donāt think any workplace should be dictating what you can and canāt do with your body either and i think itās strange to decide to teach children that their body is not their own
in 2026 i am wishing for all of us the energy of bilbo baggins, who was headhunted for an extremely well paid role he had no qualifications or experience for, blagged the interview, and within his first week found a magic ring that does the job for him

Snow Crash really might be one of the best novels ever written. the main character is named Hiro Protagonist he's a ronin pizza delivery driver with a katana and he helped invent the fictional torment nexus that real-life Mark Zuckerberg named his own soulless vr project after
oddly vrchat resembles the Snow Crash Metaverse far closer than Zuckerberg's Metaverse, from the nonrestrictive gameplay and diverse userbase to the fact that it wasn't invented by some Fortune 500 corporation. thus adding even more layers of baleful irony to the Zuck Metaverse, given the whole anti-corporate message of the book

Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which BarƧa players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
thereās a cultural obsession with labelling all female authors as unintelligent or otherwise only capable of accidentally stumbling into brief moments of genius in their works that we need to start pushing back against
āI was always bothered when people say, āI cry to your music, it sounds like a diary, it sounds so personal,āā Mitski says. āYes, it is personal. But thatās so gendered. Thereās no feeling of, āOh, maybe sheās a songwriter and she wrote this as a piece of art.āā

feel like it's related to the phenomenon mitski's discussing here - if women's art is only seen as unfiltered diaristic emotion then of course it can only ever be accidental genius, never created with intention and thought
