“d’you ever just get hit on by somebody that deserves a giant ‘REJECTED’ stamp right on their forehead? like damn...some people can’t take a hint to back the fuck off. it’s been one of those days, as you can clearly see.”
“ honestly, i’m baffled too. i don’t even know how my brain was still functioning at five in the a.m. but i guess it just went on hyperdrive or something. so star gates are basically portals that link us to other places in the matrix, or universe if you will. they’re literally scattered across the earth - theorists believe they’re usually under the guise of ancient ruins or sites, like rock formations or caves dating back hundreds of years ago that ancient civilizations used for some religious purpose. like stuff called ‘the gate of the gods’ or ‘place of the gods’ ? yeah, star gates. ”
“well, i’m not gonna act like i’m that surprised just because it’s not something i’d put past ya, huds. that’s literally so fucking dope though? i’ve never even heard of those and now i’m all pumped and ready to visit some ancient civilization ruins and find myself a star gate.”
“don’t worry, you’ll be the first one to know. probably the only one to know.” she said to her as she ran her fingers through her own hair, fixing the part of it before pushing it out of her face. “we really should plan one night of ruckus though–everybody has to have at least one underage drinking experience, right? where were you the first time you got drunk?” she asked, tilting her head to the side before hearing the next comment and all of it made her giggle, “Stunning? They’re just brown–” She said, “Wait, you’ve been looking at my ass?” She laughed even more as she stirred her drink. “I think my ass is the only thing my mom gave me–so I guess I have to thank her for that.” She said before taking a sip of her drink before nodding, “I’m really starting to think I should just start wearing knee pads and all that whenever I go out. I’d look ridiculous but whatever.” She laughed slightly, “Tripping over thin air does really sound like me. But don’t worry–I’ll try to avoid the thin air.” she shrugged, “But running the register gets so boring. I could definitely not do what you do though, with the flying bottles and just glass everywhere.”
calista shrugged, lifting her hands in mock arrest. “you let me know a night, we’ll do it.” as her hands came down, she reached for her drink, fingers circling the edge of the glass. “the first time i got drunk? probably during my first year of college: that was the closest thing i had to an actual college experience, since i bailed first year. online school for the win. but yeah, it was at some frat party, i think? wasn’t as glamorous as you’d think, really.” calista chuckled, sending an exaggerated wink josslyn’s way. “tell her thanks for me,” she teased. “and yeah, you really do; you could probably start the trend of wearing kneepads and shin guards. i’m sure accident prone people everywhere would thank you for your contribution, you’re not the only one out there who can manage to hurt themselves doing practically nothing.” lifting her drink up to her lips, she smiled. “running the register might be boring but it’s safe. rush hour is hectic around here,” calista paused, gesturing around. “you showed up in the aftermath.”
seated in his office chair, leo spun from left to right as he doodled a drawing on a piece of stencil paper. it wasn’t a potential drawing for anyone specific, but he made a habit of keeping all his drawings, in case someone should want them on their body. it was a true honor really, when people stepped into the shop and let him have free reins, and it eventually ended up permanently inked to someone’s skin. it wasn’t until he heard a greeting from the front room, that he looked up. taking of fhis glasses, the broad shouldered male got up from his seat and headed to the front of the shop. “ yes, how may i help you ? “ he asked, as he tilted his head to the side and crossed his arms across his chest, making his already muscular arms look even bigger.
calista knew that appearances were deceptive, she was a firm advocate of such, and yet she could help but to feel her nerves spike a bit at the sight of whom she could only guess was one of the artists there. she took a minute to compose herself as best she could, smile thinly spreading over her lips as she made eye contact. “um, hi, yeah, i was just like, wondering if you had any openings...now, possibly?” she fiddled with the edges of her sweater, a ruse to keep idle hands busy as her nerves continued to jostle her. “i just, i kind of came in here on a whim, really, and the rest of my week is a bit packed with work, but if you don’t have anything then i can always make an appointment, or something like that,” calista rambled off, thumb jabbing off in the direction of the door. she was sure she appeared as flustered as she felt.
he couldn’t agree MORE to what calista was saying, even if he LOVED american football. jett watched the bartender make their way down to the duo, drumming his fingers against the wooden countertop as he EAGERLY waited for the brunette to order. “ i’m fine with tequila or vodka, you choose our POISON. ”
“vodka all the way,” she said, partially to her company and partially to the bartender. “tequila is not my friend, unfortunately; that stuff fucks me up like you wouldn’t BELIEVE.” calista smiled at the bartender as she slid over her id, even though the two had worked around each other long enough to know that calista was certainly of age, judging by how many bar stops she’d make on her breaks. “so, what’s got you in the mood to drink all your sorrows away? or are you just looking to get drunk for the hell of it?”
“that’s the only time i’m not fucking something up… when i’m sleeping.” she answered. “or eating.” she added, letting out a satisfied sigh at the mere thought of food. “and i know i know. i’ve been so busy with work, trying to save up some money. it’s like no matter how hard i work, i will never get in front of the money struggle.”
calista shook her head. “naw, you don’t fuck things up. although i will tell ya, the money struggle never goes away. four years of educational hell has reduced me to a waitress-slash-struggling artist. we’re all in that boat, unless we like, win the lottery.” calista paused for a moment, pondering the idea. “now that i mention it, lottery doesn’t sound like a bad idea.”
Jadon couldn’t help but laugh when he saw her hands go up in mock arrest. What could he say? It was a cute gesture. He chose his muses well. “Now that’s an arrangement I can agree with,” he said, rising from the bench, pencils in hand. “What if I drew you enjoying the drink while standing on your head?” He paused, “You’re an artist too? What’s your medium?”
calista grinned, gathering her things and slinging her bag over her shoulder as she stood up. “that would certainly be an interesting premise,” she pointed out. “especially seeing as how i have no sense of balance, but that’d probably make it all the more amusing, right?” meeting a fellow artist was always the highlight of her day, feeling herself growing more excited by the second and somewhere in her subconscious, accepting the fact she was about to ramble beyond hope. “my medium?? i like to play around, honestly; watercolor and gouache are for the most part kind to me, and then i really enjoy pen for when i’m just doodling. it’s my mission to play around with them all, but, my bank account forbids it,” she said, tacking on a dramatic sigh at the end. “how about yourself?”
“If I didn’t know better, it would sound like you were trying to get me drunk Lis.” she teased her slightly before shrugging, “We’ll have to see. You might be able to persuade me to partake in delinquency.” she said before shrugging. josslyn would probably never get drunk in a public place but behind closed doors with calista she could probably do it, she’d feel safe enough to do it anyways. she blushed slightly when she said her face was a 12 and she shook her head, “no way–because then that would make your face like a 3000 by your eyes alone so there is no way.” she said before looking at her, “yeah, definitely, you’ll be front row and everything.” she said before putting her hand over her heart, “oh good or else that would have been embarrassing.” she teased slightly before shrugging, “I mean i think he was just running his hand along the shelves and they just fell but he might have been.” she said before taking a sip of her soda as they finally got put in front of them. “Oh another fine thing that happened is that I fell while stocking a shelf today and totally scrapped up my kness. I’m pretty sure I’m just a walking accident at this point.”
calista smiled, not only at the thought of josslyn getting drunk — oh, what an entertaining sight that would be, she was sure — but at the thought that josslyn could trust her that much. “let me know if there’s any time you’ll be in need of persuasion,” she joked playfully, although part of her was still a thousand percent serious. josslyn was safe with her, and calista wanted her to know that. “okay, i’ll give you the eyes, but your ass is enough to just show up and send everyone else home. and don’t doubt your pretty face too, i’m sure someone thinks those eyes of yours are stunning.” resting her cheek against her palm again, she allowed josslyn’s stories to wash over her, only pausing to take her eyes off the girl when their drinks arrived, to make sure she wasn’t about to knock it over in the process of grabbing it. “good god, joss, we just need to wrap you up in bubble wrap before we send you out in the world; i don’t think my poor heart could take it if i got a call from the hospital saying you’d broken your neck tripping over thin air. i’d never let you live it down, either, but that’s beside the point. they need to just keep you running the register where you’re safe and the only harm in your way is getting a paper cut from a dollar bill.”
this is it, she quietly told herself, standing outside the door of the one place she’d always imagined herself the day she turned eighteen, roughly four years later. the body was a canvas, and hers had gone around blank for so long; whether it was the lack of money sitting in her bank account that could go towards something worth the pain or backing out the minute she’d reached the peak of hyping herself up, she’d never had the means to do it. but today, today was going to be different whether she was ready for it or not. fists clenched tightly into a ball, she took a deep breath as she pushed open the door to the tattoo parlor, a small bell jingling overhead to alert anyone in the vicinity of her presence. already she felt the jitters beginning to build up, the sound of the tattoo guns buzzing in the back kindly reminding her what she was getting into. you can do this, calista’s mental pep talk continued, walking up to the abandoned counter. if people can tattoo their whole entire face and walk out unscathed, you can do this. fiddling with the strap of her wristlet, she peered over the edge of the counter to see how far into the back she could see, if there was anyone available. if she didn’t do this now, she was going to bail out again, go another seven or eight months longingly staring at pinterest boards of tattoos she wished she had the guts to get and spend all the money on food. “hello?” she called out awkwardly, feeling almost ridiculous trying to gather someone’s attention.

“a delicious smoothie,” he corrected, his lips quirking upward. finn rocked back on his heels as she spoke, shrugging his shoulders. “it wouldn’t be much of a treat if we went where i want to, i guess.” finn walked off to the side with her, the line shuffling forward in their wake. “i don’t suppose you have anything new for me to add to my collection yet, do you?” he glanced back towards the counter, watching them start to make the order. “i think i’m starting to freak lip out. i keep hiring people to come install new pieces and the other day i think he almost attacked the guy.”
“touché,” calista mused, stepping aside after she finished placing their order, her card safely in her hand. “you know i don’t mind vegan food though; give me a list of your favorites, i’ll pick one, and that way it’ll be like i decided all along, yeah?” shoving her hands into the pockets of her jackets, she got lost in watching the commotion behind the counter. “mm, i’m almost done with a couple of things. don’t know which one will get finished first though, inspiration has been a little more on the dry side lately, i’m afraid.” she glanced back over at finn, her eyebrows quirking in confusion. “wait, you legitimately hire people to hang it up? all it takes is a few command strips, maybe a ladder if you’re enthused by ceiling art. hell, lip’ll probably attack me next time we bump into each other,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. “sometimes i have no idea what to do with you, finnley.”
ja’s eyes popped open at the sound of the warning, a larger than life smile casting upon her lips once she realized just who was crash landing beside her. “see, i was out here trying to be a good productive human of society, and here you’ve come to fuck that all up.” she teased, sitting up on her elbow to face the girl beside her. “you fucking scared me, by the way!” she laughed, falling back.
calista felt her eyes bulge, laughter spilling from her lips. “and how exactly are you being a productive human by laying here on the ground? do enlighten me, miss hernandez, i’m eager to know everything.” she giggled again, letting her head roll to the side so she was facing the brunette. “sorry, sweetheart; it’s in the friend description. if i don’t sneak up on you, who will? besides, i’ve missed you this past week. it’s like we live in different timezones, much less neighborhoods.”
jett listened to the brunette with an AMUSED smile curling upon his brims as she DRAMATICALLY dwelled about football season. he nodded his head as he listened, slipping off his leather jacket and resting it upon the back of his chair. “ isn’t that DISAPPOINTMENT always around with something that is overexaggerated ? i mean, i LOVE sports, but football is hyped up by older men to the EXTREME to the point where it isn’t fun to watch. i feel bad you gotta sit through that screaming, but i see the SAME thing at the shop. ” the blond chuckled, beaming when calista announced that drinks are on her. “ sick ! let’s take shots. ”
she sighed, resting her chin on the top of her propped up fist. “i couldn’t even enjoy football if i wanted to; the people here have ruined it for me. can’t even go past a game when i’m flipping channels without thinking of some middle-aged father wearing a jersey asking me every time i stop by their table if i can change the channel already.” calista paused, glancing over at her company with the beginnings of a smirk tugging at her lips. “nice to know i’m not the only one who suffers, though.” at the sound of the word ‘shots’ calista immediately perked up, shedding the dreary attitude from her shoulders and flexing out her fingers. “i am ALWAYS up for shots, wonderful suggestion,” she said with a wink following after, hand lifting to flag down the bartender.
“I guess I will just have to experience it for myself now.” she said, smiling when Calista winked at her. she pouted a bit at calista’s guess for how she would be and she made a face, “So I’d basically be that annoying girl that everyone hates at parties because she’s always running into everything. It sounds like I’m just better off sticking with being the designated driver.” she said before laughing when she watched calista spin around on the chair. “Watch it there slugger–I bruise easy.” She smiled before nodding, “yeah, that works.” she looked at her, “of course I’m not, that’s why I asked you nut.” she said, pushing on calista’s shoulder slightly, which caused her to spin a bit more. “Fun run-ins at the grocery store? Uh, I don’t know if they be considered fun. I had a guy tell me today that my body was a 10 but my face made me like a 5 so that’s always nice.” she laughed slightly before looking at her, “Getting a phone number for a survey–dang that is such a good idea, I’m totally stealing that from you. Like legit, that’s so easy to do.” she said as she cleared her throat and looked at calista, “I’m taking down a bunch of people’s phone numbers for a survey, do you mind if I add yours to the list?” she said as she laughed, hitting her palm on her thigh, “That is totally smooth–oh man Lis, that’s like actually genius.” she said before thinking about the rest of her day. “I had to clean up an aisle of broken glass after a toddler threw a tantrum and started throwing the pickle jars on the floor, talk about glamorous.”
“aw, i didn’t say that; i’d be happy to be your designated driver in about three years when you can legally get wasted and figure out what kind of drunk you are. and if you decide to break the rules a little bit and find out ahead of time, you’re more than welcome to come partake in delinquency at my place,” calista offered, laugh falling from her lips. she was relieved to hear josslyn begin talking about her day; while calista found herself quite boring and other people entirely more fascinating, she couldn’t help but to be captivated by the other brunette and the stories she told. she listened closely, her green eyes never leaving the girl. “wait, he said your face was a five? i’m sorry, that’s entirely wrong; your face is at least a solid twelve.” she chuckled, resting her cheek against her propped up fist. “feel free to borrow my tips, although i expect to be thanked when you get married to that person all because of my clever little idea. and since you asked, i’ll gladly give you mine,” she said, chuckling. “was this toddler the hulk’s child, or what? i still struggle getting pickle jars down without my arms wobbling a little bit, those things are fuckin’ heavy.”
tave already has a draft in his hand, and he sips from it as he watches the girl unwind beside him. the slightest indication of a smile tugs at the corner of his mouth, and he shrugs a shoulder. “could be worse, you could be a bears fan,” he jokes, speaking of his home city’s football team and their consecutively wretched losing streak over the past couple of years.
calista merely hummed in approval, her head falling to the side in contemplation of his statement. “i suppose you make a solid point. although i have to admit, other than who wins and who loses, i don’t know a damn thing about the game of football, so i struggle to see why everyone goes absolutely berserk over the games,” she muttered bitterly, carding a hand through her hair. “any theories? i need an explanation for the madness.”
ja rested her fatigued body in the grass of the park, her eyes closed peacefully though she hummed along to the song in her head. she was in between working a double shift, and honestly she was already wiped out of energy from the first half. she listened as kids played soccer yards away from her resting body, the birds chirping every now and again. none of her friends were anywhere to be found to lend their couches over for means of a quick nap, so the next place ja had on her mind was the lush grass of the park. so far, she didn’t regret her decision.
she’d decided on taking the long walk home, preferring the scenic route through the park in hopes it would lift her tired spirits from quite the shift at work. calista had walked past without noticing anything to begin, but quickly retraced her steps, moving backwards to see if the corners of her eye had lied to her. sure enough, there lay someone on the ground. she approached slowly, only to see that it was ja, a smile stretching over her teeth. “watch out,” calista announced, dropping her bag on the ground before the rest of her body followed. “company’s joining you in three, two, now.”
josslyn snapped her fingers, “dang it, I thought I could just live vicariously thorough you.” she said before watching calista’s finger trace over the top of the bar. “who knew you could get any wittier than you already are?” she laughed before thinking for a second, “ I wonder what kind of drunk I would be–what do you think?” she asked, turning to look up at the girl instead. she nodded, “can you imagine? that would be probably one of the worst friendships you could have.” she replied before following her gaze towards the bartender before looking back towards her, smiling when she saw her looking back at her. “then thursday night it is, it’s a date.” she said. “sounds like I’m a pretty good influence on you then.” she laughed slightly before getting her card back and putting it back in her wallet. “Okay so other than the whole football debacle–how was the rest of your day?”
“sorry, sugar,” calista teased, shooting a wink at the girl. “just from the looks of it, you’d either be a really clumsy drunk, or one of those people who is entirely disoriented and doesn’t have a clue what’s going on. both are, of course, a lot better than losing all sense of your morality.” she interlaced both of her hands together, bringing them down into her lap as she swiveled the rest of her body around, playfully hitting josslyn’s kneecap. “thursday, definitely a date. i’ll pick you up at seven? you are a pretty good influence, i’ll give you that one,” she admitted. “the rest of my day was alright — god, you’re probably tired of hearing about my day.” closing her eyes, calista shook her head a few times in attempt to clear her mind. “tell me about your day, j-baby; any fun run-ins at the grocery store? see any cute people you might end up having to get their phone number for some ‘survey?’ tell me everything, so i can live vicariously through you and your job that’s probably a lot more chill than mine.”
“ oh, well, where do i even begin ? first of all, the government is hiding so much stuff from us. literally so much. we’re talking factual evidence, statistics, secret files, international cover ups, illegal experiments, alien activity, dead bodies. yeah, i definitely wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve already found the remains of extraterrestrials and shoved them away in area 51. did you know even nasa doctors photographs and videos to cover up u.f.o. sightings ? and how the moon landing was completely faked ? and that it’s heavily believed that there are star gates on earth linking us to other dimensions across the universe ? there’s just so much i—oh, sorry. i’m rambling again aren’t i ? ”
“no, no, the rambling is fine. i’m baffled you figured all of that out by five in the morning though, for the most part impressed. i’ve heard about the faked moon landing a few times in high school history a million years ago; what i wanna know more about is the star gates though, what the fuck is that even supposed to mean? more importantly, how do i access one?”
