EVERY1 SHUT UP OMG ok so im rewatching NPMD for the hundredth time && holy shit,,, during the plan when every1 comes out && Max is complimenting every1 he BOWS for Ruth. Ruths dream is 2 act,, and thats the 1st time shes kinda ever had α role && thats the 1st praise shes ever gotten for it.

THEN during Just For Once where Ruth is FINALLY actually on the stage yknow whos the 1st person 2 boo her ?? Max Jagerman. Normally that would hurt α bunch since thats her dream && even if its in an empty auditorium shes putting herself put there,, but it could be passed off as classic Jagerman bullying. But it just hurts that much more since MAX was the 1st person 2 ever cheer for her.

BUT OMG OK SO CONTINUED THOUGHT RIGHT AS I TYPED THAT YKNOW WHAT ROLE MAX CHEERED HER FOR ?? The role Ruth was playing in The Plan was the fuckin BACKUP PLAN DUDE ‼️‼️So NOW it extra feels like even if she can be on the stage she’ll never make it as α lead. If shes not in the booth shes probably Tree A. Never in the spotlight,, never the leading lady

the thing that I love about The Moon Will Sing is that it completely subverts the moon and sun trope, but in a completely believable way that, in my opinion, suits the trope way better.

the moon and sun are in no way equals. the moon is given everything it owns by the sun, and it can be taken away just as quickly. like the lyrics say, 'bore the shadows that you gave with no light of my own.' the moon literally shines only with the light given by the sun.

in this song, the moon and sun are used to depict a toxic relationship rather than a healthy one, the singer being in the moon's position, feeling that their love for someone consumed their own sense of self.

i love that the crane wives don't use the trope as it often is, and instead uses it to fit their own narrative. it's genius writing.

So. Nerdy Prudes Must Die Spoilers

Nerdy Prudes Must Die is an amazing musical with a lot of amazing song but one i feel goes overlooked a lot is Just For Once which is really sad because in all honesty this is probably some of the most emotional I got during the musical.

I often see it lumped into the bottom tier songs and while it doesn’t have the grandness of the whole “will you pray for me” segment or the cool plot twists of Dirty Dudes Must Die, it does have the line that hit me the hardest in the show

“I used to dance”

this is because this line works on two main levels, for me at least.

the song on the surface is about Ruth getting lost in the character of a suburban housewife and talking about that characters life, but all of the dialogue is also a reflection of Ruth’s character in general. Reflecting both the character and Ruth’s desperate need for attention, which is all Ruth has really wanted since the show has started

(this is probably not a shocker but i mostly wanted to get this out of my system)

on the surface this line is about a housewife giving up on her hobbies as she grows older as slowly loses her autonomy. this is an incredibly real thing that is really interesting and tragic.

But this line also fits my analysis of Ruth’s character (there is a tad bit of projecting)

Bare with me for a second. When I was younger I used to be in a bunch of dance and acting groups and loved preforming, but after things like the pandemic (and a healthy dose of bullying) it got a lot harder to put myself out there and after attempts of trying out for school musicals failed due to how introverted i could become, I started experimenting with tech theater. I love tech, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes i would kill to be one of the leads on stage

I think this is what happened to Ruth.

She used to dance.

She used to be the one on stage, in the spotlight. Now she is ignored until needed and works backstage.

This is her alone, on stage, pretending to be an actor in the show. The character that she is playing is merging with her real thoughts. She is singing from the perspective of someone else, but she is not reading off of a script (i mean she might be, but i always thought this was more improv) these thoughts are from her and her alone. The real her is peaking through this character.

This song, while probably not the best sounding, has some really interesting things to say about Ruth as a character

The Tragedy of Ruth Flemming <3 <3 <3

"You're splitting me in two!"

Ruth Flemming has only ever wanted to be loved. The only girl in a small friend group of nerds, Ruth is constantly told (and telling herself) that she will never know what it feels like to be wanted. People tell her to die every day. Ruth isn't seen as a girl. She's seen as a nerd. That's her entire identity. She craves to be touched not just because she's unbelievably horny, but because it would mean someone wants to touch her; it would mean someone thinks she's worth that level of intimacy. She would be someone. When you watch coming of age movies and you get to the part where the guy sees the girl for the first time and the world stops and maybe their hands touch as they reach for some fallen items and there's such an intense electricity that they have to pull their hands and flinch away--that's all Ruth Flemming has ever wanted. To be the girl in the movie. In her final moments, Ruth gets her standalone moment. She gets an entire song where she not only gets to sing, but monologue and act and act out being the girl of a movie (even if this girl is now middle-aged and overlooked and unwanted; the latter of which being how Ruth feels about herself). I could say so much about Just For Once, I know many people dislike that song but I think it's genius, especially in conjugation with the rest of the development and twists that NPMD places on different typical 2000's movie tropes, such as Richie's development and death. But I'm veering off track. She has just done something she's wanted to do for a long time. She acted. Even if it was just for herself, it was a start. Much like Richie starting to feel acceptance from the football team, Ruth is starting to feel a small build of confidence. And then Max destroys it. Not only does he mock her performance, but he kills her in the most painful possible way I can imagine Ruth being killed; a fucking wedgie. Obviously this continues the theme of Max killing his victims with extreme bullying methods (though this only happens to his first two victims, Richie and Ruth), but it's more than that. How often do you hear of a girl getting wedgied? I know it sounds ridiculous to read, but really. Think about it. You don't. And this brings me back to my earlier point; Ruth isn't seen as a girl. She's just a nerd. And nerd's get wedgied all the time. In Ruth's final moments, Max destroys everything Ruth had just built up. She's not a girl, she doesn't get her moment, she's a bad actor ("You SUCK, Flemwad!"), and the past five minutes that she had to feel herself and perform are now tarnished by the knowledge that she was being watched and the watcher wasn't a fan of what they saw. Max does more than take away Ruth's life, he takes her spirit. I love you Ruth Flemming. You deserve the world, you deserve the Globe Theatre, you deserve love and you deserve attention and you deserve life.

he's the culmination of the literal generational curse that goes back to his great-great grandmother. she's a fifteen year old that's existed for three years. he's the younger brother of the chosen one who doesn't want to be the chosen one so he's kinda the chosen one now. she's making a concerted effort to become every single dc villain. he has bulletproofing in the mascot costume he hasn't taken off for a year so someone doesn't steal it. she stole the mascot costume. he's in love with her. she's in love with all of their friends who are also their spouses except for him (and her uncle but we don't talk about that). he underwent six months of puberty at once. she tried to kill herself in the void of space. he wants nothing more than his dad(s) approval. she wants to kill her dads. from the makers of now my tongue's in his mouth comes the all new OAKWORTHY SAGA, showing this summer in all good theatres of the mind . because they haven't talked in ten episodes. did i mention that. im going insane

you wanna know one thing about the trial verdict that really gets me. that i dont think ive ever heard anyone really talk about. is just the implications of morgan being alive in this new timeline at all. like theoretically the only significant change made to the timeline was morgan ending up with jodie instead of glenn. specifically keeping morgan alive wasnt part of the ultimatum. so wouldnt that imply that glenn being in morgans life eventually butterfly-effects into her death? that her being with someone other than him would keep her alive, whether through a series of actions or just one decision? of course, its hard to blame someone for causing something like that. its not like they couldve known, or really even do anything about it. but technically, its true. the evidence is right there. the love of his life was better off without him. so is that fucked up or what

it's not just Ayda on her own and everything she represents, the behaviors and qualities that tons of autistic people can see themselves into, it's the way people treat her too. She never masks and people communicate with her exactly the way she is. Fig says she loves explaining things to her and loves the way Ayda dissects them, she says it makes her think about everything more deeply and that she likes that about Ayda. Adaine loves having someone who's as intellectually driven as her, is extremely patient with her from the get go and always trying to be kind to her, creates a spell for her to help her!!! with her struggles as an autistic young woman!!! to aid her in situations where she might feel too confused!!! (and we know that one of Ayda's deepest struggles is when she doesn't understand things!!!) literally disability aid in a specially crafted wizard spell 😭

and then there's everyone else being a sweetheart to her, Gorgug always trusts her authority and her judgement and on her behalf (though without her knowing or asking for it) asks Aguefort to stop the silence between them because Ayda doesn't want that anymore, Riz says her formal way of speaking and interacting with others is way better than whatever shit they're doing, Kristen is so warm with her and psyched about sharing an identity with her (which is something that matters so damn much to Kristen), Fabian has the least interactions with her and is still really excited about her dating Fig and when he gets misunderstood by Ayda does explain himself more clearly. Not to mention Fig's three parents and her stepdad all take to Ayda, actively include her and praise her, and Jawbone gives her this incredible gift of learning that there's nothing wrong with her.

like Ayda is not only cool as fuck but extremely valued by the people she meets who love her not in spite of her autistic traits but because of them, because they bring a rationality and a depth to their lives they didn't quite have before, and because they enjoy helping her in moments when she needs more support than her neurotypical peers. like we love Ayda but every bit as much as that, Brennan loves Ayda and Emily loves Ayda and all the intrepid heroes love her too and it matters so much to me that he chose to write an autistic character who is extremely loved and understood and supported, and the whole cast went along with that and loved her.

going to ramble enjoy or don’t that is okay too

i am obsessed with the fact that the chaos and uncertainty of what’s going to happen throughout the season accurately reflects how chaotic and insane adolescence is???? and how the fantastical (is that the right word i don’t know??? dystopian???) narrative sort of weaves it’s way around the teens’ day-to-day life WHICH IS WHY I LOVE THE TEEN FACT THAT NORMAL STILL DOES HIS HOMEWORK!!!!! BECAUSE THATS WHO HE IS!!!! like yeah he is the son of a man who has genetically inherited monster blood or whatsver but he’s also a kid who wants to pass his classes!!!! it gives him some normalcy (LOL) in between being in hell or finding out fucked uo stuff about his family!!! and you know what? he also has a crush on his friend because he is a teenager and that’s what’s going to happen no matter what goes on!!!! (this is slowly becoming about normal sorry not sorry) he is still figuring out and is totally confused about who he is and that’s so apparent and that’s why i love this season so much!! we see him battle with what to do and who to trust because everything around him, or atleast his perception of it, is changing. from his parents to his literal Only friends, he is losing almost all stability that he has around him and we see him accommodate (??) to that by figuring himself out along with the world around him!!!!! AHHHH!!!

and i LOVE that when you compare this to season 1, there is such a unique difference in the characters and how they function based on the world around them!!! like take season 1, the world that the dads find themselves in is a completely new one that they have never seen before (unless they have watched any fantasy movie ever but that is besides the point) so they are adapting to a new space physically. if that makes sense whilst the teens are having to adapt to a change in their environment that they’ve been in their whole life but not because the actual physical space is changing but because they are learning and discovering new things about it??? and therefore they’re the reason it’s changing????? does this make sense i don’t know but i think it’s neat that in s1, the world had changed whilst in s2, it’s the teens that are changing ????? it’s 3am leave me alone i cannot articulate my thoughts here ❤️❤️❤️❤️ peace and love on planet earth

Trying to piece together the miscommunication between Link and Normal where they both think the other doesn't know what they want and I think it's that the level of results they're each looking for is different. Link wants to know what to do from moment to moment and every decision in each moment is backed by "which option gets fewer people hurt or killed." Whereas Normal isn't looking for a moment-to-moment goal, he's looking for a long term goal of helping the Doodler, and so what that looks like from moment to moment isn't always going to look the same.

So like, the moment with the pick. To Link, Normal is the one who doesn't know what to do because Normal doesn't know what to do in that moment to resolve the anchor, while Link takes a quick action. But from Normal's point of view it looks like Link has no idea what he's doing because his actions had no thought towards the ongoing Doodler problem.

just thinking about scary's relationship to normal again. because like. more than anyone else normal represents the team. he represents trust, and love, and second chances, and scary knows that. under the zone of truth she tells norm that she's impressed by him. she looks to him for reassurance when she finally tries to work with her friends.

she feels it. she needs it. and she can't stand it, the same way she can't stand terry trying to love her, or her mom, or herself. in a lot of ways they're all the same. like terry, norm is too clingy, he gives her too much trust, too much love, too many chances to love herself, and for that, she has to punish him the same way she punishes terry, the same way she's punishing herself.

and it's just so fucking sad because you can see the kid creating her own cycle of violence in real time. allowing the pain given to her by her father to corrode everything and everyone around her, especially the people who love her. especially the people who let her think that maybe she might be worthy of it.

I remember when Sparrow got hit by Barry that one time and in his bloody and concussed state saw his twin get basically killed, collapsing onto the ground and going completely still. And poor little Sparrow the love wolf got up with his two gloves and he stroked Lark’s face and he put on the Hulk Fists and he got angry. And later Henry told the boys to love the world like they loved each other. And I think in many ways, Sparrow is still that person. Still that little kid who is angry at the world for hurting his family, terrified of failing them and watching them die, he is loving to the point of pain and yet he cannot escape the family curse of neuroticism and anger in the face of fright.

He named his kids after the things he wanted most. Normalcy, a real childhood, not one snuffed out at age 12. He is watching his son, Normal Oak, named after the thing he wanted so desperately for himself, barely older than he was when he went through world ending/changing shit and is watching his son go through a combination of every pain and fear that not only he, but every Oak went through. And he holds so fucking tightly to the fear and love that it becomes choking, where he says he isn’t proud of Normal because Normal acts so much like he did as a child. The little love wolf and the mascot kid. How Normal has such a kind heart just like Sparrow did and he loves and loves and loves and gets hurt so bad because of it. “I’m projecting,” says Sparrow in episode 6. He loves Normal so much, he’s so scared for Normal, and yet he sees so much of himself in Normal that he can’t help but equate his failings and fears and insecurities onto his son who embraces all those things with a confidence he never could maintain.

He names his eldest child Hero and sometimes I wrack my brain trying to remember who is the eldest twin. I wonder if he thought of Lark when he named her, thought of what Lark was to him. A hero. Lark sees himself as a failure, as a dead beat, as a piece of shit who caused the world to end, the ultimate doom upon the world and Sparrow sees him as his older brother. The one who fought by his side, the one who did everything for Sparrow. I wonder if he looked at little baby Hero and named her after the thing he saw his older sibling as, or if he named her also after a thing he wished for. A savior, a hero, someone to liberate them. Or maybe he named her after the thing he wished to be. Lark keeps trying to martyr himself in the name of humanity, do whatever he can to throw his body on the pyre and kill the Doodler once and for all. Lark puts the blame on himself, Sparrow puts it on both of them. Do you think he ever wanted to be Lark’s hero? Knowing he could never truly help a man who doesn’t want it, knowing his best friend is now a man living in his attic and shares the same face and is the uncle to his children but the two barely know each other how they used to. How they argue and fight and Sparrow watches Lark rot away in his attic bedroom and Sparrow wishes he could save him just as much as he wishes he could condemn them both. How much of a curse yet a blessing it is to be the eldest child.

tbh i’ll admit i’ve been putting off my relisten of dndads season 1 because i’m at henry’s arc and i vaguely remembered it being a bit slow even though i remember enjoying it a lot and. i am SO upset i put it off i’ve binged it all in one night and i have THOUGHTS LIKE…

GOD. henry’s character arc is so fucking good like. he came from this toxic, emotionally-abusive place, where over time it became more obvious to him that he didn’t belong. his dad was never proud. he was bullied regularly and then told HE was the problem. his mom, which he clearly loves very, very much, pulled away from him probably from a mixture of the abuse she herself was facing and the fact that henry reminded her of how messed up it all was too. she tried to KILL HIS DAD. which was justified but GOD it must have fucked with henry’s head like. there is something so painful about being raised in a toxic environment and then having the feeling that nothing changes even though you know it deeply should and dungeons and daddies nails it on the fucking head. 

so he finds this broken mirror, right? maybe he knows its purpose. maybe he doesn’t. maybe he wants to escape. maybe he just wants to make his dad proud. but he fixes it, eventually, because he’s smart, and then suddenly he doesn’t remember anything from before and he’s in this whole new fucking world. 

god. henry loves nature. henry loves earth. henry grew up surrounded by trees that were all the same and people who were all unfair and suddenly he was surrounded by so much beautiful diversity… he’s treated with love. the only thing he really remembers is he had a fight with his dad and they never talked again which is so??? he forgot everything except that his dad was bad news and that hurts me so much. he wants to know about his past but he also doesn’t. it’s so painful. i have the hc that henry didn’t forget for any magic reason, it was just him repressing his trauma. and it makes me so SAD man. 

and then his boys- the light of his life- are born. he loves them. he loves them so much it hurts. and they love him too, he thinks, and henry doesn’t know what the hell to do with that. his mom loved him but hated him at the same time. his dad was never proud, always saying henry was to blame. but now he’s got these two beutiful kids who he loves so fucking much and he’s so scared of screwing up. he’s so scared. 

henry comes back to the forgotten realms and he can do magic. he doesn’t know why but he can. henry find out his dad brought him here and he’s suddenly faced with repressed trauma he doesn’t want to remember. he loves his boys. he loves his wife. he needs to go home. he heads to oakvale. 

can you imagine how painful that must’ve been??? for him to visit this place where he never belonged and find he still doesn’t??? henry is such a forgiving and nice person. i have to imagine there was a part of him- however small- that thought, maybe it changed. maybe it’s okay now. but it isn’t, and nothing’s different, and henry’s just a kid again who can’t make his dad proud. 

and his boys are there. they’re saying they love him. henry is having a mental breakdown and they love him. henry has found out he doesn’t belong anywhere, actually, and they love him. 

he sees his mom. he loves his mom. she seems excited for a moment. it all goes dull. he loves his mom and she is telling him she was happier when he wasn’t here. he loves his mom and nothing’s right. 

they’re your grandchildren, he says. they’re you’re grandchildren. henry isn’t confident in himself- henry has a sort of hatred for himself, actually, because he was never shown to love the parts of him that were faults. but he’s confident in his children. he loves his children so fucking much. they’re a lot sometimes and they don’t listen but they’re the best thing that’s ever happened to him. they’re your grandchildren. be proud of me. they’re your grandchildren. mom- i love you. 

i don’t want to meet them, autumn yells. and henry finally understands the extent of which he will never.
