*deep breath* If the antifascist (esp. American-centered) art you make or consume refuses to acknowledge the truth that framing this time period as the "sudden rise of fascism" along with its supposed volatility (i.e. "it can't last; that's not how its built") is just a comforting construct to keep white Americans from reckoning with their literal centuries of active and passive participation in this country's fascist, genocidal violence against Indigenous and Black people, your art isn't just wrong...it's worthless. How can you imagine dismantling unjust systems without seeing the blood on your own hands? How do you comprehend the size of the fight for mutual liberation without seeing that the scale of the threat is exponentially larger than your personal experience of the danger of state violence; or is your envisioned win condition only as shallow as the return to your previous sense of safety?

Ignoring the complexities and well-established enmeshment of fascism in Western culture for the sake of simpler stories to inspire rising to this moment in history only builds fair-weather fighters ill-prepared for the rigors of revolutionary action. It also widens the rift between those newly awakened to the struggle and their neighbors that have lived it for generations (and have built and maintained systems of community support and resistance that have protected them for just as long).

If antifascist art doesn't first demand you turn the eye inward, it is only escapist fluff.

Several times on here I've seen the take "I know local theater is bad and cringey, but you have to support it anyway!" And while I understand what they're getting at, I'm always like, why do you assume it's going to be "bad" just because the artists are members of your own community? I just saw a local production of The Importance of Being Earnest and it was HILARIOUS. Everyone was DELIGHTFULLY funny and we thoroughly enjoyed it! There have been so many times I've been greatly moved by "amateur" or student art, and if you can't allow yourself to appreciate anything but "the Best" (and who decides what "the Best" is anyway? This production of "Earnest" was way funnier than the version that Judy Dench and Rupert Everett were in, as deservedly "famous" as they might be) then you are just being a joyless snob. There's beauty and talent all around you. And if that makes me "easy to please," then well... That means I'm pleased more often! And why should I want to apologize for that?

the first time beth stands up because of mr smith, it's in submission. automatic. no one notices it, but it makes her feel dumb and weird.

the second time, it's in retaliation. an assert of her own dominance. even if the standing up itself is a surprise to her, even if everyone sees it, it doesn't make her feel dumb or weird. the next step is something she does off her own accord. she just needs to make a decision: is she going to dance too?

I just saw John Proctor is the Villain and I'm thinking so much about the scene of Shelby and Raelynn at the gas station.

How it is the only scene in the play that doesn't take place in the classroom. The two of them have a scene together earlier, but its different this time. In this moment it's just them, away from Carter's influence, away from Lee, away from everyone and everything else that is going on. Yes they talk about all those other things, but in that scene all that matters is them and that they are people and they are friends and a lot of terrible things happened to them but they are going to be together as they work through it all.

Nothing is okay and it might not get better for a really long time but for now they will laugh about it together. Because right now it's just them.

i think beth probably struggles with not being the "perfect victim". not in terms of like being an easy target i mean in how she handled what happened to her and also shelby. that she wasn't resisting what he said enough, that she wasn't supporting shelby enough, that It didn't even go that far. beth has always prided herself in being prepared and doing things well and right so to find out she wasn't handling what happened as well as she thought she did probably made her deeply upset and conflicted with whether she was doing ANYTHING up to that point right

beth debating whether john proctor was a hero and everyone agreeing he wasnt while she believed he was. and mr smith is basically supposed to be proctor. so it's beth's trust in him that's tested. and also the fact that they came to that conclusion by using a method He taught them. and he thinks proctor was a hero and one of the best characters ever so that's another thing

Genuinely couldn’t fall asleep last night because I was thinking about John Proctor is the Villain. It was so powerful and painful and cathartic and made me want to hug my teenage self and also tell the teenage girls in the audience that some things will get better and will start to make sense but also that they will still sometimes feel like they’re screaming and no one is listening but that they’ll get better at finding ways to make themselves heard.

There were so many times watching it that I just had tears forming in my eyes because I knew the feelings so well and could see what was coming and couldn’t stop it. I felt on pins and needles watching Mr. Smith - I hadn’t seen spoilers, but I just knew. And when everything came to a head with that sudden blackout, I felt myself and the audience gasp out loud and felt the sudden plunging grief and fear of what that admission meant.

I felt it when the girls were told their feminist club would ruffle too many feathers. When they tried to work out the good men they knew from the monsters they were told to fear. When they wanted to dress different and their boyfriend told them it wasn’t them. When they said they weren’t sure they knew who they were. When they were told to hold their tempers in class and to not talk about things that might make people uncomfortable.

And I felt it building when they asked why they were expected to apologize. When they questioned whether they could see a world where men didn’t tell them what to do, when they asked for a world they could make their own. When they wanted to be scary because then maybe someone would listen. When they promised to be made of fire that will burn down the earth to make room for the world they deserve.

And I felt it when they danced, when the lights went haywire, when they kept going after he tried to stop them, when they got on the desk and tore their small world apart and danced in a new world that was theirs if only for those three minutes.

and she responded that she thought that the girls got in trouble and mr smith was never punished

don't know why I'm posting this, but i thought it was interesting
