She shook her head while clicking her tongue. “Shame on you, you should be honoured to take him for a walk…”, she joked, elbowing her softly. “Either way, I think I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to take him out myself”, she commented. “After all, I don’t see him a lot on a daily basis, because of work, you know? So taking him for walks is my way of spending time with my little boy”, she added with a shrug. She laughed at the words of the dreadlocked woman, now excited to see if she could actually manage to impress her. “Well, you’ve got my attention now”, she chuckled. “Sounds alright to me, Cosima”, reassured her, quickly following her. The blonde listened intently, nodding at her companion. “I’m sure you know the neighbourhood betten than me anyway. I mostly just go from home to work and vice versa, or to the park with Tesla, or to the grocery store just around the corner…”, she explained. “I don’t really know many people and I certainly don’t go out much”.

Cosima couldn’t help but look at Delphine out of the corner of her eye at the mention of her little boy. She should tell the blonde her dog was the size of a newborn elephant, but Delphine was too adorable while talking about Tesla, it would be a sin to stop her from doing that. “It’s called Saint Frank Coffee and they serve the best coffee ever, honestly.” Maybe her excitement about the quality of the infusion of that locale was too much, but she has always enjoyed a good coffee. “It is a very interesting neighbourhood, you know, there’s a lot of young adults and that brings a lot of... life and color to the place. If you like nightlife you should join my friends and me some time...” Cosima’s invitation was mostly because, if Delphine accepted going out with her, she’d get to see her again, alcohol in-between. No, she didn’t want to get the girl drunk, but the dreadlocked girl was more... extroverted after a couple of drinks and that helped A LOT when she was trying to hook up with someone. “And where do you come from? I mean, where were you before moving here?”

At the implication of her having to make up for being late, the french woman raised an eyebrow, feeeling both amused and curious about what she could come up with. “Oui, I guess you’ll have to do just that”, she said playfully. She thought for a moment, trying to recall if she had gone to a nice coffee shop lately, or at least saw one that she wanted to try. When she couldn’t think of a place to go, she just shrugged, throwing a smile at Cosima’s way. “I’m fairly okay with anywhere. I mean, I just moved here a while ago, so I don’t really know many places yet”, she replied, waving one of her hands in the air. “Now that I think about it, you could be my city guide, some other day”, she added as an afterthought, tilting her head to the side.

“I can take Tesla for a walk,” offered Cosima with the custest smile ever, “I’m kidding, just to clarify.” added after a couple of seconds. She would never risk her well-being walking that... lovely... beast. “Oh, so you’re new in town, I think I need to impress you with a nice coffee shop and I know exactly where to go.” explained, her smile now broader. “It’s like 6 or 7 blocks from here, so I hope you’re fine with walking.”. Now it was more than evident that Cosima forgot about the tense environment from the beginnig and was her normal self again (thanks god). “Hm, yeah, I could be your city guide but... I don’t go far from the neighbourhood myslef so I dont’ know a lot about downtown,” she started telling while walking. “all my friends live near here and we go out to the nearest bars or parties, you know...”

The blonde managed not to start full on laughing at Cosima’s desperation, still putting on an angry face. But once she said she understood if she was mad, a smile pulled at the corners of her mouth. “I was playing with you, Cosima”, she admitted, taking a drag from her cigarette, the smile still plastered on her face. “I mean, I still think it’s a bit rude to be late, but it was just ten minutes, and considering you apologized and looked completely mortified while doing so, I’m going to let it slide for once”, she added, winking at her, still partly joking, at the same time she threw the butt of the cigarette on the ground and stepped on it. 

A confused expression took over Cosima’s face when the blonde started laughing. Instantly the petite woman frowned, puzzled about what was happening. “Oh... Ok, I- I just thought you were pissed be- because your fa... Nevermind,” she almost says she thought Delphine was mad judging by the rude expression on her face, but maybe that exact comment would make the woman get actually pissed. Now she felt just embarrassed, not worried anymore. “Well, I think I will have to make up for it, uh? I’m really sorry,” suggested the student, a little bit more confident (but still embarrassed). That wink made Cosima believe her knees just got weak, that’s why she leant slyly against the wall. “We should get going, is there any particular place you’d like to go or you’re ok with any coffee shop?” asked the girl once she convinced herself her legs were functional again.

Delphine had left work at 2 p.m. on the dot, walking straight home from the vet clinic, so she could get some stuff done at home and get ready for her coffee date with certain dreadlocked girl without having to rush. After getting home, she went for a quick walk with Tesla, and when she got back, she took a quick shower and proceeded to get ready. By 4:55 p.m., she was just outside the building, as punctual as ever, waiting for Cosima. She had been there standing for fifteen minutes, smoking her second cigarette, when she saw the brunette step outside. The blonde wasn’t that annoyed at the other woman’s lateness, but she decided to put on a little of a show, just to tease her, so she fixed her face on a glare, while looking at Cosima walking to up to her.

When the petite girl’s eyes found Delphine, she automatically rushed her way outside. At this point her mind couldn’t even find an excuse, when she saw the other woman’s face Cosima felt almost scared of the possible response to her lateness. “Delphine, my gosh, I am so SO so sorry. I -I got a call from... from a relative and they... and... Ugh, I’m just sorry” the brunette knew her apologies weren’t making any sense, that’s why she avoided giving a poor explanation. “I understand if you are mad, ok?” Maybe Cosima was overreacting, she was only 10 minutes late, not an hour, but her neighbour’s face denoted some annoyance and she felt the need to apologize.

Cosima was never the most punctual person, and she never would be. Arriving late to work or classes was a constant in her life, and today’s date was not an exception to the rule. At exactly 4:59 p.m. the dreadlocked woman was still getting her make up done, and the eyeliner wasn’t helping. Ok, maybe it was her fault, she got nervous the last time she cheked the time and couldn’t apply the eyeliner properly the first three times, but now the cat-like lines around her eyes were... decent. Then, the student took her handbag and rushed out of her apartment, where she called the lift and instantly got in it once the doors opened. “Fuck” whispered Cosima when she looked at her phone and noticed it was 5:08 p.m. already. When the doors opened again,  as she left the elevator quickly, Cosima looked around to find her... date? Trying to come up with an excuse about her lateness.

Delphine: I would argue that.

Delphine: But if I do it'll probably go on for hours...

Delphine: Sunday works. I mean, I also work an early shift at the vet clinic, but I'll be out by 2PM.

Cosima: You couldn't even go on for 30 mins, you don't know me that well

Cosima: Ok, see you at 5 outside our building?

Cosima: I mean, outside the apartment block, we don't own a building

Delphine: Are you sure of that?

Delphine: Oui, and that's exactly why I went with you to the hospital to get you checked.

Delphine: I wouldn't leave Rambo an orphan...

Delphine: Oh, right. When are you free?

Cosima: Pretty sure

Cosima: I'm only free on Sunday, what about you?

Delphine: Okay, okay. I do owe you a coffee date, it's a fact.

Delphine: Has anyone ever told you you can be pretty smug?

Delphine: That's a bit too dramatic, Cosima.

Cosima: You're the first.

Cosima: I fell on a rock! It could have caused me a trauma

Cosima: So... as regards the coffee date...

Delphine: Oui, I guess that's true.

Delphine: The owing-you-a-coffee-date part, of course. Tesla is harmless, he wouldn't even growl at someone.

Cosima: You guess? I would say it's a fact.

Cosima: I could have died the other night at the park.

Cosima: Don't you think you owe me a coffee date?

Cosima: I mean... Your dog almost kills me, it's the least you could do.

As Saturday night came, Delphine decided it was the perfect occasion to cuddle up with Tesla on the couch, wrap a blanket around themselves and have a movie night. Around 1AM, after having gone through a movie and a half, Tesla had got up and left her side to walk to the front door of the apartment and scratched it lightly with his left paw. “What’s up, buddy? You want to go out for a walk?”, the blonde asked the huge golden retriever, who just started wiggling his tail excitedly. She just smiled at her dog and got up from the couch, grabbed a jacket before checking her cigarettes and lighter were on any of the pockets, her keys and a bunch of plastic bags just in case. They got out of the apartment and took the stairs down quickly, went through the lobby and got out to the park of the building complex. Then, Delphine took a cigarette out of her pack and put it on her mouth and quickly lighted it, while slowly following Tesla through the park. For a second she lifted her gaze to the night sky, fully covered of stars, and when she brought her eyes back to Tesla, she wasn’t able to see him. Delphine started walking faster to see if he was behind a tree or anything, and that’s when she heard someone yelling. She ran in the direction of the noise, and found Tesla over a dreadlocked stranger. “Mon dieu. Tesla, ici”, the french commanded the dog, who walked up to her side, then she approached the woman that was on the floor. “Je suis désolé. Are you alright?”, she asked, chewing on her lip worriedly while she helped the woman on her feet, never looking at her face.

One more time that dog had attacked her and there was no one there with him to blame. Where was the goddamn owner? Did they leave their dog alone at night? What kind of owner was that? When the animal started licking Cosima’s face she couldn’t help but laugh for a while, that was before she started to feel pain on her back. “Ok, ok, get off of me, NOW” she ordered, but the golden didn’t seem to care about the petite’s words. It was not until someone called... Tesla? That the dog left her alone. “No, I mean, yes... I’m ok but I fell on a fucking rock.” Cosima stated, looking at the source of her horrible pain in the back. When she looked up, she recognized her ‘saviour’ “Oh, it’s you... Oh my gosh, don’t tell me that is the so-called Tesla you talked me about!” exclaimed the girl with a mix of surprise and a little bit of disgust.

That Saturday night was cold and quiet. Cosima was studying when she decided that was a depressing thing to do on a weekend and felt pity for herself. “Gosh, I’m lame” mumbled the dreadlocked girl and stood up to look for something. And by something she meant a blunt. Once the cigar was between her fingers, she went downstairs to the park and lighted it up easily. One puff, two puffs and... BAM! She fell to the floor. “WHAT THE ACTUALLY FUCK?!” Cosima shouted when she felt a hairy monster on top of her. “Oh, no, not you again...” sighed at the image of that dog. It wasn’t the first time they had an accident like this, but she didn’t know who the owner was to blame it on them.

She nodded, smiling widely to the woman. “I’m sure he is. Maybe I’ll see him again and find out for myself?,” asked the french hopefully, biting her lip intently, she would like to see the brunette again, she had had a good time with her and her kind of bad tempered cat, it had certainly improved her rather dull afternoon. “Oui, that could be,” replied the blonde, shrugging slightly. “De rien. I mean, you’re welcome,” corrected herself Delphine. “Oui, I can very much imagine how worried you were, after all I’m not only a vet but I also have a pet myself, right?,” she commented, smiling at the dread-locked woman’s show of affection to her cat. At the question, she just waved her hands dismissively. “It’s nothing. Your good company and nice sense of humour pretty much made up for it. My treat,” she replied, smiling again at both the girl and the cat.

“He always escapes and wanders up and down the whole building, maybe someday you’ll see him by your floor,” commented joyfully the dark-haired girl after grabbing her coat very carefully, since it was full of vomit. Cosima nodded a couple of times at the other woman’s statement, she was completely right. Then her expression changed, there was no way she was leaving without paying for her attention. “No, I have to pay for your services, vets don’t work for free. We, medical professionals don’t work for free” restated cheerfully before she almost slammed fifty dollars on the desk. “And because of the scratches,” added smirking and then she walked out of the place. “Holy shit, dude, have you seen her?” asked Cosima, so wondered by the beauty of her possible neighbour, while shaking Rambo with amazement.

The tall woman couldn’t help but laugh again. “He clearly doesn’t care, I told you,” said Delphine, smiling cockily to the brunette. She heard to the woman’s story, then laughed again. “Well I don’t know if he’s quite such a poor animal… I mean, I think he kind of has a temper,” mumbled the blonde, tilting her head to the side. “I could totally make him love me though, maybe he attacked me just yet but I’ve been told many times I am a natural charmer,” added Delphine after a moment, smirking playfully at the spectacled woman. At her words, the french shook her head, her curls bouncing with the movement. “Non, ça va. Even if he scratched me,” she said, punctuating her words but looking pointedly at the cat, “I was able to feel his belly just fine. And your suspicion was right. He has parasites so I’m just gonna give him some medication for it, oui?,” she explained. Then she wandered again to the cabinet, and grabbed a syringe and filled it with the medication. She walked again to the gurney and pet the cat for a moment, then put the syringe on his mouth and made him drink half of it. “Now, make him take the rest of it tonight, oui? He should be much better for tomorrow,” she said. Then she put the syringe inside the package she took it from and handed it to her, smiling kindly at her.

The shorter girl didn’t know what the vet did just say, so she just nodded with a smirk, trying to look convinced of what she heard. “He’s a rebel but a good boy, I promise,” Cosima restated “He was scared of the new vet, that was it, and has the temper taht I lack of” added then, petting the soft, white fur that now needed a bath, if that was possible. Could she bath the cat? It sounded like a mortal challenge. “Maybe he got infected by another cat... “ The dread-locked girl frowned again and then took her peet in arms. “Oh, thank you so so so much. You can’t imagine how worried I was about my poor Rambo...” she said while hugging the bad tempered cat, who was still licking the meds out. “How much is it?” asked the girl while walking back to the desk at the entrance of the place.

“Oui? Comment?,” asked Delphine, smirking at the brunette. She nodded at the woman’s words. “Well, yeah, though Tesla is more like a 4-year-old sized hot water bag,” said the french, pulling a face. “But he’s not that big, I still can handle him,” she replied, raising up both her eyebrows as if challenging the dreadlocked woman. Delphine couldn’t stop herself from letting out a loud laugh when she heard her telling her cat off. “You know that cats understand their owners but don’t seem to care about it, right?,” she inquired, a lopsided smile playing on her lips. “Non, mon dieu, you don’t have to leave. Just make him stay there on the gourney while I clean the scratches with some antiseptic and put band-aids on them?,” she asked, then walked towards a cabinet in the far corner of the room. She took antiseptic and band-aids from it, then applied the spray hastily on her hands and stuck one, two, three band-aids on the different cuts. Then she walked back to the gurney. “We’re all set,” she told her companion, smiling kindly to her.

“At least he knows he did something wrong, don’t you?” Cosima looked at the white-y cat again, frowning with disapproval, but he didn’t even look out of the corner of his eye. Obviously he didn’t care. “Ok, Rambo’ll stay here”, she assured while putting a hand on the cat’s back, despite the fact he was quiet and didn’t seem the furry animal would have any intentions to move. “One day this wild ball of fur scratched my ex- gir... my friend’s face. She never wanted to go back to my apartment. It was like a hate-hate relationship. Well, in fact he has a bad reputation with my family, too. Everyone dislikes the poor Rambo... “ The dread-locked girl powted and when Delphine came back, she held the cat firmly by the skin at the back of his neck. “Maybe if I hold him like this he’ll stay quiet” she supposed before staring at the veterinary’s face.

She held firmly the shorter woman’s stare. “Who says that? I clearly am the biggest Nikola Tesla’s fan… After all, I named my dog after him, haven’t I?”, replied Delphine, a perfect brow quirked and an amused smile playing at the corner of her lips, obviously entertained by her companion. “Oui, I understand what you mean. But Tesla is such a cutie… Sometimes I even forget he lives with me… That is until I wake up in the middle of the night because I can barely move my legs because someone thought my bed is much more comfortable than their own little one on the floor… “, she stated, shaking her head at the memory. “N-Non, ça va. I mean, it’s okay. It’s just a scratch”, lied the blonde, stepping back from the gurney while taking off her gloves, examining the scratches, which stung a little bit and were also bleeding. “I thought we were okay with each other, buddy”, she added, now looking at the cat, frowning at him.

“We’ll see who’s the biggest Tesla’s fan...” whispered Cosima before biting her lip to hide the smile on her face. “They are like a living hot water bottle for your feet. Or at least Rambo is... Maybe yours is too big to handle”. Joked the petite while looking at the scene in front of her eyes. She frowned, trying to take a look her the blonde’s hand, but failing at it. “Seriously, I’m SO sorry... You won’t get any tuna this week, Rambo.” Cosima scolded the cat like she was talking to a kid with a firm tone. “Do you want us to go? Or come back in a while? Or never come back? Or maybe I could hold the cat while you examine him...? You tell me, I’ll help you” Talked again after a couple of seconds in silence, she didn’t know what to say besides ‘sorry’.

Delphine did her own squeal of excitement at the picture of her dog. “He’s just the cutest thing there is”, she said softly, love palpable in her voice tone. “Merci, I actually chose that name because of the physicist… I don’t know if you ever heard of him”, she added, tilting her head to the side ever so slightly. Delphine jokingly furrowed her brow at the brunette words. “Excuse me? Are you saying you never saw a person carrying a Great Dane through life?”, inquired the blonde, feigning incredulity. The french woman nodded again at the spectacled girl question.”Oui, I’m serious. Well, I don’t know, but so far I haven’t seen you around neither”, replied Delphine while shrugging, a brow raised high. “Well, isn’t that a warm welcoming?”, she rhetorically asked, laughing gently. “Oh, oui, votre chat…”, said Delphine, mildly surprised at herself for forgetting. She grabbed Rambo again, pressing her slender fingers against his belly, trying to feel any uncommon tenderness, when the cat suddenly hissed at her and clawed at her hands. “Merde!”, she cursed under her breath, snatching her hands away, warily looking at the cat.

Cosima closed her eyes for a couple of seconds and then licked her lips very slowly “I’m the biggest Nikola Tesla’s fan, of course I know who he is” answered proudly the dark-haired girl. “Without him, the world as we know today wouldn’t exist” added then, looking straight into her eyes, a bit of egocentricity showing in her face. Cosima loved when she could talk about some hard-as-shit conversation subject. This wasn’t the case, but she was proud of herself anyway. “I meant that I’ve never seen anyone with a huge dog living in an apartment. That would be… kind of uncomfortable.” She shrugged and then looked how the taller girl examined the cat. “There’s no way I haven’t seen you hanging around or something in the buil… Rambo!” yelled Cosima when the cat attacked Delphine. “Oh my gosh, I’m so so so so sorry! He isn’t used to people and maybe his belly hurt and… can I help you? Oh, shit, I think you’re bleeding” she kind of pouted without knowing what to do.
