man i was accidentally thinkin’ up some real angsty sourintori plot last night it was ridiculous and involved a lot of crying on the part of ai and rin.
Mostly it was in which rin (and sousuke eventually, i always imagine sousuke sticks around for a while more and he and ai bond a lot more in that time.. but he still moves too with the unspoken thought ai would be following after he graduates) moving to australia in/before ai’s third year and then a misunderstanding leading to them not communicating for like a full year and being really angsty about it.
Like Rin’s letters never got sent to Ai properly (idk he mislabeled or just the mail system fucked up, it is international after all) so Rin assumed Ai was Being Like Him and cutting off contact to focus on school or swimming or just existing like idk, something like that makes sense to Rin and his middleschool angst-y actions so he easily accepts this and tries to give Ai his space or whatever. Ai takes Rins lack of communication as a clear sign of We’re Breaking Up and The Distance Isn’t Worth It and is too terrified/devastated to push the issue. Plus he sees like sousuke and rin on instagram or whatever looking like a perfect couple all the time and just accepts they don’t need him or w/e. Sousuke’s kind of stuck in the middle but neither of the other two will have a real conversation about it so he can’t really do anything besides being passively supportive in a way his emotional boyfriends don’t properly appreciate. It doesn’t get resolved until months later Rin gets all his (it’s realistically only probably like 2 or 3) letters back in the mail that never went through and Sousuke plans a surprise trip to go see Ai and work this all out.
