Reflecting on my First Semester
DT508 was a pretty cool course choice. Maybe it wasn't great for everyone as the drop-out rate shows but I love it like morning coffee. All I can think about is remembering looking at this course from sixth-year me's perspective at some weird open day thing for the course a while ago. I'm not quite sure what it was but we made board games and talked about video games and the students showed the games they made. Talking to someone who was involved with the course completely solidified the fact that this was something I wanted to do, something I wanted to do more than anything.
Now it's what- two years from that? I'm here in the same room, but it looks so much smaller than it did back then. I’m at the State of Play, looking at all the content my peers and I have created. I'm in the place I wanted to be. And you know what? It's comfy here. Not the type of comfort where you feel like you're on a cloud and every part of your body is in the right place. It's the kind where your arm is resting under your partner's head and they're asleep but your arm is legit dying and you have to risk either your arm falling off or them waking up. Your arm can go. You have another. Let them sleep.
I genuinely feel so grateful for being in this course. From all the amazing like-minded people whom I can argue and converse with about random things, to the assignments we receive that look so daunting on paper but once I actually start doing them they seem a lot simpler. The lecturers have also been pretty rad too, and I look forward to the new ones that will be gracing our class with their presence. Hopefully next semester will be as refreshing as this one was. I've learned a lot about myself and how I work, but also obviously about the game design process and all the weird things that go along with that. It's been fun, but I'll see y'all next year!
