Butterflies, 2017
The moment I saw this picture of Solange at her wedding, I immediately thought of the late singer, Minnie Riperton. Minnie’s iconic song, “Lovin’ You,” features her beautiful afro filled with baby’s breath, a flower as delicate and romantic as the lyrics of the song. I first found out about Minnie from my mother, who has begged me on multiple occasions to use this song in my wedding (for the record I have absolutely no wedding plans at the moment).
I love seeing these two pictures together. It’s like a time-hop from the early 70’s to present day, seeing as these women are both talented singers and possess a unique style. As Solange reminisces on her wedding date, she posted this photo with the caption “Dreaming of these flowers my sister put in my hair at dinner. One by one they bloomed in my afro, and stayed there until I danced them away.."
