Heat danced around the circular room like tips of invisible strings caressing the Head Boy and Head Girl’s skins. The only sound that broke the silence then was the crackling of the fire and the deep breathing of the redhead sprawled on her stomach atop the couch. On the floor, with his glasses lopsided, his hair in worse disarray than usual, sat James Potter, face illuminated by the orangey glow from the fireplace, hazel eyes swimming with a variation of emotions that ranged from contentment, to sadness, regret, helplessness, and, most importantly, love.
With a heavy sigh, he looked around the room, taking in the stark contrast between the peacefulness that the emptiness and quiet brought, and the chaos represented by the books, parchments and notebooks strewn on the table and floor around them. This , all of it, had become routine for them now. As the whole castle prepared for its slumber, James and Lily, as Head Students, prepared for what was to happen during the waking hours of the next morning. While the students fluffed their pillows, and dove within their blankets, the two buried themselves in their work. And when everyone was well asleep, flying into their dreams and fantasies, escaping the troubles of the world for a few hours, the redhead and the marauder descended to reality, and the wars that raged outside the walls of the castle, would finally catch up to them.
Whenever asked of what they did once alone in the Common Room, their routine answer was composed of excuses about doing homework, arranging Prefect rounds schedule, discussing Student Function events. But unknown to all, it wasn’t always the busyness of their responsibilities that enveloped them when everyone else left. It was honesty, and their fear of the war that was upon them.
They would always talk about what they would do after Hogwarts as they stared at the embers in the grate.
“I want to fight,” James would tell her. “On the frontlines, Lil.”
She would sigh and reply, “That’s dangerous,” but the look on her eyes would back up the honesty when she followed up with, “But I want to as well. It’s the frontlines or not at all.”
They would always share a smile after that, seemingly a smile to show each other support. But in the past, there would always be a lingering question that swam in the flecks of gold in James’ eyes; a question that reflected the glint of fear in Lily’s emerald ones. A question that was only now answered...
But there’s something stopping you, what is it?
The tracks of dried tears on her cheeks held all the answers. Tonight, as she curled up on the couch, she’d finally told him what she was so afraid of, urged by the emotions brought to the surface by the most recent Evening Prophet issue. On the front page, written in block letters was news about a Muggle family murdered by Lord Voldemort’s followers in their latest rampage.
“I want to fight, but I’m scared of what consequences that will have on them,” she’d said, voice shaking, tears streaming from her eyes as she tried so hard to cast away the image of her family’s faces replacing the ones on the newspaper. “If I fight, then they become targets, too. More than they already are.”
“You can tell them to go abroad for a while. I know it’s not much since after Britain, he’d move all over the globe, but for now, overseas is safer,” James had supplied, already hating himself because no matter how much he wanted, he knew he could not give her anything more substantial than that.
“I’ve already tried that.”
“And?”
“And they told me to go with them, said they’ll only leave with me in tow. They didn’t even want me to come back this year, James.”
A lump had lodged itself on James’ throat then. Hogwarts without Lily. It would never be the same, he’d thought. Same as he’d thought that when he found out Dorcas almost didn’t go back as well; and when they thought the danger put on Mary’s life had taken her from them.
“I can see it in their eyes, they hate this world. They don’t resent me but they hate what I’ve become part of. I know, I can just feel it, they regret ever sending me here.”
“Then, maybe you should go with them.” There was sadness in his eyes as he said the words, his voice very low, almost inaudible.
“You know I can’t do that.”
“Why not?” he asked, his eyes still staring at the flame.
Lily’s eyes had flared, then. “Because this world is part of who I am now, you dolt. I belong here, and I can’t just leave it and the people here, leave all of you!” Her voice had risen in volume and the intensity of her words had made James look up.
“But we understand. You’ve got to do what you have to in order to protect your family, Lily,” he’d argued from his spot on the floor, his brows crumpling together in the middle of his forehead and his arm that was slung over a pillow on the couch twitched in reflex, his fist tightening . There was pain in his voice, he didn’t want her to leave, couldn’t even begin to imagine what life would be like without her. But thoughtfulness glinted in his orbs. If she chose to leave mid-year and escape with her family—if that would be the only way to convince them—it would hurt James, but he’d understand just the same.
“Exactly, that’s why I’m staying.”
For a stretch of a moment, James had just stared at her, not seeing the logic in what she’d just said. He’d just sat there at the time, watched as she moved from her spot against the arm of the couch and laid down partly on her side. She’d stolen the pillow under his arm, but after she’d put the cushion under her head, she took his hand in hers, imprisoning it in between her palms.
“I’ve no idea how I’m gonna do it yet, but I’m going to convince them to leave without me,” she’d whispered as her thumb traced circles on his knuckles. “It’s going to hurt, not being with them. But they’ll be safer with no association with me.” Even as she said the words, tears had flowed down her cheeks, already caused by the fact that she would have to deal with leaving her parents and sister someday. “And we, here, will all help protect each other by fighting together.” Through her teary eyes, she’d given him a smile and as she squeezed his hand, she’d said, “That’s what we do for family, right?” With that, she slowly closed her eyes and descended to sleep. By the time her lids completely closed, James’ own eyes were glazed with tears, the droplets clinging to his lashes and staining his glasses.
The Head Boy sat there for some time—the exact amount of which, he could not be sure—watching as Lily’s tears that he could not all wipe dried on her cheeks, but he did not attempt to disentangle his fingers from hers because after everything they’d talked about, that was all he could offer her: his constant presence. He held onto her hand even as he fixed himself a comfortable position that allowed him to lay his head on the couch, next to their clasped hands.
Sleep did not come early for James. He continued to think of ways with which he could possibly help Lily. Thoughts clouded his mind, and by the time his lids grew heavy, he had the makings of a plan that, although still a gamble, was better than nothing. Before sleep could finally take him prisoner, the last thing James remembered doing was draping his free arm over Lily’s waist, his fingertips ghosting the skin that peeked between them hem of her shirt and the waistband of her skirt, and lightly tracing the words, “I love you” on her skin because that, along with his presence, was the only promise he could give her.
Same as she promised to fight for this family she had at Hogwarts, James promised he’d not only be with her through and through but love her for it all. And that love was what he trusted would save them.
In time, as months passed by, they’d stopped climbing up their dormitories after their duties to sleep, and merely found haven in each other’s presence. They found themselves doing this more and more often every week. The couch was charmed to be bigger, to accommodate the two of them, and it was the peace the other provided that lulled them to sleep. And each and every time, before his eyes closed, James gave her the same promise. Every night, his fingertips would skim over her skin, sometimes her arm, her hand, her back, and trace the same three words. “I love you,” his touch said again and again, and each writing did not diminish the meaning of the words, and instead strengthened it, made it truer than the last time he’d done it.
As the weeks passed and this became a new part of James’ routine, he’d expected her to be none the wiser about it. He’d expected her to be well asleep before his fingertips kissed her skin, but he’d found out the truth months after that first night.
James’ mother, the only parents he had left after his father died the year before, had just died then, and the Head Boy, though he’d already grieved with the three boys he treated as his brothers, was still haunted by the sudden emptiness that his mother’s absence had left. It was his turn to lie on the couch then as he stared at the dying embers of the fire in the grate. His hazel orbs reflected the orange flames, but he looked at it distantly, as if instead of seeing the crackling fire, he was watching memories play in his consciousness.
Wordlessly, Lily lay down on the couch, nudging him lightly to make space for her. James was snapped out of his reverie, surprise replacing the distracted look on his eyes. It was far too early that night. Some of the other Gryffindors were still scattered in the Common Room, sprawled on the other armchairs, sitting on chairs, either doing homework or playing around. But Lily did not seem to care. She lay on the couch next to him, her head using his arm as a pillow and her arm wrapping around his waist like it was the most natural thing to do. Then, leaning closer, she planted a kiss on his cheek, inches under his eyes.
“Your eyes are already red, James.” With sad eyes, and a tremble on her lips, she reached up and gently swiped her thumb under the other eye, to wipe away the tears that she had not kissed away, tears that James did not even realize had escaped from his eyes. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered as she let her hand fall to his chest and pressed her forehead against his. And to those who might have heard, it would seem that she was giving her condolences to her grieving boyfriend, but James and Lily knew the true meaning of the words. She was sorry because she could not do anything to appease his grief. She was sorry that she could not bring his mother back. She was sorry because all she could give him was her presence.
“This is more than enough, love. Thank you,” James whispered back as he pulled her closer to him and as he did so, her arm draped back over his waist. “It hurts that she’s gone, but I know she’s in a better place. I can only be glad that you’re here with me, with us. I don’t know what would have become of me and the boys during this if... if you’d come with your family and left.”
A small smile lifted Lily’s lips as she breathed, “Well, I’ve got you to thank for that. With your amazing powers of persuasion, you gained their trust and they believed that though there’s a war here, you’ll help protect me, too.”
“I only said the truth, Lils.”
“I know. And I’m only honest when I say this, too.” She looked at James in the eyes and said with pure honesty, “James, your mother was very proud of you and the man that you’ve become, same as I am. She told me that, and requested of me to make sure you never forget how much she loved you. And I know that these words can’t make her death okay, but maybe someday, it can make life itself bearable.”
“With you, maybe it can.” There was tentativeness in James’ tone, and they both understood that at the moment, there could be no assurance of how life would become with the absence of both of James’ parents. But for now, his promise of trying to live life the way his mother and father would have wanted him to was enough.
In return, Lily found herself uttering her own promise. As she tightened her arm around James’ waist, her hand settling on his lower back, her fingertips dove under his shirt. After receiving a kiss that James planted on her forehead, she ducked her head and moved to lean her forehead against his chest.
“With you, I can do anything,” James whispered with trust and finality in his voice, the words rumbling in his chest and the intensity of which gave Lily goosebumps. The redhead wrote her answer against his skin, her forefinger dancing over his flesh. But after doing so, the Head Boy knew the answer she gave wasn’t a reply to what he’d just said. It was a response to a statement he’d been wordlessly uttering to her for quite some time now.
With her index finger still pressed on the dimple on his back, she muttered the very same words the pad of her fingertips traced on his skin, the other half to James’ vow...
“I love you, too,” she promised back for the first time...

Princess Lilian of the Evans Kingdom had never been a damsel in distress. Though she held the title of princess, she was unlike any of the others. In all her life, she had never let anyone dictate what she had to do or who she had to be. That was until her parents passed away, leaving the fate of the whole kingdom in her and her sister’s hands. With their land in peril, they had to do whatever it would take to secure the safety and prosperity of their subjects; and sadly for Princess Lilian, that meant she had to marry a lord she did not love—a lord that decided that it was a good showmanship of his adoration of her to imprison her in a tower in order to ‘protect’ her. Of course that hell did not last very long. Marriage be damned, the princess decided to escape her tower, and in her escape, she met her guardian—a majestic stag that had been standing as her watcher ever since she got trapped in the tower. Together, the animal and the princess found safety. Though, of course, nothing was ever just a product of coincidence. Unknown to the princess, there was more than met the eye with her loyal companion. The animal was not just a strange, intellectual being that happened to take her under his care. Soon she would find out what their real connection was.
‘Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Princess stuck in a high tower...’ Pretty much the start of every fairy tale, right? But before you go and construct this unrealistic image of a princess you’re used to reading, let me stop you there. There are three things you have to know about this princess.
One, no, she didn’t have long blonde hair she could use to swing down from her prison tower, though she did have beautiful red tresses that, you know, could make a bloke want to run is fingers through it. Not that I was thinking of doing that, of course. No, definitely not.
Two, there was no dragon guarding her that she could not get past. Although, it could be debated that her head ‘guard’ in the tower looked one ugly day shy of looking like one.
Third, and most importantly, the princess didn’t need to be rescued. Why? Because she’s the hero of her own story. Heroines didn’t need to be rescued, after all. But of course, having an amazing—and rather handsome, if I say so myself—partner in crime is always a blessing.
This is the story of Princess Lilian of the Evans Kingdom, and this is how I tried to save her life, which, you guessed it, resulted in her saving my life instead. Pretty brilliant, innit?
Chapter 1 : Partners In Crime
“Lord Severus, are there animals of yours that frolic in the meadow?”
The man sitting on the bed, his head buried in a book, suddenly looked up at the question asked of him. The inquirer, Princess Lilian, sat in front of her vanity, her hand wrapped around her comb as she ran it through her red locks.
“Not that I know of, no. Why, my princess, are there any animals bothering your peaceful stay here?”
Immediately, the princess shook her head, a sweet smile lifting her lips. “Oh, no. Do not worry yourself, my lord. I was merely asking because I wanted to go and visit the clearing, see if there are any animals I can spend time with while there.” The inquiry was innocent enough. Had the princess been in a different situation, the lord would not have found anything worrisome. But as it was, the question created a crease between his dark eyebrows, and caused the bridge of his hooked nose to crinkle.
“Princess Lilian, I want you to enjoy your stay in this tower. Believe me, I do. But you know your situation. As such, I cannot allow you to visit the clearing.”
“My situation, yes.” Lilian gave a tight-lipped smile as she echoed his words. She stood up from her stool and walked towards the lord. “Of course I understand,” she said, the lie passing through her lips easily. Yes, her situation was quite complicated. Because of it, she was trapped inside this tower, not even allowed to let her skin soak in the sun. But still, she failed to see how an hour or two outside could harm her. Initially, she tried to find logic in the situation, but as she spent more and more days inside the tower, she started to feel more like a prisoner than a princess being protected. Well, it was not her fault hunches began forming.
“I am really sorry, milady,” came out of Lord Severus’ mouth, but the look in his eyes suggested otherwise.
“No matter, milord.” Lie after lie rolled down Lilian’s tongue, but she knew that the lord was none the wiser. How could he be when the redhead’s lies were always accompanied by soft squeezes on the lord’s shoulder, a light caress of her fingers through his greasy hair? Lilian had become quite good at lying both with words and actions. So good that she could now fool the Slytherin Lord into thinking she was nothing but a harmless, sweet, clueless princess without even batting an eyelash.
“I am glad you understand,” said Severus as he let his hand fall on hers atop his shoulder. A smile then flitted across his eyes, a smile that was unknowing of the plan brewing in the brilliant mind of the princess. “In that case, I shall go now. I have days of riding ahead of me. I will be back before you even miss me.”
Which will be never, said the princess in her mind, but all she let past her throat was, “I doubt it, for I will be missing you the moment you step out of my door.” The flowery words caused a blush to appear on the male’s cheek. But Lilian herself was not to be fooled as easily as Severus was. Just as the man walked out of her room, she reached out to prevent the door from clicking close, allowing a small space between the hinges for her to hear the orders the lord left to the guards.
“The princess is growing more and more determined to spend time outside as the days passed. Make sure she does not get out.” The tone that the Slytherin held then was so unlike the gentle tone he used when speaking with Lilian. Instead, it suggested that bad things await those who would break his orders. Instead of scaring the woman, however, it only gave her more determination.
Still playing the part of a besotted princess, Lilian approached her wide window and watched as her ‘beloved’ mounted his horse, his grin plastered on his face as he waved to her. She gave him an equally enthusiastic wave, making sure to keep her smile in place. But as soon as the line of trees swallowed his shadow, the smile dropped from her beautiful face. Her fists tightened on her sides, her anger flaring.
How dare he think she was going to be fooled into thinking that henchmen and hunters were really searching for her? If he was so concerned about her safety, then there would have been more than four guards in her tower. Princess Lilian could be described with so many words, but the Slytherin lord was wrong in thinking that stupid or suggestible were two of them. She now knew that the only reason she was still kept in that place was so she could not get away, so as to make sure that one day, she really would take him as her husband. Well, she would not stand by any longer.
As she straightened her dress and took a deep breath, the princess made to turn around, to get ready to put her escape plan into action. But at the corner of her eyes, before she could complete a spin, she caught sight of a silhouette. Just there, behind one of the trees was the real reason why she had asked Severus if there were any animals in the vicinity. Towering and majestic, a huge stag stood in between the trunks of the trees, its head lifted up to her window, the prickling feeling of her skin suggesting that the gaze of the animal was directed straight at her.
“What are you?” she murmured to herself as she stopped midturn, looking back at the animal, waiting for it to walk away. But just like always, it didn’t. It stood there, watching her, as if it was her very own, real, honest guard. Strangely enough, though the animal should have frightened her with its size and the sharpness of its antlers alone, she only felt safe; as though the piercing gaze of the animal could look into her soul, see the torment from within and designated its presence as its attempt to caress her unease and replace it with comfort.
With tentative movements, she lifted a hand and waved at the animal. One, two, three, the seconds stretched and the stag did not do anything to respond to her, and the princess finally chuckled to herself. “My imprisonment in this tower has made me insane,” she said to herself. But, just before she could shake her head and finally walk away from the window, something more peculiar happened. The head of the stag moved, giving her one curt nod before letting his antlered head fall, his front legs folding in a majestic bow.
Instantaneously, Lilian’s lips parted in surprise, but before she could do anything else, the stag had turned and hid behind a wider tree. It did not leave, it still stood guard, but it was made clear that interaction was done for the day. But seeing as that was the first acknowledgment the animal did apart from standing and watching her from afar, the gesture struck confusion within the princess. Now, she knew, before she would run away from this place, she would take this stag with her, and it would be her proper companion. With that vow in mind, the princess finally went to put her plan into action. Tonight, she would be escaping; her and her partner in crime.
