i don’t really believe in the idea that Gen Z is filled with a bunch of “non-yearners” to be honest. i’ve found that Gen Z loves a good tune that ignites feelings of melancholy and nostalgia, music with drawn out synths, distorted/fragmented vocals, moans and groans made by the throat or by way of technology, reverb, and just sooo much texture.
Sometimes i’m online viewing videos with these sonics attached to them & i read the comments and see the abundance of recounted memories of certain feelings felt at a point in one’s life. we are a very melancholic generation & we have a lot to fucking lose. these sounds allow a channel for so many to retrieve feeling, emotion and vulnerability not from the sound but from themselves, from their lives. Gen Z is really just water flowing back home, oscillating between despair and hope because the journey is tumultuous, but these memories that we collectively share, every feeling felt an offering at the altar of the elders (emotions), are reflective of this generation’s deep yearning to return.
