Tent city? Tent arcology? this is a modular tent system called the "Decagon Link Station" by Japanese camping company Logos. Fortunately, you don't need to spend a fortune in a modular extensible tent system to make such a set up. The same concept applies -- you can use the zippers of two tents (that hopefully match, tents within the same brand should usually have same size zippers, but a little hacking with tools should make things compatible) and zip them up! Crafty and handy with tools and such? Make your own tunnel/four way/different modules and interconnects!

In short: zip up two or more commercial tents or create your own tents and build a large interconnected structure!

DIY / Material Listing:

Double sided cigarette case - size by preference (this one used in image)

Silicia gel desiccant packet(s) [varies by case size]

Mini zip bags [1x1" smallest. 1.5x1.5", 2x3"]

Fasteners - tiny neodymium magnets [1/4x1/16"], gaffer's tape, &c.

Be creative. Zip bags with designs & differing colors are sold to help sort, gaffer's tape is sold in different colors while also being quite strong. Neodymium magnets come in different shapes, you could use a long thin bar to keep the bags from moving inside the case. Different case sizes for different needs. Silver plating? -- Did you know that silver acts as a disinfectant (among other things) because of its oligodynamic effect?

The Barrios of Caracas, Venezuela -- a self-sustained slum community of the downtrodden and 'homeless', where some of the poorest people live and crime rates are some of the highest in the world. Police seldom enter the Barrios and the people there are highly self-sufficient. Besides building their shacks and impromptu houses out of sheet metal and other materials, the denizens of the Barrios steal electricity from the power company and at night, the Barrios light up like a very hilly Milky Way, allowing it to be seen for miles around surrounding Venezuela and the nearby proper city of Caracas.

This Band Of Small Robots Could Build Entire Skyscrapers Without Human Help

Even though most buildings are designed using the latest digital tools, actual construction is stuck in the past; building is messy, slow, and inefficient. 3-D printing might change that, but recent projects like these printed houses in China demonstrate one of the technical challenges—the equipment itself has to be gigantic, because it can’t work unless it’s bigger than the building itself.

A team of researchers from Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia are working on another solution: A swarm of tiny robots that could cover the construction site of the future, quickly and cheaply building greener buildings of any size.
