my (brutally realistic) academic advice & habits🖤☕️
as a college student with severe depression and severe adhd
• Hearing fast music - I know all those lofi study streams might be aesthetically pleasing, but I know a lot can make you a little too relaxed, making you sleepy. Look for anything that’s upbeat, something you might want to dance a little bit to as you work. Preferably not with words, especially if you’re reading. It can be jazz, fast lofi, or literally anything that’s both fast yet not distracting.
• Be physically comfortable - Don’t force yourself in an uncomfortable position, please. As someone with adhd, I know brains can and will block out external issues like dehydration, having to use the bathroom, or that damn uncomfortable chair. Listen to your body!!! Take that fat shit you’ve been holding!! Get up and get your water!! Only then will your body stop crying for help and will finally be silent for you to work.
• Pick stationary that’s functional over cute - Don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with a Hello Kitty pen or matcha-colored notebook. But once you’re really locked in, that doesn’t matter as much. Sometimes when I’m so stressed out, those things start to feel like those ‘motivational’ kitten posters in a jail cell—supposedly bringing joy in a shit situation. Choose something that will be on standby like a first responder. For example, I have a Pentel clic eraser. My hand gets so comfortable gripping a pencil that a bulky eraser for one word feels clumsy and often erases more then I want. Obviously, if aesthetically pleasing things make you feel calmer, by all means, go for it. I’m just saying to always prioritize function.
• Being active on breaks - As someone with severe depression, I physically am exhausted 24/7, but once I get rolling after pushing myself down the hill, I feel great. Go for a walk, cook yourself something, listen to music while you’re at it. You’ll feel good, trust me, you won’t regret it.
• Using a planner to actually plan - I personally am veryvery picky with planners, so make sure to find what works for YOU, even if it takes a lot of digging. I use written planners to avoid extra screen time headaches. Schedule what work you plan to do on what day. Write the due date next to it. Color code each class. Find a system that makes sense to you and you only.
• Caffeine is overrated - Now before half the study aesthetic blogs clutch their pearls, please hear me out! My point is that it doesn’t work for everyone! Especially if you have adhd, it makes you calm instead of energized. Find that sweet spot, and you feel locked in. Drink too much, it’s like gorilla tranquilizer. What we REALLY need is more sleep. I know it’s super hard with deadlines and work and school and balancing everything out, so hear me out. Rather then sleeping more, sleep earlier. If you can’t, sleep consistently around the same timeframe. As somebody who understands sleep can feel like a luxury, trust me when I say prioritize sleep over work. I’ve spent nights priotizing work first, and I get absolutely 0 quality work done with 3 hours wasted. Spend those 3 hours sleeping so tomorrow you can really tackle it.
Disclaimer: I know this won’t work for everyone, but this just my honest advice and realistic habits that work for ME. It may not work for you, and that’s okay! Please don’t attack me, I’m just trying my best over here😢
