Absolutely because more people need to get to know The Notarial Cornelius, who is a real and actual character to me.
Behold: the entirety of my The Terror 14th Century Polish Church AU, which I sent to my friend in a frenzy over the span of a few hours, translated and sorted. Her inquiries are in italics.
Cornelius would absolutely be a notary in the 14th century 20s, because it was the period of lack of social trust for the institution of notary public, since bribing examiners was all too common. Cornelius would totally kill and rob someone to bribe the examiner. I think he would be able to learn to read and write, since becoming a notary was probably the only way to dismantle the class barrier (indeed, even in Poland there were some cases of a peasant son becoming a notary). At first he would try to do everything according to rules but it would have been pretty visible that he bribed the examiner, his acts look bad and suck in general. Besides, preparing the documents according to the rules and forms is hard when you don’t really know the rules. He’s a deacon in a church chancery and quickly starts taking bribes to verify non-existent legal affairs for the so-called greater good of the diocese. Gibson is a prester there and he’s like aaaaghh! I’m deadly attached to this mid notary and I believe he will be the archbishop one day and he will appoint me a bishop!
Crozier is the archbishop of Gniezno who has some doubts about the work of this one notary, but they drank mass wine once at the sacristy.
I think that in most universes nothing really happens between Crozier and Cornelius. But in most you get the feeling that something >could< happen. Hickey just isn’t his type. The only thing that turns him on is the thing he lies about, which in canon is Being Irish. Here it is. Uhh. Being a honest notary.
I think they are both peasant sons who successfully climbed the church ladder. Peasant bishops were an actual thing that happened a few times, so why not an archbishop in Crozier’s case? Cornelius just got his job by cheating.
Fitzjames is the bishop of Poznań (and she’s still secretly a girl). Franklin is the papal legate who feels very comfortable at Poznań since he disgraced himself in Rome and everyone knows that, but no one talks about it. I don’t know yet what he could’ve done but Fitzjames is like Woooooah it’s such an honour that the papal legate is our guest (the local monastery’s guest. He would’ve stayed at the monastery.) and Crozier, who hates the Poznań diocese on account of being the archbishop of Gniezno, just knows it's so embarrassing for them.
Jopson and Little. Bishops. That much is known. A lot of rumours regarding Jopson’s career.
Tozer? Tozer is a Knight Hospitaller.

Irving. Well. Another prester. He would’ve absolutely hated Cornelius’ tricks but he doesnt know enough about notarial registers to prove any misdoing. Cornelius, just for fun, writes in the register that Irving is a bastard which is obviously untrue and easy to prove. The entry isn’t really legally binding, unless someone would want to use it in court against Irving. While looking at the register, Irving spots this entry and now he just knows he has solid proof of Cornelius misusing his position. He goes to tell Crozier, but when Crozier comes back to check, the page is gone. Billy has torn and eaten the parchment.
What’s up with Goodsir?
He’s Stanley The Medic’s assistant in the monastery Franklin stays at. Stanley hates him, since in his free time he translates Avicenna from arabic to polish. Which makes no sense, since: 1. there are latin translations 2. bro why do you even need a polish translation. He thinks he’s going to find out something new that way. + He tells everyone that Saladin was awesome.
Bridgens is absolutely the librarian.
What’s up with Peglar. I think his imperfect writing is awesome.
A failscribe, which gives him a reason to spend his free time in the library. Chastily, obviously. Ink: spilled; parchment: torn and mended. But the way he mends the parchment is truly impressive.
Slightly heretic abbot Hodgson. As Crozier’s lackey he should’ve been in Gniezno, but I think he’s classy enough for the abbot’s position. He has family from Rus territories and was in an orthodox church once. He reads a lot of Greek authors to write polemical works, but is secretly turned on by the whole ceremony. He once omitted filioque in the Creed and feels guilty to this day. I think he would be a good abbot who gets a bit demented at the end of his life.
