DRDT’s Unfired Chekov’s Guns: A (Semi-) Comprehensive List —Part 1

Note: When I say “Chekov’s guns,” I’m not talking about obviously unsolved mysteries or clear foreshadowing. I’m talking about minor details, most of them seemingly innocuous, that may become relevant in the future.

If a gun is onstage, it must be fired. If Charles spends a scene explaining the difference between CDs and DVDs, it will prove his innocence later. If Ace takes a resistance band and it gets mentioned twice, it will become the final nail in his coffin.

So with that out of the way, here’s all the potential Chekov’s guns I could find, in chronological order.

“Forever Dead”

Veronika tells Teruko about this novel during the prologue, and many people have suspected it to foreshadow the truth of the killing game. (…one in, and I’ve already broken my “no foreshadowing” rule. Goddammit.)

The Killing Game Rules

People have rightfully zoned in on number 14’s suspicious phrasing. Number 9 also hasn’t come up yet.

Whit’s Intuition (Intuiwhition)

Gets mentioned a second time in the class trial. One could have been foreshadowing (goddammit!) the other, but it might come up again.

Teruko is Left-Handed

It’s hard to imagine how this would come up, and it’s probably just a fun character detail since left-handedness was a considered a sign of misfortune. But I’m putting it down anyway since the script goes out of its way to mention it.

Custom Weapons

Teruko’s, Xander’s, Rose’s, Min’s, Arei’s, and Hu’s have all been used in a murder (or attempted murder). Charles’s (see further above), Veronika’s, and J’s have made appearances for non-murder reasons. David’s, Whit’s, Arturo’s, Levi’s, Eden’s, Ace’s, and Nico’s have not come up at all yet.

Murder in the Calais Coach/Orient Express was written by Agatha Christie, and famously ends with the twist that (spoiler) everyone dunnit. Hm.

Whit is a Light Sleeper

This to me is the most obvious one, and the one that led me to making this collection in the first place.

Teruko is a Hoarder and a Glutton (Affectionate)

Probably exists for the purpose of making Ace’s resistance band yoinking stand out less. Also, MonoTV restocks the fridge daily, so this wouldn’t come up in a murder. Also, they’re granola bars, so this wouldn’t come up in a murder. But it’s mentioned twice, so I put it here anyway.

With Chapter 3 on the horizon, I’ve seen people theorizing about possible victims, and it inspired me to do some theorizing of my own. More specifically, I’ve been thinking about which characters seem capable of being the blackened — so I’m going to go person by person and discuss the likelihood of them committing murder.

Teruko: Very low chance. Being the protagonist aside, as we already know she has no desire to leave the killing game grounds. I can see her perhaps sacrificing herself in order to kill the mastermind by Chapter 6, if that’s the direction her character arc goes in, but the odds of her being a standard blackened are basically zero.

Eden: Low chance. It seems wildly out of character for her. It’s possible we’d get some reveal that she’s not as innocent as she appears, except we’ve already gotten that reveal re: The Fork. So I don’t think she’ll end up a blackened unless it’s a heartbreaking sacrifice in the same vein as Gonta or Chiaki.

Charles: Very low chance, mostly because nearly every method of murder is impossible for him. Theoretically he could kill someone remotely, either with poison or some mechanism. It seems out of character for him regardless, but maybe some motive could drive him to doing so.

David: Moderate chance. Everything about his character thus far screams that he could and would, but from a meta standpoint it seems much too predictable as of now. He could perhaps become a Chapter 5 killer if he follows the footsteps of Nagito and Kokichi (although I suspect him to be a decoy antag) but I think there’s basically zero chance of him killing anyone right now.

Arturo: Moderate chance. He seems among the more capable of murder, being prone to physical violence when emotionally triggered, and he has a great disdain for almost everyone in the cast. However, from a meta standpoint his character arc seems like it’s going to be about saving people rather than killing them.

Levi: Moderate chance. He is the most capable without a doubt, for obvious reasons. But like David, it seems much too obvious, and like Arturo, his character seems headed in the opposite direction. Basically a 10 if you evaluate him as a person and a 0 if you evaluate him as a character.

Hu: High chance. We haven’t really gotten to see what she might be capable of, but we have gotten to see her motherly persona crack immensely. I don’t think she has much reason to kill anyone as of now, but could see her potentially doing so in response to a motive. I’ve rated her as “high” mostly because I need to put *someone* in that category.

Nico: Low chance. Obviously capable of murder, but with Ace gone there aren’t that many people I can see them wanting dead. Only possibilities right now are David or Hu, maybe. Narratively, I don’t see them killing anyone, and I feel pretty confident about that. But what do I know, I felt the same way about a certain jockey and look where we are now.

J: Very low chance. She has been shown time and again to be adamantly against murder, with more conviction than anyone else in the cast. I can only see her becoming a blackened for two reasons: either to force her into a moral crisis, which is possible but for some reason I feel it’s unlikely, or if she becomes so filled with resentment for everyone in the cast that she decides they all need to die (like Aoi or Nagito, but she seems much stronger mentally than either of those examples).

Veronika: Moderate chance. Her character is very capable of it mentally, and her motive is obvious: “for the fun of it.” Except… I don’t think it’s that obvious at all, for two reasons. 1) it’s much too predictable, and 2) whether she gets away with it or not, it would mean the end of the killing game for her, and that isn’t very fun at all. If she does become a blackened, it’ll need to be for some other reason that hasn’t shown itself yet.

Rose: Low chance. As people have mentioned, her mental state is rapidly deteriorating, so it’s not impossible that she’ll crack and do something drastic. But I think it’s effectively impossible that she’ll kill someone with the intent of surviving the trial, because she’d be haunted by that memory for the rest of her life.

Whit: Genuinely no idea. This man’s character confounds me. There is clearly SO much we haven’t learned about him. Fighting for my life trying to get a read on this guy.

This post ended up having a lot more meta reasoning than I was hoping, but oh well. These are my thoughts, please enter speculative combat with me if you found these theories interesting/egregious.
