the sun setting over the bay warmed your house with an orange glow. the bay glittered as the waves ebbed and flowed as neighboring boats began to dock for the night. somewhere far away a seagull cawed before taking off for home.
you were at the bottom of a long line of worn, stone steps, watering a bush of blooming hydrangeas. the blue and purple hues practically gleamed in the july sun. you chuckled a bit as a bumblebee accidentally flew into the soft spray of water, taking refuge under a leaf before flying away again.
the sound of the sliding glass door, and shark’s collar jingling caught your attention. the door closed again behind the happy pitty, as he bounded the steps towards your pool. he trotted around the edge, sniffing carefully, before jumping in. you sighed with a soft smile, watching as he ran back out and jumped back in again.
the watering can spat out the last of your water, dribbling over the soft cool toned petals. you set it back down by your gardening cabinet outside, and cleaned up the hose as well.
the waves lapping against the boat dock provided the tranquil soundtrack you needed today. taking a deep breath in, your shoulders dropped down and your muscles relaxed. you floated back down the steps and found a spot against your patios railing, watching the water collide with the cool cement.
“hey,” billie whispered, startling you a little. you were so relaxed you hadn’t even heard the door opening and closing again. her hands rested on your hips and snuck around, wrapping herself around your waist.
“hi,” you replied as you rested your hands on top of hers, letting your head fall back onto her shoulder slightly.
you breathed in deep again, inhaling her; your billie. woodsy, and sweet like vanilla, and just a touch of salt from your dip in the ocean earlier today.
billie didn’t say anything else. she just swayed your bodies side to side a bit, almost as if she was a wave herself; rocking you slightly, and making you a little sleepy.
she left kisses to your sun-warmed shoulder, smelling the sweetness of your coconut lotion.
the sky had now turned navy, matching the soft fibers of the sweater resting over your shoulders. somewhere in the distance, someone shot off some fireworks only audible to those really listening. the stars littered the sky with the same sparkle the moon was providing to the ocean now.
her hands softly ran up and down your sides, feeling the fabric of your top, feeling the warmth of your skin. she nuzzled her nose into your neck and stayed there. hydrangea and coconut filled her senses and she smiled.
“i could stay like this forever.” you finally broke the silence. turning your head slightly to look at her.
“yeah?” billie asked, sweetly with a hint of cheek. her dimple deepened as she smiled.
“mmhmm,” you nodded. you raised a hand to her cheek, keeping her face close to yours.
she leaned in ever so slightly, closing the gap between your lips. you could feel her smile and chuckle a little into the kiss.
“EWWWWWW!!!!” a little voice shrieked.
“MAMA IS KISSING MOMMY!!!!” another one joined in.
you both turned, still snuggled together by your waist. your little girls were watching from across the patio, in teasing disgust. you couldn’t help but smile at the sight of their little scrunched up faces, and lopsided curly pigtails worn from a day of endless playing.
“um excuse me,” billie started with a stern yet teasing lilt to her voice. “mommy happens to be my wife, so i get to kiss her whenever i want!” she sealed her point with a noisy kiss to your cheek.
the girls squealed again, but smiled.
“but what about cooties?!” georgia, your youngest asked.
“you don’t catch cooties when you love each other,” you explained softly, holding out your free hand for her to tot over.
“she’s lying georgie!!!” charlotte, your oldest, playfully warned as georgia got closer.
before georgia could run away, billie scooped her up in her arms, peppering noisy kisses wherever she could reach on your daughters chubby cheeks.
“NOOOOO!!!!” charlotte squealed as you raised your eyebrows at her, slowly stalking your way to kiss attack her as well.
without any trouble, you caught charlie, tickling her through the kisses.
their giggles rang out across the yard and patio; the best sound in the entire world.
“well,” billie playfully sighed. “i guess we all have cooties now!”
“that’s okay mama,” georgie started, as she settled in billie’s lap on the ground. “i love you so they’re not real cooties.”
billie scooped her up in a hug, kissing her cheek.
“mommy, can we make s’more’s tonight?!” charlie asked, suddenly struck with the zoomies.
“mwah!!” you kissed her cheek first. “yes baby, we can. why don’t you and georgie get the stuff from the kitchen and mama and i will get the fire pit started, yeah?”
you couldn’t even finish before both girls darted back inside at the promise of sugar. you chuckled as shark bolted after them.
“c’mere mommy!” billie teased from her spot on the outdoor couch. her face was glowing as the embers from the fire sparked to life.
you snorted and got up, making your way over to her. you flopped into her side, letting her rest an arm around your waist.
without any words, she kissed you again just like that. all snuggled up into her side, one of your hands cradling her cheek, her arm holding you tighter against her. as you pulled away you could f help but just smile at each other.
“i love you,” billie stated plainly.
“oh thank god,” you teased. “i was worried about cooties.” she playfully swatted your butt, scoffing yet smiling.
the girls came out from behind the couch, arms full of cracker boxes and chocolate bars and the biggest marshmallows you’d ever seen; billie’s grocery-shopping-doing you were sure of it.
immediately, charlie was stabbing a marshmallow and sticking it into the flame. billie lunged forward, teaching her the best technique.
meanwhile, georgie heaved her little self onto the couch, and flopped into your side. she held out her marshmallow, silently asking for help.
as you picked out the best mallow for her, her eyes went wide and curious.
“mommy?” she asked.
“yes baby?” you scooted her onto your lap so she could reach the flames.
“did mommy kiss you like a princess?”
you chuckled a little. georgie was the more whimsical of the two, always loving a bedtime story and snuggling in your laps while charlie ran circles around shark and cannon balled into the pool daily.
“yeah baby, she did.” you replied.
“is that why you don’t get the cooties?” she began to giggle herself.
“yeah baby, that’s exactly why,” you chuckled, kissing the top of her head.
charlie walked over, s’more in hand, and jumped up next to you guys. billie sat on the other side of her, resting an arm behind you on the couch.
in comfortable silence, the girls munched on their sugary treats, politely asking for help to make another one. you and billie just sat back and watched.
watched the life you two had built and dreamed about.
eventually the little gremlins moved to the yard, throwing the ball around for their beloved pit bull. you curled into billie’s side, fully letting her snuggle you as the breeze came in off the water.
you chuckled for a second.
“georgie asked me earlier if you kiss me like a princess, and if that’s why i don’t have cooties.”
billie chuckled as well, smiling fondly as she pictured her wide eyed baby girl asking you that.
“well do i?” she started. “kiss you like a princess?” she wiggled her brows to make you laugh.
“every kiss for the last ten years, yeah.”
with that, she cradled your face once more to kiss you. with the sound of the ocean crashing and your daughters giggles, as your playlist.
“i could stay like this forever,” you repeated from earlier that night.
