someday i'll write a real bio for her for real, i didnt realize i didnt even have the in universe satan info on there smh? well. heres some rambly info for now.

melanie is always like Oh yeah my dads pretty kick ass, you know, torturing the damned and all that. real dark sadistic shit, he'll fuck you up, punk. but she's actually never met him. satan is actually just constantly hating his job, he's not into it at all. he's so bored. it was fun thousands of years ago but he's over it and he has a permanent migraine from all of the screaming. his real passion is barbecuing and he just goes by stan. he gets sad when damned souls dont wanna try his barbecue. its not a trick guys, its not human meat or your own entrails or anything, its ethically sourced.

the grim reaper is his husband and he scares the shit out of people who find his farm in idaho because he'll be there with his scythe looking like he's about to kill you but he's just cutting his corn and wheat. he tried just moving in with stan but crops don't grow right down there. they come out deformed and they all bleed for some reason. sometimes they scream, too. so idaho it is.

also realizing there's 0 context anywhere about why i always give her a knife. anyway it's for chopping things up for stews. thats like 80% of her diet. it's really easy to make stew when you can make fire from nothing, all she needs is a big pot and water and whatever veggies/meats she can get her hands on. ez.

fluorescent  lights  buzz  faintly  overhead,  casting  the  convenience  store  (  open  twenty  four  hours  —  very  convenient  )  in  an  unnaturally  sterile  glow.  ruairi  blinks  blearily,  fingers  curled  around  a  plastic  slushie  cup.  a  tragically  empty  slushie  cup.  old  reliable,  also  known  as  the  blue  flavor,  sports  a  glaring  red  OUT  OF  ORDER  sign.  he  shoots  the  cashier  a  questioning  look,  arching  a  brow  with  scathing  calcabrina-patented  judgement  —  though  the  dead-eyed  look  he  receives  in  return  is  more  soulless  than  a  blank.  okay.  fine.  no  blue  slushie,  then.  ruairi  calcabrina  is  a  big  boy  and  he  isn't  going  to  let  it  ruin  his  night.  (  it  is  SO  ruining  his  night.  )

magenta  gaze  flicks  back  to  the  slushie  machine.  the  demon  squints.  blurple  splash?  pinenanna?  cosmic  crunch  —  WHY  are  they  incorporating  texture  into  this?  also,  ew?  ew.  he  just  wanted  a  hideously  artificially  flavored  drink.  for  morale.  he  doesn't  need  to  solve  these  stupid  riddles  three  only  to  find  out  the  flavor  is  ash  tray  and  cough  syrup.  ❝  which  one  of  these  is  the  least  shit?  ❞  ruairi  suddenly  asks  —  glancing  at  the  only  other  person  weird  enough  to  loiter  around  this  particular  convenience  store  at  two  in  the  morning.  ❝  or  tastefully  atrocious.  ❞

Two in the morning was the best time to loiter around convenience stores. As much as she loved to eavesdrop on the inconsequential conversations of the humans around her- (Imagine being all bent out of shape just because you dropped a few pennies down the gutter. It was refreshingly quaint after listening to the humans back Home whine about being disemboweled over and over and over again) -it was a bit harder for her accrued army of vermin to wander as freely as they'd like to. She would be met with annoyed little squeaks as she shoved as many of them as she could into her hoodie pocket to protect them from the horror of being carelessly stepped as so many of the others had, but it was for their own good lest they end up like Rattison, squished flat as a pancake with that lady's footprint on her back. And y'know, dead, but there were worse things you could be than dead and being squished flat as a pancake was probably one of them. That sounded pretty rough.

Other than all the chatter, the only benefit a crowd gave her was how easy it was to get in and out with as many candy and granola bars as possible without being spotted, and she found that it was just as easy when whatever poor minimum wage earning schmuck tasked with manning the station was at the counter either half asleep or playing some time wasting app game on their phone. Tonight, Melanie had practically looked the clerk dead in the eyes as she'd taken an entire display of snickers off of the shelves and sat down on the floor with them. They didn't even move a muscle when she tore off a wrapper as purposefully loud as she could. Nice. She was totally coming back here again tomorrow night. Morning. Whatever.

She had a still wrapped candy bar shoved halfway down her through when the guy having having a staring contest with the slushie machine suddenly asked for her opinion. Oh good, she'd been worried for a second that he was going to say something about the stolen snickers. Phew. Melanie swallowed the bar with an almost cartoonish 'gulp' and stood back up, leaving the display box on the floor as three or four rats spilled out of her pocket to get their treats.

"Oh shit, they got blurple?" She gasped as she looked over the available flavours, quickly scurrying to grab herself a cup. "It's so bad. You know how that one Gatorade just tastes blue? Blurple splash is like is like if blue and rusty nails had a baby, but without the tetanus."
