Keeping with the halloween theme we’ve got going is today’s video “Worlock” by Skinny Puppy.

This video has an interesting story. Ostensibly the concept was that the guys from Skinny Puppy edited this video out of footage from various horror movies, with the aesthetic being that it mostly used footage that was cut for release in the US in order to get R ratings.

That’s quite a concept and I don’t know if that’s really what happened or if it’s just the narrative that grew up around it. Anyway, this video was definitely something that MTV would never touch, due to the iffy copyrights and the at least hard R rated subject matter, so the video spread in those pre-internet days via tape trading, similar to Nine Inch Nails’ Broken video.

This lead to the video having a kind a copy of a copy of copy lo-fi snuff film look. That is until some guy on the internet tracked down DVD copies of most of the movies and remade the video as a high quality version.

For those curious, the movies used include: Profondo Rosso (Deep Red), Eraserhead, Suspiria, Tenebrae, Combat Shock, Dune, Phenomena, Opera, The Beyond, Hellraiser II, Bad Taste, Dead & Buried, Luther The Geek, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, From Beyond, Parents, Death Warmed Up, Intruder and Altered States.
