The Handmaid’s Tale, the novel itself is terrifying enough, but with the Hulu series released two years ago they managed to create an even more terrifying reality. It’s an important series, in that it takes these real world issues that we’re discussing today and puts ‘normal’ Americans into these dire situations. I would say it is especially important for white Americans to watch the series.

The victims and perpetrators in the series are mostly white, despite several characters who also play vital roles such as Samira Wiley, who is the main character’s best friend and O.T. Fagbenle who is the main character’s husband. My point in this is that, it’s terrifying and I think it allows white American’s to put themselves into these vulnerable situations that refugees are in, that black American’s are in, or in the positions of generally oppressed people be it here in America or some far away country that we can very easily disassociate from. The topics range from female genital mutilation, domestic violence, forced labor, rape, classism, elitism, struggles of migration, environmental degradation, extremism, child-separation/disappearances and a government ruled by harmful ideologies.

The TV series manages to depict a huge 'what-if' situation of America, 'what if' our government can’t protect us, 'what-if' the wrong people come into power, 'what-if' these wrong people have a lot of money and power, 'what-if' these people extend the injustices faced by so many already to the greater population of America, and 'what-if' this happens and it’s too late to do anything about it? I believe that the series is about so much more than women’s oppression and so many other themes can be taken out of it, and can shed light on so many important issues. It can open the eyes of the ignorant, maybe even invoke some empathy.

I’ve spent a good portion of my life creating my life around boys. First when I realised I was different from them trying everything I could to get their attention, then trying to be one of the guys myself by isolating myself and participating in heavy drinking, and finally I tried to completely avoid them and hide behind a boyfriend to keep me safe from them. I have grown my hobbies and interests around the boys who I wanted to be with, I have been belittled for things that I like, have been made to feel that their interests and their hobbies are above mine. My feelings, my pleasure and my interests were to come secondary to theirs. I have been treated as a means to an end, an object, and things have been taken from me without my permission. Despite it all, I’m not upset, because the problem is bigger than them, it’s bigger than me, and it’s bigger than all of us. Society has created these norms with expectations for the both of us, and until we can destroy those norms and coexist with respect for one another than it won’t get better. So let’s not love one another because of gender, or expect things from one another because of a system that doesn’t allow us to be equal. Let’s love each other because we are humans, because we all have a common interest in living and making the best of our short time here.
